The letter opener is outstanding! Nice find. Great research too GTR. The Belzer ratchet was a nice score too.

All good stuff, but that letter opener is particularly lovely - great find!

Those round symbols on the letter opener look like medals, of the type frequently awarded to companies in the Victorian/Edwardian era. It is a lovely object!

Maybe I'll put it on the microscope and take a couple of pictures to see if we can identify those, seems quite interesting.

Wow, i can remember using that kind of impact driver to open the cross head screws on VW bug doors. My dad already knew it was going to end in pain and tears. lol

it says saw, knife and tool factory. They made tools, knifes and saws ;-)

The letter opener was probably an expensive gift for customers. All I could find about this: Eduard Altena "Gemsbockwerk" Remscheid-Hasten Gemsbockwerk = chamoisbuckfactory = company trademark www.holzwerken.de/museum/hersteller/bildmarken/marke005.jpg

Thanks, yeah I found a couple of mentions in books that have knife brand markings but that is about it. There were a lot of tool companies in the Remscheid/Cronenberg/Solingen area during this period. I'll keep an eye out to see if I can find a Saw blade with the same marking.

A remaining company from that time with maybe the same product range. www.ritus.de/unternehmen_palette_en.htm

To the letter opener: It is surely an old one. Remscheid-Hasten is the location. Remscheid is the town and Hasten is the district (often a former village that is later grown into the town). Sägen-Messer-u. Werkzeugfabrik Means “Saw-Knife-and Tool-factory”. The symbols on both sides of the mark are won medals from exhibitions. The brass itself are stamped pocket knife scales that where produced for little knifes made as advertising gifts. Such knives you can still get from carl-schlieper.de/index.php?index .They build them with old scales; I guess you could get some with your own design too. The impact driver looks really like there was water in that plastic tray and it was derusted. The top where the bits go in is normally a piece only put on a square like that on the ratchet. So you can use all different tools that fit on the square.

Thank you, I was wondering why I couldn't find Hasten on the map.

You can find Hasten easily: de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hasten
