My great grandmother was born in Sneek, Friesland. My parents went on a cruise to Friesland. I found a home where are my mother’s grandma was born. There were beautiful lace curtains in the windows and a gorgeous rug on the table. My mom really got a charge out of connecting with her family history in this way. I wish she was still alive so she could watch this episode❤

At 10:48 Translation of the label: "De sjirurch" means "The surgeon" (or more roughly doctor). The label says it is for "Shitskippers (captains of sailing ships that in the olden days transported dung), troubadours (traveling musicians) and other scum". "De beerenburg is myn sjirurg" (The beerenburg is my surgeon") is a song by Piter Wilkens. It is on KZbin.

Welcome in my hometown Sneek/Snits! I was born just a few houses down from Weduwe Joustra. Sneekweek is Europe's biggest inland water regatta (sailing competition), but most people only know it from the party in the city. It's always very busy. If you want to enjoy a sailing competition I would go look at SKS Skûtsjesilen, they race with old freightships, it's at the same time as the Sneekweek and they have races across Fryslân for two weeks. You can watch it from the water or land. Glad you enjoyed the treats here ❤

7:28 I will let it slide, but Frisian is an official language, not a dialect! Fun fact: Frisian is English's closest living relative with 80% lexical similarity. (I plucked that from Google) 10:48 "De Sjirurch" or as in Dutch "De Chirurg" translates to "The Surgeon", I don't know why they chose this name for the Beerenburg though.. I'm so happy you tried Beerenburg. Where I live we sometimes make jokes that if you travel from Groningen (the province) to Friesland you'd have to bring a bottle of Beerenburg as "toll payment". 19:31 Correct! Frisian drogeworst is wetter than the Groningse/Drenthse drogeworst. I personally prefer the Groningse drogeworst myself, even though I'm Frisian. Lovely video! It was really cool seeing some of the stuff I know through some fresh eyes.

Just make your way back and check all other bigger cities and the little towns have their charms too. In fact, maybe come back for a bikeride tour around and across the province, be sure to experience Fryslân from the water, lakes and canals sometime! Also, visit the remnants of the terpen/warden/wierden, hills of land that are scattered around northern Netherlands where people used to live when water overtook the land like swamps in earlier centuries. The Sneekweek-ecperience is one for the list too, as is visiting het skûtsjesilen (sail boat race) or some of the national parks or woods. When you decide to visit Heerenveen, I will gladly be your guide or meet up for a coffee :). En ga zo door met jullie Nederlands, dat begint erg goed te worden 🎉

Just noticed your channel today! You guys have a really great vibe with how you present the Netherlands! So I've like and subscribed! Would be a great next level and added value to see & hear guys interact in Dutch with the Dutch locals a bit more often throughout your videos here and there! It doesn't have to be fluent! Even if it'd be just a few words in basic beginners Dutch. By the way, there is actually a really special & unique dentist in Sneek! People from all over the country (even all the way from Limburg) travel to him for dental care! What makes him so special is the fact that he helps people restore dental health using a completely painless non toxic naturopathic method! Would be great if you could visit him next time you visit Sneek. Maybe even do a short interview with him about his unique method and also about Friesian history because he has a whole lot of fascinating knowledge about it! Also if you can, do visit the town of Stavoren in West Friesland. Stavoren is one of the stops on the Dutch Elfstedentocht. The Elfstedentocht is the "Eleven Cities Tour", a historical Dutch ice skating contest from city to city on natural ice held in the Dutch winter when winter temperatures get cold enough to allow for safe scating on natural ice! There is also a very special American fellow countrywoman of yours who lives in Stavoren, and whom you guys should definitely meet and interview one day! Looking forward to your next video! ❤

I found myself, more or less by accident, in Franeker many years ago. I was studying at the time and had the OV-card that came with it. In stead of studying at home, I regularly took the train, and went where ever it would go. When I found myself in Friesland one day, I kind of took the opportunity to watch around some more, until I arrived in Franeker. I liked it so much that I was back, just in time, at the railway station to get back home. Took many trips to Franeker after that, but haven't been there in many years. As far as I can tell from what you've shown us, it hasn't become worse. You could do worse than living in Franeker, but I don't think it would combine well with your traveling desires. As commented below, Frisian is an offshoot of Old English, while Dutch is an offshoot of Lower German, so the two languages are not mutually intelligible, even though they are both from the West-Germanic language family. I once read an interesting comparison. Someone from Maastricht has great difficulty understanding someone from say Groningen or Drenthe, yet both are in the Netherlands and both speak (a form of) Dutch. But that same person from Maastricht can easily understand someone from Aachen or Cologne, who lives in Germany and speaks (a form of) German. About the usage of the language: Not everyone in Friesland can sprak Frisian. In some communities, it is the first language they learn, and they only learn Dutch when they go to school. I once saw an interview with a Dutch speedskater who said that when she is in her hometown with her friends and family, she speaks Frisian because it feels more comfortable. It is an official language of the Netherlands, and local and provincial authorities in Friesland are required to communicate with people in Frisian if they ask for it, but it does not go much further than that. I don't know if you know the lyrics to Paradise by the Dashboard Light by Meat Loaf well, but here is the Frisian version: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hHK7gayvfpWBqKM From what I can understand of it, it sounds like a fairly literal translation.

Welcome back to our beautiful province! As a local, I absolutely love oranjekoek, but I can understand that it's not something everyone would enjoy. Also, if you like Franeker, you should definitely visit the city of Dokkum. It's even more pretty. I know that's a bold statement, but it was voted as one of the 5 most beautiful fortified towns by ANWB members. In most Frisian cities, you can hear different languages. Many speak Dutch, Frisian or Stadsfries. In many of the 11 cities, people speak Stadsfries, which is a mixture of Dutch and Frisian, with some local differences. In Sneek many speak Sneekers, which is similar to Liwwadders, Dokkumers, and others, which are all Stadsfries variants. Many people from outside the cities speak normal Frisian, sometimes with local influences. Almost everyone speaks Dutch as well, but many prefer to speak Frisian, Stadsfries or another dialect. Still get it? I know it sounds bit confusing. Another fun fact: Frisian is the closest related language to English out of any language in the world. Since you seem to like Berenburg, I would recommend trying Sonnema Berenburg from Dokkum (now produced in Bolsward, but they still sell it in Dokkum and all over the country as well). In some cafes and restaurants in Dokkum they also sell Dokkumer koffie, which is coffee with a bit of Berenburg in it, similar to Irish coffee. There is also a new luxury restaurant in Dokkum called Ode, their dishes are all made of local Frisian products. They claim to be a "new Frisian dining" restaurant. I haven't been there as it's a bit pricey, but maybe worth checking out if you want to try more Frisian products. It's located next to the Ice Fountain. Btw, the fountain in Sneek is currently under maintenance so they temporarily removed it. Let me know if you need more insider information, I'm here to help!

I can do without Oranjekoek, Suikerbrood and Berenburger, but whenever I'm in Friesland, I need to buy some Keallepoat (Calf's leg). It is a bit similar to Pepernoten or Taaitaai, but better (and available year-round instead of the months leading up to Sinterklaas).

Did you notis the bed cabin, by yse Ysinga? Cold een Bedstee. People slept in those! My grandfather had 2 of those. Very dork.

I was born and raised in Rotterdam, but a part of my ancestors , via my paternal grandmother's lineage, came from Friesland,18th century. Workum and Makkum to be more precise. So, If you ever go back to Friesland I suggest you visit Makkum and pick up a T-shirt with the coat of arms ( and then some) of the place.

What?? You were in Sneek? I live there, I wish I had ran into you. Sneek is a small city but the atmosphere is always very cozy somehow, in my opinion. Very gezellig! 🙂 And YES you should absolutely enjoy Sneekweek "the right way", it was amazing again. It lasts for a week, this year it was Friday August 2nd through Thursday August 8th. If you want to visit only one day (or rather, evening/night), I would recommend the opening on Friday, or otherwise Saturday, or Tuesday. Those are the busiest and best days. And book a hotel or camping place early, because there are tons of tourists.

Friesland is also famous for its cows among so many, many things. Also, when you go into some of the old buildings you will discover how small things might be because, centuries earlier, the Dutch people were not as tall as they are now so, yeah, stairs can be a challenge until you realize how "little" the Dutch were when they build these homes.

Ending on Aug 16, you "should" have visited the "Skûtsjesilen" sailing boat race of traditional Frisian barges ("flat bottom") under brown sails. It started Aug 3 this year. The Frisian word skûtsjesilen breaks down in skûtsje (in Dutch "schuitje" diminutive of "schuit" - barge) and silen (in Dutch "zeilen" - to sail under sail).

I like it that you use public transport to get around. Much better than always in a car

Never call Frisian a dialect… not only is it a language - it is officially the second language of the Netherlands. That means official documents and procedures can be innFrisian.

Nee geen dialect omdat de Friese taal er eerst was, daarna pas Nederlands
