The shop made safety edge is also a way to restore the effectiveness of cutting into corners. The 90 deg. corners on the edge of the files chip and lose teeth. Grinding off the edge makes the worn file cut into corners again. Handy for cutting keyways.

I never thought about a safety edge and it makes a huge amount of sense when you described it like that!

That is a great lot of tools. Easily worth 5 or more times what you paid. .I have a Challenger hammer and it's a beauty. You made a short hammer man out of me. I recently acquired a 3-1/2 lb factory made with a very short handle and it is just perfect.

As a Long Time FOTS, I have a few episode suggestions: 1. Tool storage (user tools vs displays vs preservation). 2. Learn Together Episode: Welding (seems like most of us restoration guys haven’t yet ventured into the welding world). 3. Fire Hydrant Follow-up (demonstration of hydrant tool on the real deal).

Great deal on that lot! I'd love to be able to not buy as many tools as you don't. Good info on the safety edge on the file. I've seen them but never really thought about it. Makes sense.

Interesting about the offset in the handle bore; rarely do I see a short handled ball peen. Amazingly when I do come across one, the one’s with short handles are not broken, so we’re on to something here. Nice assortment in that haul! Thanks

When you first showed the issue of the ball-peen hammer, I thought you should have put on a short handle. And you did! Several of my needle files have a safety edge for the purposes you described. We had a change of division codes at work and the new division wanted a full inventory of the prototype machine shop that had been in operation since the 1970s. They had many duplicates of milling bits, cutters, short and jobber drills, taps, dies, reamers, vises and tooling. Some was sent to another facility. But they still had carts full of excess. I made sure it didn't get scrapped.

Thank you for the Ebay advice. Alot of Ebay stuff is getting expensive, even without the shipping costs. One of my hopes is that if I watch enough videos by pros like SC and Magdad among others, that an instinct for spotting nice, unique tools at low prices will rub off on me. That is a very nice job on the Channelock hammer head. It looked to me like you used a disc sander to clean up those curved facets which to me would take good skill. My father used to say "Happy ss a clam" but h e would say the rest of the saying which is "Happy as a clam at high tide." Another great video. Thanks

Your comment about Ebay being expensive reminded me of a time that I took a car into to have an estimate on having some work done. The guy really didn't want to work on it (it was an English car) and he told me that it would be expensive, and that was without parts and labor!! I went elsewhere

Great eBay lot score. Some fun things in that pile. Great clean up of the hammer. I like the added touches. And the short handles make sense. We all choke up on hammers all of us.
@OldSneelock

The thinner wooden handle on a striking hammer absorbs the vibration better. A lighter head with a longer handle adds speed to the head and creates power. Hammering on an anvil it is bes to have a looser grip so the vibration isn't transmitted to your wrist. The lighter head is easier to swing for hundreds of blows. Short handles are nice for what we use to call "tunking", Tapping a block of steel into place on a milling machine to make sure it was up against the stop. Also to seat die sections on the shoe during assembly. For hardened steel I had a 2" diameter chunk of copper about 5 inches long without any handle and just gripped it in my fist to tap the steel without damage. 😁😎

I've gotten some amazing deals off eBay the last couple weeks too. Basically about $300 worth of stuff for about 10 Bucks with free shipping and a couple weeks before that I got some nice ball valves that I needed for about 75%+ off what it would have cost me to buy up at the hardware store..............Dad has had the same Ball Peen as long as I can remember and never broke the handle.......It's a steel handle.....I'm wondering if it's an Estwing (the rubber handle grip reminds me of my Estwing drilling hammer), I'll have to take a look at it next time I'm there.

Another great Video. The shipping to Canada makes eBay purchases less economical, but it is still helpful for hard-to-find items. I have never seen a safety file, even though I had some exposure to master filers in my younger days. At one time the mines had large machine shops with highly skilled craftsmen. They still utilized files to undertake some repairs. I have seen some large casting jobs that had to melted down due to some tolerance problems( casting sand problems), the air was turning blue, and it wasn't from the furnace. Is that what went wrong with the channel lock? I forgot about working on my cursive writing after a while. Cursive writing and more short handle hammers this new year.

The reason there is more taper on a ball peen handle is because it is for striking metal and it allows for more flex which reduces reverberation to your hand and also limits rebound, so the handle suffers but you don’t lol!

To my eternal shame I only currently have one hammer in my collection, it's a Bacho claw hammer so it's quite a nice one. I am consoling myself however that I also have a wooden mallet which is technically a hammer, therefore staving off the madness inherent with only owning one of the aforementioned bludgeoning implements... P.s. I really like the nut-cracker tool, there's probably a thousand channels on KZbin that would benefit from having one (or several) of those...🙂

I could’ve used the nutcracker a few days ago. I had to get two carriage bolts out of some wood and the previous person put the nuts on so tight they embedded into the wood and stripped the threads. The threads were so messed up, even with pliers pulling and twisting the nut up onto the good thread it would not engage. I ended up having to use a zero clearance vibrating cutter with a bimetal blade to get most of it cut through, I then took a chisel gave it a few good whacks, split the nut in half. I sacrificed a little bit of wood, but at least I didn’t risk breaking the wood in half as it was relatively thin.

That pair of Vise-grips and the nut splitter was worth more than the $20. When I worked on buses and trucks, I had a 4lb. sledge with a handle about 12" long. Used it to knock out axles. If the handle had been any longer than that, it would have been unsafe to use. I have no problem with a short handled hammer.
