A little bit of history: In 1926, the Hollandsche Eenheidsprijzen Maatschappij Amsterdam, or HEMA, opened its first branch. HEMA was the first department store for the 'common man'. This was modelled on the successful Woolworth stores in America. The difference with other department stores was that HEMA only sold products for unit prices: 10, 25 and 50 cents. In addition, there was only one version of each type of article available. The underlying idea was: the best quality for the lowest price.

When I lived in the UK and regularly went back to NL I would buy Engelse drop on both sides and carry both ways for ironic purposes. (since back then HEMA had a presence in the UK. Fun fact it was a also a major destination in London for the Dutchies to stock up on Dutch snacks)

I just snacked on my 3 day old lentil stew with bacon. Prepared in a slow cooker and kept on 'keep warm' as an experiment. I might go for an erwtensoep experiment soon.

it's getting colder so we had stampot boerenkool too this week, i like to add spekjes ( bacon bits) and blokjes augurk (pickle cubes) alongside the rookworst. baking the leftovers the next day is just as delicious.

As a kid as we went shopping with oma, we always ended at Hema or the V&D (bankrupt) cafetaria. The hotdogsauce is probably similar to "broodje unox" sauce from Calvé you can get in the supermarket. It is my go to mustardy sauce. Hema Rookworst is still smoked on wood, like the tradition should be. The factory was in Oss (born, raised and left that city, you can do without). but I heard Hema is getting to an other supplier after 80 years been produced under private label in the Unox factory.

crock monsigeur is the belgian name for what the dutch call tosti, or in english grilled cheese sandwich. crock monsigneur is chees and ham crock madam is the same without the ham. but hema goes with the begian name becouse it sounds fancier

If you take the bottom part of the tompouce off and put it on the top and than flip the hole tompouce you have a clean bottom instead of the frosting on the bottom. So same principle the same but a litte bit cleaner ;)

One tip I don’t know if you guy’s know already but “stampot” mashed up with spinach have the darker colour that you talk about, mashed up with kale “boerenkool” isn’t as dark as spinach. 😉

The HEMA tompouces are so nice. In my town of Maassluis ta bakery supposedly has the best tompouces of the country; they queue for them every King's Day from like 3 in the morning. But they are so ridiculously sweet. I'd rather have the subtle HEMA sweetness.

I would put the cale in first and then the potatoes on top. That is easier to fit in a pan and you can put in a lot less water to cook your stamppot.

The smoky flavour of the HEMA rookworst is authentic - it's the only rookworst that's still smoked for real. Other brands just boil these sausages and add som artificial smoke flavour to it.

Big shout out to you for making such professional and entertaining content. I enjoyed every one of them and still see the videos improving over time, while they were already good from the start. I also like the addition of the podcast. Now it’s time to make some videos about the cat. I think it would have been great to have included video from the cat’s perspective for which they sell cameras. I don’t know if you’re familiar with them but I love that. Keep up the great work. PS: I hope you are able to keep this going. I follow six channels of USA to the Netherlands migrants, but two stopped posting, one of them slowed down significantly and only three remain. Those three channels are totally different in views, origin, way of life, and presentation and I can say, while I’m on the road, which is about 45 weeks a year, I need to see them. I love those positive energy!

The reason why some boerenkoolstamppot is darker green is because of the frozen boerenkool (freezer section supermarket) that is very finely chopped. I like to use that, also because it has a slightly sweeter taste to it. I eat it vegetarian. You two are real meatlovers, but perhaps you want to try: make the mash and put fresh roughly chopped tomato through it, heap of cream cheese and sprinkle 'extra belegen' kaas over it or what ever cheese you like. Some black pepper et voila... I put mashed white beans in it for proteine, but with al your proteine intake you can easily leave that out... Your cat is really into Hema as well... A dog would have liked the sausage...your cat goes for the pepernoten 😂...very funny to watch...

The HEMA hotdog also comes in a sort of 'make them at home kit'. Vacuum packed sauce, buns and saucages that you can heat and assemble at home. (Michelle playing with and eating the hotdog should perhaps come with an '18+' warning...?😉😄)

The omelet, what you called egg pad, is mostly eaten on a cold sandwich or between 2 cold sandwiches. I make them in the morning, prepare my sandwich and take the sandwich with the omelet to my workplace for lunch. Or when going on holiday by car prepare the sandwiches and take it with us so we don't have to stop at a gas station when we need a break, we also have a thermos flask with tea or coffee with us.

Hihi, when I was a young guy, schooler. I worded at Thursday evening and the Saturdays many decades ago in The Huage. at HEMA pastery and food dept. So good and cazy house to sell all the good stuff. Haha it was not a matter how to sell it, it was a matter how fast! 😝 Pls go back around December and try the Amandel staaf! Before you eat it warm it up a little! You will love it. Sold it fresh and warm from the HEMA bakery upstairs, imagine the smell in the cold air outside of the shop! Sold out in 3 hours, hihi enjoy. Good memories!

My Dad took me to the town center near the railroad station when we lived in Den Helder. Across from there was the Hema and we always did the same thing on Saturdays: 1. Get a Rookworst at the Hema 2. Get a Sausijze broodje van de Hema 3. Go to the market across from de Hema 4. Ate 4 haring met uitjes each 5. Ate fried mussels 6. En, natuurlijk: Patatje met en kroketjes Not at the same time but over about 3 hours as we walked the market.

I've heard Americans talk about Kale a lot. Like its a "superfood" and they put it in their smoothies and stuff... I never realized that Boerenkool is exactly that. Been eating that stuff for years. Mostly because "Kool" translates to Cabbage. Besides, there aint no better 'rookworst' than a Hema 'rookworst'

A challenge. You are eating, in the Netherlands, what appears to be a sausage roll. Why not pop over to the UK and do a taste test against a Gregg's sausage roll. In fact, you could spark a whole new conversation; 'where is the best sausage roll' (Jeremy Clarkson impersonation), 'IN THE WORLD'. When you have sorted that out, taking, maybe 2/3 years, you can focus on that sacred British tradition, (especially in the North), the best pork pie, and good luck with that. Guidelines for eating pork pies, a pork pie is minced pork, shrouded with a gellifed pork stock, encased in an hot water crust pastry. Traditionally you need to eat them fresh from the oven. Dennis Speeds about 11:00. Tues to Sat. I have no affiliation with Dennis Speed, it's just that the love of pies is very much a regional/tribal thing.
