Am a Jamaican, It's beans but the reason why we said peas is because originally we used the Gungo peas with the rice. Then we started using the red beans but, the name rice and peas was already established so we just continue to use the name rice and peas

The peas are smaller in Jamaica and the ones that we call beans in Jamaica is much bigger and broader like ‘broad beans/ or butter bean’ that we mostly use with our oxtail.

It's called rice and oeas to make life simpler in my opinion . Jamaicans use , Black beans, cow peas, Gungo peas , lentils just about any types of beans and peas. So calling it rice n' peas makes life easier 😊❤🇯🇲
