Eating Kerala Cuisine on a Backwaters Cruise 🇮🇳

For my last day in Kerala I went on a day cruise through the Kerala backwaters. Organised group tours are not something I usually do as I much prefer to go explore on my own and have authentic experiences but I was still feeling quite weak after being ill for more than a week, so a relaxing cruise with a set itinerary seemed like a good idea.
I was picked up in the city of Kochi and taken to what looked like an ordinary house along the canal in the suburbs of the city. Parked up were three wooden canal boats and unfortunately our whole group were shoved into only one of them. It was full, or rather over-full as there wasn't even room to move my legs. Bad memories of flying on budget airlines came right back to me.
The Kerala backwaters are a network of canals where the water is "brackish", meaning it's a mixture of fresh and salt water, caused by the tide going out and coming back.
The boat that we were riding didn't have any engine. It was powered only by two strong men who pushed it down the canals using sticks. This meant that when nobody was talking we had complete silence. Unfortunately it was hard to fully enjoy the serenity and feel relaxed because of the seating situation.
It was quite an awkward situation for me to try to make a vlog as I was packed in so tightly with strangers and it would have been rude to be talking loudly all the time. I just whispered a few times into my lav microphone as we slowly made our way through the backwaters.
We had two stops during the cruise. One was to a garden where they were growing coconuts and other produce. The guide was very knowledgeable and I definitely learned some stuff, including how the locals make their "toddy" drink from fermented juice from coconut buds.
The second stop was for lunch where we enjoyed a banana leaf thali of Kerala cuisine. It was fully vegetarian but still I managed to enjoy it. Some unexpected entertainment throughout the meal came from a clown. No, not a clown that they brought in for us like it was a kid's birthday party, but one of the Americans on the tour is an actual clown and specialises in balloon tricks.
The joys of traveling. You never know who you will meet.
All in all the tour was pretty decent but there's definitely more comfortable ways to enjoy the Kerala backwaters, including staying in a houseboat. This day tour was fairly cheap but I made a mistake booking it through Airbnb Experiences. The other guests all booked it through their hotels and paid just 1,200 rupees each, which is about half as much as I did.

Dale, Annie and I were glad to meet you on that trip and we've enjoyed watching quite a number of your older blogs since then (we've subscribed). What a surprise to tune in and see this video today on your channel. It brought back some fun memories (we still haven't looked at the photos and videos we shot during our 3-4 months in India but we watched this 1/2 hr. video). We hope to run into you again and look forward to seeing more of your postings. All the best!

@@Dale_Philip - Reading your page here is like reading a book... you have so many followers, we're really impressed! We're happy we got to share this adventure with you. I had brought along about 25 pounds of balloons with me... mostly to play with kids on the streets as Annie explored her "shopping chakra" (she's got that developed like the artist she is). When I'd get bored (like on that back river boat trip), the balloons would often find their way out of my bag. I tried not to interfere with the "authentic cultural experience" everyone was there for, but sometimes my natural instinct took over. I got sick eating fish from venders by the Chinese Fish nets in Cochi... then we took off for Munnar for a few days. We returned to Chochi for a 2-week a detox ayurveda retreat (after we ate that fish I felt I was already cleansed of everything). Then we went south and had a better backwater adventure. We ended our time with about two months in Goa. We had hoped to see cave temples before returning to the States, but when everything closed down in March we were "Prisoners in Paradise." They closed all the shops, restaurants, grocery stores... we weren't afraid of catching the virus since there weren't any cases in our area but we were never sure we could find food. That led to some fun adventures sneaking around town to find anyone who would sell us food and snacks and sneaking into the ocean for swimming every day (since we had about the distance of a football field between us and the nearest other people we figured we had plenty of social distance for safety). We booked three flights to get back home and they were all cancelled. Finally the US Embassy arranged for a bus to Mumbai and a flight back to the US (we haven't gotten the bill yet, but it will be coming) and we joined about 300 other Americans to Atlanta, Georgia where Annie and I rented a car and drove about 12-hrs non-stop back home. We've been feeling pretty isolated here ever since.... This page of yours is giving us some good smiles. Wishing you the best.

In my humble opinion, this guy’s videos have to be used as a reminder to the department of tourism/ other tour operators who are so naive (apparently) to think that Western tourists would just love to sit on a stuffed boat full of tourists and ‘enjoy’ a backwater cruise, as if they wouldn’t find backwaters anywhere else! In India people seem to categorise tourists into two - budget backpackers, or ‘rich’ tourists. They don’t seem to realise that most tourists lie in between these two categories. Oh and tour guides like the one here should be just, sitting at home I guess.

@@jayrashtrahindavi2089 That's a bit dramatic. Kerala is fantastic, the food is terrific and the people absolutely charming colourful and welcoming. We self-drove around Kerala and stayed in some dreamy places. We also did lots of walking in areas around our hotels, found fantastic beaches, fascinating culture including incredible theatre. I would absolutely go to Kerala. Just avoid the tourist pitfalls like this trip seen here. For one week we stayed in a lovely beach cottage right on the beach, had our own cook and cleaner. We ate fresh fish caught same morning for lunch from a small fishing boat and net, delicious fruits. Our chef would ask us what we would like for the day offering suggestions. All our food served to our dinning table on our own cool breezy veranda. I have incredible memories bird watching and fish spotting, some beautiful fish live in the water ways and coastal pools....... anyway you get the idea. A trip on the backwaters is just one of the things to do, it doesn't make or break a stay in Kerala but if you are careful it will definitely enhance. While it is dreamily relaxing for a few days drfiting on the backwaters in a house boat it's also not absolutely essential..A backwater "tour" is certainly not a must do either.

Great idea. Share the happiness. If you have some basic video editing skills you can add some narration at the beginning of the video telling the story of the situation, then leading into the performance, or voiceover parts of the performance. I feel that you were SCAMMED by the Alleppey Backwaters Cruise operator. The boat ride was super slow and you weren't taken to some of the exotic places of Alleppey
@silverscreame
@silverscreame 3 жыл бұрын
3 things...location,package and guide...cruise is provided at different points in alapuzha...the hotel in which you stay may offer this service,or even some farms you visit..all of them does cruise but covers different location 🤷..or in some lucky and rare cases..the locals you meet might offer good ones with awesome view that even the most costly cruise package won't provide...that's why pre-booking stuff without a research is as good as shit..if one shows the attitude of just came for the sake of it..that is what you can expect in return..money is not the issue..you need to go out meet people...and tell them what you expect to experiance...ask any local kid or teenager you find on road..the best guides..
