I watched in a documentary that wagashi is supposed to emulate the feeling of seasons, and wagashi are seasonal, so simon's description of it feeling like jumping into a lake is actually pretty legit for summer wagashi

Denmark have the strangest desserts I think. There's something called rød grød med fløde/red porridge with cream(WARNING!: if you visit Denmark, some Danes will probably challenge you to say rød grød med fløde, since there's so many ø's, and it's only in the danish alphabet!:P), which basically is a very watery rice porridge with a strawberry or any other berry(or a mix) sauce. You would often eat it in the summer. We also have something called æbleskiver(pancake puffs) in english appelskives. It's basically a very airy and puffy round pancake ball. The name literally means apple slices in Danish, even though apple in not an ingredient. You would usually eat this at Christmas time, with jam or sugar or powdered sugar. And since I'm also Turkish, here's some Turkish desserts, or the ones I know of. There's something called Baklava. It's super thin layers of filo dough with with walnuts inside, and on top you drizzle some sort of clear sugar water/syrup, which is DISGUSTINGLY sweet, which I personally hate. Every Turkish dessert or any other sorts of sweets are always ridiculously sweet, but some people like it. The only Turkish dessert I like is called tulumba tatlı. It's basically sweet fried dough(that has been through a piping bag with a star shaped tip, so it looks super cute in my opinion), soaked in sugar syrup, just like what you would drizzle over the Baklava. Any even though I said I don't like baklava and other Turkish sweets and desserts, I have grown to LOVE tulumba tatlı! I hope at least one or two read this and learned something new, cuz I think I just used 30-50 min. on this, haha! Love your videos Simon and Martina, I hope you are doing well in Japan

I live in the US, but my father's favorite dessert is rød grød med flød (my personal option is that he mostly just likes to say the words over and over)! I think it's delicious, but I've never made it with rice. Just simmered berries and rhubarb with a little sugar until they're mush, strained the juice and thickened it into pudding with cornstarch. It's really tangy and pretty strongly flavored that way. Oh, and I put whipped cream on top, too...best part...:)

Pavlova is our traditional Dessert in New Zealand. It has a crunchy meringue outside and inside its all marshmallo-y. We then top it with fresh whipped cream and fruit. Traditionally used fruit are strawberries and kiwi fruit but you can use anything really. Sometimes chocolate hail (lil chocolate thingies) or shaved chocolate is put on top as well. While you can have this all year round, we mostly have it around xmas.

The traditional deserts in Israel are mostly pastries with nuts, dates, raisins, and syrup. But of special note is halva, a sweet made from sesame paste mixed with honey or sugar and other flavorings. It has a flaky texture and melts in your mouth. That sesame paste on the dango you ate probably tastes similar (but with a different texture).

for me at home for dessert my mom always makes something with casava, taro or some other kind of starch. I just now realized a lot of desserts my mom makes (I'm cambodian) are are starchy or sticky and usually involves palm sugar and coconut milk. There's also a lot of things sticky rice is used in as well as glutinous rice flour. I think a lot of asian countries have their own version of mochi. In Cambodia it is filled with palm sugar and boiled so the sugar melts inside and topped with fresh coconut it's so good.

In Scotland (the North East anyway) we have butteries which are also known as Rosie, they're flattish discs of extremely rich salted pastry/dough which has had a huge amount of butter folded into it. They go great with strawberry jam! There's also more of the candy/confectionery side with Lucky Tatties, which are discs of solid confectioners sugar coated in cinnamon to look like a potato or "tattie". The "lucky" part of the name comes from when they used to include little silver charms back in the 1950s :)

Traditional candy in Brazil are fruit bars like goiabada (guava candy) and bananada (banana candy), corn desserts like canjica, pamonha and cural, cakes (like brazilian carrot cake 😍), doce de leite (or Dulce de leche for you english-spanish speaking fellas), sweet rice porridge (arroz doce), coconut sweets like Maria mole (kinda like a long coconut marshmallows) and cocada, and most importantly: condensed milk desserts. 10/10. Here goes a list: beijinho, cajuzinho, olho de sogra, pudim, quindim, pavê (😍), brigadeiro and many, many others. I'm from the southeast region, so I'm not even close to finishing the brazilian candy list!

No, the wagashi that they were eating were not supposed to be eaten with the leaves. There are some that you eat with the leaf though like Sakura Mochi, but the ones they bought were just for wrapping/decoration.

Mexican desserts get separated into two categories: sweet and savory. Savory sweets tend to mix tamarind with sugar as a base and then chili, lime, and fruits are added in different combinations. Beans are a big part of our diet but have no place in our desserts, rice on the other hand is occasionally used to make things like Arroz con Leche (rice pudding) or Horchata. Some baked goods use traditional flour as a base, but corn flour is also very common as a base. Pan dulce tends to be a bit drier than western dessert and not as overwhelmingly sweet. A popular filling in desserts is cajeta, a caramel made from goats milk. Mexican sweets range from sweet to salty, from fruity to spicy, some are dry and others are creamy. There is a lot to try and that's why I like Mexican sweets so much. :)

"EAT THE LAKE" "IT TASTES LIKE FRESHNESS" "I DIDN'T POOP IN THE LAKE YET" "THE BIG TURD" Just a conversation I made from your quotes. Literally in chronological order. I love you guys. XD Also, why do you now what chlorophyll tastes like? And I would get distracted by puppies too. Desserts in Germany? Um, cakes. And more cakes. AND CAKES. MOTHERF*CKIN CAKES. But there's a difference! There's "Kuchen" which is usually translated to cake. And then there's "Torte" which translates to fancy cake... ... I'm not even kidding. That's what it says on the respectable translating website. Lol. "Torten" have a lot more cream and fruit and stuff, so they do actually look very fancy. An example would be the "Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte". Chocolate cake, with cream and cherries, usually with (a shit ton of) cherry liquor. In English it's called Black Forest Cake. I think. I'm sure you've heard of it :D

It'd be easy to read incorrectly...the 'ka' character and 'ga' character are the same, except for a small set of two marks in the upper right...there are several instances of this but 'ka'->'ga' is extra hard because it already contains a small stroke in that corner. Compounded by the fancy brush 'fonts' you're likely to find in an old-fashioned store...
@bsidethebox

...er, that's in hiragana (phonetic 'spelling'), which is what they'd probably be reading.

+Ziphyrr Yes. I was responding to merirusama, who was guessing the mistake was made because S&M are more familiar with Korean. I haven't studied Korean so I can't speak on that, but I have struggled with mistaking ka/ga in hiragana. I thought I'd put forth an alternate theory as to the cause.

In the Philippines there is lecheflan (something similar to creme caramel), Biko (I'm not sure my self if i should consider this as a dessert but its a sweetened sticky rice topped with ubod (idk the english but it is sweetened coconut)) , Kalamay (again. not sure if it is a dessert but its a sticky rice cake usually topped with the sweetened coconut thing), taho (or i would like to call it as Soy pudding covered with vanilla caramel sauce and sago (the chilled version is a dessert but i dont know about the hot one) Halo Halo (Mixture of Ube (i think its purple yam) kaong, nata (sweetened coagulated coconut water) lecheflan, red beans, lanka (i forgot the others since it vary from place to place) then crushed ice then covered with a mixture of condensed milk and evaporated milk. there's a lot more. but i cant mention them since well they vary from place to place (we have like more than 7k islands and 3k of which is inhabited and most of them have different things )

Its been so lovely watching your journey. You've lifted my spirits during some tough times. Thank you. When are you going to to more shows about the mundane aspects of life in Japan like you did way back when in Korea? Simple things such as, doing laundry, grocery shopping, have you figured out the garbage/recycling thing ... etc. For those of us not in Japan it would be ever so educational, insightful, and fun for us to see how the little things are done in your neck of the woods. :D Keep up the marvelous work, you're amazing!
