BACKHAND TOPSPIN Mid-Rally | eBaTT - TUTORIAL #37
While Eli is away coaching in Goa India, I took the opportunity to develop a video on the backhand topspin.
Tip 1: Technique
You need to try your best to use your whole arm in harmony, this means using a little shoulder, forearm, and wrist and they should work in synch. And if you only wrist means you won't generate the energy and power and if you don't use your wrist and, only your forearm you will not generate lots of spin.
Tip 2. Training off the table
A great tool to use and can be fun to practice by yourself or with friends is using a credit card. This is a great tool to develop your technique and it's like throwing a frisbee. Another motion that you can practice is bouncing the ball just in front of you as seen in the video. This will aid you to focus on technique and you can self analyse the movement and stroke. Try your best to rotate the wrist to inject more speed and spin,
Tip 3. Timing and when to hit the ball:
Difficult to give a straight answer for this because it all depends on what kind of ball you're receiving. try to focus on good positioning this is around one arm and one bat away from the table at a 45-degree angle. Then you want to do your best to hit the ball at around the top of the bounce. This point often will allow you to generate maximum power, spin and give you leeway for potential errors. Relaxed arm and firm up a little before the point of contact its an art form and takes time to learn the motion. Throwing a card or frisbee is a great tool to use.
The Aim:
Produce spin, speed, control, and consistency over time.

This is the best backhand instruction I've seen, bar none. First he shows you how you need to use your wrist and forearm. That's huge. And he's spot on with the biomechanics of the wrist twisted or cocked back so the bat faces the chest and then using the arm coming forward until right before contact he uses his wrist and forearm. I also love how he uses a credit to recreate the frisbee like throwing motion. This is outstanding instruction.

This is great advice. The biomechanics of the stroke explained and also the importance of brushing the ball with a closed bat angle. I would add that it's important to make contact with the ball near the end of the bat as that is the part of the bat that is moving the most, I always play a better quality ball when I manage to do this. Look at the marks on the rubber surface left by the ball after hitting quite a few balls, this his how I realized I was hitting too close to the handle, which I still do during matches.

One of the best instructional sessions on the backhand loop. Clear, and very well explained, and also demonstrated the relationship between the arm and the wrist, and I have always wondered about this. Do I use the wrist, do I use just the arm? If I use both, how does that work? You answered that very well. This is a video I can back to over and over again. Is it unusual that I find the forehand loop so much easier to do than the backhand? Seems to be less moving parts on the forehand. Thanks again for a job well done!

Rising to the task ,well done Guy ! This was definetly your top appearance so far ,I'm impressed. Very nice demonstration and very good points . I certainly witnessed my kid adopting that pronounced late wrist snap with my kid recently and this has proven aweinspiring effective ,almost like a whip, but pure brushing motion. I 'd love to see a comparison of different backhand topspin techniques and your take on if there is value in adopting more than just 1 variant . Caro loves the balls out full body bh Topspin ,whole body twist variant ,where you hit the ball more to the side of your stomach , but she had to find out this works only for a limited range of incoming balls .How set the breakpoint from using whole body side of the stomach hitting point to the Forearm and wrist dominated ts you beautifully demonstrated? my gut feeling is its more than just a decision of how far inro the backhand corner the ball is,about to go but also a height thing ? In your tutorial most incoming balls were quite high over the net and its very tempting and effective to smash those?

Great video and timely for me. My backhand shots are "ok" at best (in other words not great). I really want to develop the backhand flick especially when receiving a ball with topspin. For some reason, I do seem to be able to get the flick to work when I receive a ball with backspin but not so well with topspin. Thanks for posting.

Hi from New Zealand. You have a very natural looking backhand thanks for sharing... Currently I am practicing hitting ball against a board on oppersite side of table due to being in lockdown. May I ask when you are bringing your arm back (to start the shot) as the wrist snaps back naturally.. Then when you start the motion forward with your arm.....are you using your thumb to help bend the wrist forward or are you using the very end of the bat handle as leverage where in contact with your palm of hand.. I can use one or the other.. Which do you use??
@markcorson3815

thanks so much very informative... i am a little confussed... you say to release the wrist (and more arm) on contact with the ball however when i watch you in slow motion you seem have already released your wrist way before contact with the ball..

I want it to go rightwards to the opponents left (i'm right handed) but the ball just curves leftward to my opponents right side ackwardly. Any tips? Main idea is I want the ball to go cross court diagonally.
