Here in the Missouri Bootheel, it's arish too. Yesterday we had our ventless gas fireplace turned back on. After the utility company left, we left it on for a hour. The warmth felt so good. I'm excited to make this cake. I think I need to half it, too much goodness to have around for too long. A moment on the lips is a lifetime on my hips....ha ha. I have some apples in the freezer, I think I'll take out a bag and make this yummy cake. Thank you Tipper. ❤

I love cookbooks! My husband told me that l need to get rid of all of the cookbooks that we don’t use bc they are taking up too much space ( he cooks most of the time ) but l can’t , most of my cookbooks have memories attached to them . It was fun watching you and your daughter taste the cake . I was thinking that vanilla ice cream might cool it down 😉 Have a good week , can’t wait until the next chapter of Mountain Path 🥰

Thanks for the talk n recipe! Those are my favourite cookbooks too! I was fascinated the first time I found a church cookbook from “up north.” It was full of recipes unfamiliar and that used shellfish and such in it! Ps- those who are confused about the name of the cake: around here we call making cakes from an apple raw- it denotes that we aren’t going to be using canned apples, or applesauce or cooked apples- which would be more commonplace.

Love this cake. My MIL always made this cake in a bundt type pan and put caramel frosting on top. Well ,when I made it it would always fall apart. I never thought to make it in a 9x12 pan, as you suggested. LOL. Isn't it funny how family recipes are kind of sacred to us and can't be cooked any other way but by the recipe. This Fresh Apple cake looks so familiar to me. My grandma used to make one, same one bowl method and ingredients, except all the pecans were stirred in. Once she took her cake out of the oven she poked holes in the hot cake and poured a glaze or icing over it. It was a hot cooked icing made of butter, sugar and vanilla I think. It was so delicious, and similar to a light caramel flavor. I remember the cake so well, but cannot find the recipe. I think I may have to give it a try from memory. That’s a great treat on an damp and chilly fall day!

Growing up we had a big, Winesap apple tree in our back yard. I have literally eaten over a ton of apple cake. My mom didn't cook to a recipe but, my ex-wife wrote down a recipe to be like hers. It has a little more sugar, a half cup of raisins, a tsp of nutmeg added to your recipe and it baked at 325. We had wet cakes and dry cakes and that one was our favorite wet cake. If I only had some apples from that tree. Thanks for the memories.

I don't much care for apples, but I love Stayman Winesap apples! Used to get them at Styer's orchards in Morrisville, PA when I lived up there a couple decades ago. I miss those apples...can't find nary a one here in my hometown, New Bern, in eastern North Carolina.
@jerrym3261

@@johnnabuzby6103 There are several places to get Stayman Winesap apples here and they're all a little bit different from each other. Fruit trees in general and apple trees in particular can be modified and will modify themselves. You might have one branch on a tree that grows a different apple and you can graft that apple to make a tree and graft branches from that tree to make lots of trees. The Winesap tree we had was quite a bit different than any other. It wasn't better but, it was the one I grew up eating so, dear to me in that way. I vacationed on Hatteras Island for a lot of years, owned a house in Avon for 5 years, lived in that house for 3. It's a special part of the world.

@@johnnabuzby6103 No, sorry but, I've moved back to Louisville, KY. There are several orchards here that grow apple varieties including Stayman Winesaps. I don't eat or chase apples as much as I used to but, to me I think there's a big difference in the same apple variety from orchard to orchard. Most of the time a McIntosh is my favorite eating out of hand apple but, some years aren't good for them and I prefer another apple. On my counter right now I have Galas and Yellow Delicious. To me a Winesap is a cooking apple but I know they're lots of peoples favorite, my sister is one of those. I hope you find an apple you like. I do believe you're close to some of the best sweet potatoes I've ever eaten and I do miss Bluefish.

@@jerrym3261 North Carolina is the nation's leading producer of sweet potatoes. You're welcome to all the bluefish you can eat. . .you can eat my share of them, I've never been fond of the taste of bluefish. They almost have to be cooked the same day they're caught or they won't be fresh tasting. Hopefully you can make it here soon and get you some bluefish again. I hope so. If you're ever able to get there, and you haven't been already, I highly recommend you go to Ocracoke Island for a visit. I love it there. It's got such a laid-back vibe to it, and if you're a fan of figs, they grow them on the island and make fig preserves and all things fig. Yummy! I do like the taste of Honey Crisp apples as well, but they don't hold a candle to Winesap apples for me. Some of the ones I had in Pennsylvania were so red that the flesh inside had red veins running through them. They were tart-sweet in just the right proportion; I can see why you would consider them good cooking apples. Best wishes to you and yours from me here in eastern North Carolina!

My little grandson followed and made your earlier apple cake for his daddy's birthday almost by himself. I just put it in, and took it from the oven which was not bad for a five year old. He is now a great Ms. Tipper fan, so I guess he will be making this one at the weekend. We will try hazel nuts though, pecans being hugely expensive here. Thanks, as always, for the inspiration you give us.

Hey Tipper, I just found your channel. I'm Tracie Ronnie's daughter from NC, I think my grandma Hazel is your aunt?.. Wade was her Brother? I hope I am remembering correctly lol Love the cooking exactly the way grandma Hazel cooked and the way I learned to cook from her and still do! Loved listening to all her stories from my kin in the mountains. Now I can hear them from you. Glad to see you all are doing good. God bless you and yours.
