oh no, don't be like me with brushes! I'm a bit lazy, so even if when I buy a new brush I spend the first days treating it like a kind of deity/baby child in need, after a while I just get tired of slow down my painting process to be careful not to put the color on the ferrule .__. On the other hand, talking about the wet palette, I'm aware of the "do not put metallic color on wet palette" theory, but I honestly never found out a real evidence of it: I never noticed metallic pigments on the sponge, let alone metallic pigments that find a way to contaminate other colors directly from the sponge. Maybe I'm lucky, or maybe my wet palette doesn't work .__.

You're damn right, that's proper 'Eavy Metal standard. Your skill is incredible (not to mention your patience with armour edge highlighting!). It's the subtle details that make it, plus the overall balance of tones, plus the smoothness of the finish. It was an education to watch you create the effect of cracked leather. The result is really quite beautiful, certainly the best Black Templars I've seen (sorry Maxime).
@DurginPaintForgeMiniatures4 жыл бұрын
Thanks, Mike, I really appreciate ^___^ Personally I love this style, I was grown up following the 'Eavy Metal tutorials on White Dwarf and despite the miniatures painting art has evolved so much during the last years I'm still too attached to this style to abandon it XD I plan to keep going with this kind of videos, Space Marines are maybe a saturated topic but they are interesting to paint and above all they allow me to show you many techniques and colors u__u Said so, I would like also to engage you with something more "technical", I would like to start some Golden Demon entry (I don't know when there will be a new one, but it's better to start in advance :D)!

I’m jealous of ppl with this amount of skill. And no amount of practice can get me to this level. I’ve been “practicing” for 30 yrs now. Lol. Amazing!
@DurginPaintForgeMiniatures4 жыл бұрын
Well, I understand your feelings because for a long time I felt like being stuck in a kind of limbo where, even if I practiced a lot, I saw no progress. Luckily, painting miniatures is not a crucial life-skill, so as soon as you enjoy it it's cool! Said so, do not believe that what you're seeing is not within your reach, at all! These are basic techniques, that don't require extreme artistic knowledge nor talent, it's more, well, a "scientific" approach. Think about the edge highlight, that is the 90% of the armor look: it's just painting a line, as thin as possible, on all the edges of the miniature: at the beginning, your hand is not accurate and you might paint too thick lines or trembling ones! But you can fix mistakes easily, by using the basecoat color to restore the lines giving them a more uniform shape. With some practice, your hand will become more firmly and you will need to fix less mistakes, and so on. At first, don't look at the overall result, it's too complex: focus yourself on simple tasks. The two basic skills that I suggest to focus on are clean lines and dilution. Reading your comment (and many other) I'm convinced more and more that I need to make a proper video on very basic techniques u__u
@liquidtoad39104 жыл бұрын

Ottimo video come sempre! Like like! 😁👍🏻
@DurginPaintForgeMiniatures4 жыл бұрын

Marvelous finish! Slick and black as a moonless night. Thank you for the post! Had a quick question regarding your AB clean-up, if I may. If you could kindly shed light on these two points, I'd appreciate it immensely. Thanks again!
@DurginPaintForgeMiniatures4 жыл бұрын
Thanks ^__^ About airbrush, pleas consider that I'm a savage beast, for what concerns AB: I have very low airbrushing skills and I use only cheap and oversized airbrushes because in my hands they have a very short life u_u" said so (I know, not the most reassuring premise XD), my actual aibrush is a kind of highlander, I'm using it for almost a year and I had only to replace the needle once because it fell off my desk. I clean it using only water and Chanteclair degreaser, and I generally dilute my color with water and a couple of drops of Vallejo Airbrush Flow Improver, no matter if they are citadel, vallejo or andrea (the range I usually use). I'm sorry for not being extremely helpful in this specific topic, I suggest you to follow Angel Giraldez's channel: kzbin.info/door/QVY6ZD9YjxwPzJqJ6DcHgA you probably know him, because he's one of the best painters out there, and he's also great with airbrush!

Wow that’s excellent brush work. Could you go over the gold receive for the shield trim? I didn’t catch it in the video. Thanks.
@DurginPaintForgeMiniatures4 жыл бұрын
Of course! The gold is a mix between Retributor Armor and Ironwarrior: I mixed them in a ratio 60%/40%, but then it's up to you, the more Ironwarrio you add to the mix, the colder and greener the gold will be ^^ With metallic color is crucial to paint a smooth basecoat, so keep the color diluted (with equal part of water) and paint several coats 'till you have a nice, uniform basecoat. Once ready, I gave a wash with Agrax Earthshade Gloss mixed with a bit of Anthonian Camoshade (optional, I noticed that the Anthonian was barely visible...). For a tabletop mini, you can stop here, but if you want to add more details, I then added some glazes of Contrast Snakebite Leather, diluted with an equal part of Contrast Medium to enhance the shadows of the gold and make it more deep and interesting, and then I add some glazes of Contrast Gore Grunta Fur (diluted too) to make the deepest recesses more intense. Then I add some runefang steel to the basecoat mix, and I highlight the edges of the gold ^^

What's the base color for the Tabard (before your put Wraithbone) ? Great job !
@DurginPaintForgeMiniatures4 жыл бұрын
It's Baneblade Brown (actually I used Khemri Brown, a colour that GW don't produce anymore. Baneblade Brown is the equivalent one of the new range)

Absolutely fantastic! I watched this video 3 times! Could you tell me how much you dilute colour when you paint edge highlights? Your colour is always correctly liquid, not too much dry or dilute. I have always a lot of problems! What is the secret to do line so straight and slim?Thanks a lot!
@DurginPaintForgeMiniatures4 жыл бұрын
Thanks!! About dilution, it mostly depends on the specific colour and only experience can tell you how much to dilute it, but let's say that in general I use two kinds of dilution: •standard: for edges that I have to paint "directly" (I mean, when the edge is not so "edgy" so I can't just use the side of the brush, but I have to literally draw the line with my brush -for example, the edges of the knee, or the edges of the chest or arms) I do not dilute too much the color, about 1 part water, 2 part color and a bit of Lahmian Medium. I paint a couple of lines, or even one, then I wash the brush, reload it and so on. •edgy edges: for those edges that are very "edgy" (for example, the side edges of the legs, or the shoulder pads trim, or the collar or the edgy plate above the knee in primaris armor), I paint them using the side of the brush: this way is very easy and fast to have perfect lines. In this situation, I keep the color slightly more diluted, because I want that it flows better. If, with this technique, you use a too thick color, it's very likely to paint big and not uniform lines. So with "edgy edges" use a more diluted color, keep a very few amount of it on the bristles and then use the side of the brush to paint. You have to paint 2-3 layers to obtain a perfect result, but it's easier to do it than to explain it, believe me :D

Wow, this paint job is *phenomenal*! So clean and crisp. Amazing work, new subscriber right here. How many coats of yellow did it take to get a smooth basecoat over black? I've really struggled with this!
@DurginPaintForgeMiniatures4 жыл бұрын
Thanks, Chris, welcome! :D Averland sunset is probably the best yellow color ever produces (apart the legendary Foundation Iyanden Darksun): despite it has decent brightness, it has also a fair coverage! To avoid lumps, I preferred to paint 3-4 diluted coats and take my time. If you have to paint large surface, I always suggest to use airbrush (like I did with the Imperial Fists that we are about to upload :D), but for surfaces like that vulkite pistol, it's better to spend a couple of minutes more and be sure to have a perfect coat. The risk with yellow, in fact is that having a bad coverage, people usually paint thick coats, gaining only a very bad result. Of course, if you want to speed the process is better to start with a white base, but I'm not a fan of it.
@punkcabbage4 жыл бұрын
@@DurginPaintForgeMiniatures I've been there - yellow not covering very well and then thinking, that I must be over thinning it. Then the next coat is too thick and doesn't look so good! Thank you for taking the time to reply, really appreciate it!

i love watching your edge highlighting, might i ask how often you have to reapply paint to the brush becuase it goes dryish?io feel as though im doing it way too often... and have to add water constantly to stop the paint from drying out
@DurginPaintForgeMiniatures2 жыл бұрын
It depends, thanks to these brushes quality and size I'm able to load them with a big amount of paint, so depending on the color I use (some colors are richer in pigments and dry quickly), I can paint 2-3 edges before having to reload my brush!

@DurginPaintForgeMiniatures4 жыл бұрын
I've seen many requests about brushes, and especially about how to keep a sharp tip! Indeed, I think that 90% of the job is done by W&N, they are awesome brushes, I think that they worth any € spent on them (unfortunately, a lot XD).
@darkeningaspect66604 жыл бұрын
Could be the basis for a video, if you're into hobby tips as well as tutorials :) Yeah I had a really good time with them on the first go. So I suspect I've either got paint in the ferrule that I'll need to soak out or there's a technique I'm not quite getting hold of to maintain it through a whole painting session.

Holy shit dude ur edge highlighting skills are something that I would dream to have. How are you edge highlighting with such speed? I take easily 2 hours on a single model edge highlighting and even my lines are never that straight and I have to fix it up most of the time. I also notice that during the same area edge highlighting you are able to widen the highlight slightly as you go, how the heck do you achieve that ? Again awesome video was very relaxing to watch.

So strong Paintjob. How long you need for this awesome Edgehighlights?
@DurginPaintForgeMiniatures3 жыл бұрын
well, I noticed that in 2-3 hours I edge highlight the first light the whole armour, the next steps are a bit faster, cause you have to paint less edges!
@tomfson86094 жыл бұрын
How many coats did you use to get that yellow on the gun? I'm asking since yellow often doesn't have the best coverage and especially on black
@DurginPaintForgeMiniatures4 жыл бұрын
about 3 diluted coat of Averland Sunset. If you want to speed up the process, with an airbrush is pretty simple, fast and effective, or just paint it over a white/light grey base ^^

ahaha, it's just a matter of practice, if you pay attention on the techniques that I used, you will easily realize that they are pretty simple: it's just a matter of doing straight lines and "clean" washes :D Maybe one day I can make a video with more basic techniques, just to give you a more clear explanation of them ^^

@@DurginPaintForgeMiniatures the flow you get off your brush is... insane. I've never been able to get that right... it dries in 0.0001 of a second or i touch the model and the titanic comes flooding out
@DurginPaintForgeMiniatures4 жыл бұрын
@@wolfworks101 that is indeed the most difficult part of the "painting improvement", do not get discouraged about that because ALL of us have to deal with it even after years of practice. There is not a kind of holy grail of dilution, because you'll easily realize that different colors/brand/hues/techniques require their own dilution ratio! Only with practice you'll get that experience that will tell you how to dilute a color, unfortunately I have no secrets about that T__T Said so, consider these principles: •when I have to edge highlight, I don't dilute too much the color: it's a waste of time! Instead, I just keep it about 80%color/20%water (or, better, Lahmian Medium). For this task you need a kind of creamy consistency. •when I have to paint with classic transitions (like the tabard), I dilute the color with a kind of watercolor consistency, so very diluted: about 20% color, 80% water (with a bit of Lahmian Medium, that helps you to maintain a kind of coverage).

Why did you apply matt varnish before continuing to paint the shield? Was it for better paint adhesion?
@DurginPaintForgeMiniatures4 жыл бұрын
Principally because of paint adhesion, but also to avoid a "caramelized armor" effect :) I gave a gloss coat to help the wash to flow into recesses and increase the capillarity, but the glossy finish is weird looking u__u
