Washing your saddle, gear and accessories in scent free detergent in washtub or 5-gallon bucket, discussing a proper scent control regimen, scent free laundry detergents, hanging washed saddle and gear outside to air dry, and requesting John’s scent control regimen documents (he promises not to tell anyone).

Dead down wind is different than All, Tide, Purex unscented detergents in that Dead Down Wind is Enzyme based. I believe Scent Lok detergent also contains their Silver Alloy Treatment. Slightly different than your common commercial detergents. I use Tide free and clear for all my regular wear clothing and try to stick to Dead down wind, elimishield, or Scent Lok for hunting clothing.

Just come across this video looking for a better way to clean my saddle. I train police dogs for scent-work, as well as my personal dogs for hunting. Theirs a ton of research on a dogs nose. Training these dogs and knowing what I know has made me neurotic about my scent control regiment. Is it 100% effective against a deers nose? No. But nothing is 100% when you’re hunting. Scent control, in conjunction with other measures will be more effective than any one measure used alone. Keep doing what you’re doing. I appreciate, and enjoy your videos. Thank you for all you do!

Early season here in southern MO/Ark there is no way to hunt without bug spray until middle of October so scent control isn’t happening until it freezes or you’ll die of tick born illness..

I think the reason that many hunters like myself have abandoned scent control is because the amount of time and effort required to maintain it caused too much stress and anxiety and it unintentionally took some of the fun out of bowhunting. I would personally rather be less succussful and have fun than more successful and be stressed out by the scent control regiment. To each his own. Thanks for sharing all the good info for the guys that want to go that route.

As I mention, you have to be detail oriented and it does require more work that just hunting the wind. It's all about what a hunter wants out of hunting and of course, where a hunter hunts has a lot to do with what opportunities they recieve and how much they have to deal with certain things that hunters in pressured areas have to deal with if they want to kill mature bucks.

Excellent advice John. Your lifetime of work on scent management (not elimination) has changed hunting; deer, bear, anything with a nose and fear of humans. Thanks. And by the way, I’m glad a lot of hunters refuse to try your methods, and tell lies to other hunters about how they don’t work. It means more mature deer for me! We who know should get together and pay you to stop educating people! PS: I’m gonna fund more forums that tell lies about scent control! The Pants In Boots hunters forum!

Thanks Ben and I know you don't pay attention to wind either and you hunt in a very tough state concerning pressure. If I can help some of these new hunters be more successful, it makes me feel good and I'm certainly not doing any of this for the money as I don't get any. Have turned down many opportunities to promote products and always will. I may design something that helps, but not just promote for the money like the TV guys do.

Non scentlok garments should always be worn on the inside of scentlok whenever possible. They gather scent particles extremely rapidly and do not absorb it. Scentlok doesn't completely remove all scent but rather brings it down to a level that deer don't see it as a threat - Joe

John, Have you seen where Carbon Synergy works as good as Scent Lok? (product to infuse clothing with activated carbon). I spent a lot of money last year on new hunting cloths that is not Scent Lok. Also, have you seen where treating your clothes with ozone helps at all? Thank you John. I’ve hunted for 25 years and I’ve learned more from you in the last 4 months.

you can buy activated carbon in a powder and colloidal silver to treat any garment, just throw the garment in a tub, use distilled water and shake and bake it. the carbon powder will darken your clothing a tad even after it dries, so use less than you think you need but it will absolutely do the trick, youll need to reapply after washing but not drying. you can spray the silver solution on you base garments, if you want it on your clothes, i spray my body after showering with silver it works great. ill use an ozone generator in a tub if i don't have clothes to swap into as a dry wash, but i wont use it in the woods because of its smell. youll want to store the carbon powder in an air tight container so it does not continually absorbs compounds. the silver should be kept in a dark bottle. hope this helps.

I try to do most of this stuff. I am the only one out of family and friends that does anything for scent control. Makes it tough when hunting with them. The stuff I can't wash or put in the drier gets ozone treated in the truck the night before the hunt eg: pack, bow, sticks, platform, range finder, binos. My scentlok gets reactivated while I am getting ready in the morning. I am fully invested in scentlok. Every deer hunting garment I own is scentlok. Thanks for the detergent tip. I have been buying the hunting brand products for years. Have any views on ozone? I know in high concentrations it smells strongly for quite a while.

Really enjoy your information. I was always interested in saddle hunting from your articles in Woods n Waters, then figured I'd give it a try after seeing the Tethrd guys on THP. Went with the Phantom and got my best bow buck out of it. So I was pumped. But after watching your videos of your preference for the two panel saddle, I figured I'd try it out because you know what you're talking about. And you were right! I got the ESS, and once I made a couple of modifications which, judging from your videos, I think you also ended up doing, loved it and I'll be selling the Phantom. Please post when and where the saddles will be available at retail outlets here in Michigan, as I will definitely be getting another as a spare. And you were right about the platform too. I use an ozone in my van and that's it. Ozone machines leave a foreign ozone odor on garments that can spook deer in heavily pressured lands. I know a TV hunter that was sponsored by the top ozone overhead machine on the market and he killed a bunch of P&Y bucks on TV using the ozone machine overhead and guess what, he resides in Michigan and doesn't use it on his own property because it spooks mature deer due to the foreign odor. Just goes to prove that TV fantasy land deer will tolerate a ton of things that mature bucks in heavily pressured areas, will not tolerate.

Amen to that Brook! If I were a non hunter and all I had to base what deer hunting is about was from watching TV, I would lean to the anti hunting side as they make it look almost unfair because it is so easy where they hunt and anyone can sit in a box blind and shoot one of the many bucks that come into the exposed short fields they hunt. I would be embarrassed to kill a deer under the conditions they hunt.

@johneberhart4062
@johneberhart4062 3 жыл бұрын
In the ScentLok activated carbon tests done at Rutgers University for the District Court in Florida, using 10,000 times more odor molecules than the human body could produce in 24 hours, ScentLok's activated carbon lined garments adsorbed 96 to 99% of the odor molecules. So I guess there could be some miniscule odor, but in the past 20 years, I have not been winded. Been picked before, but not winded and tonight I had 11 does and fawns 360 degrees around me for over an hour and never had a head raise to test the wind. It could be that they think the danger is too far away, I don't know for positive.
@B.r.i.a.n.1

@@johneberhart4062 the tests were not done for the district court. They were "closed system" tests done for and under specific consitions paid for by scent lock to be used in the discovery process( and probably all of the other big name defendants in that case). There were expert witnesses that called into question actual carbon coverage on the fabric sighting numbers in the 20% and one expert said it would be innefective in preventing odor from the human breath, he said it would go right through the gaps.

@@B.r.i.a.n.1 I have sat tucked in the woods after practicing scent control and had a hunting dog walk right past me. I wasn't even wearing scentlok at the time. Animals can be fooled. I've seen it happen time and time again. Making the effort to control scent pays off.

I heard on a podcast that you ziploc your #2 s if thats true that next level
@MexicanMovie

Funny you mention that. 4 years ago i had to take a #2 right as i got to my spot in the river bottoms, so i did it in some tall grass about 75 yards from the tree i was gonna climb. I had just gotten up the tree and got situated and i heard some snorting sounds which turned out to be 2 giant horse sized does... they sniffed my #2 and both bolted out of there really quick. It was still dark but just enough grey light that i could make them out. Ziploc isn't a bad idea, i think I'd better pack a couple for my first ever "Eberhart Year" !!!!!

Hey John! Good info as always. Could you do a video on your layering and what scent lok garments you’d recommend at different points in the year? I’d like to invest in the clothing line. I’m just unsure if I should do outer most layer as scent lok always, or if the base layers being scent lok is enough. Thanks!
@robertferrier9536
@robertferrier9536 3 жыл бұрын
In some of John’s older videos he states that having scentlok as the outer most layer is most important. He actually prefers merino wool base layers rather than activated carbon. Merino wool is antimicrobial and more comfortable.

I'll write that down for a video as layering undergarments and changing on stand is an art form in itself. It's awesome when you can have a hunt and be comfortable the entire time. With that said, I don't live in the south where it can be 85 degrees. I would have to figure something out for that and it would be difficult as I break a sweat pretty easy.

You’re right about the heat. Normally during November it will get down into the 40-60s range. It is a wide range of temps we can experience before it actually stays cold. I definitely don’t layer on bibs or outer shells until hitting the stand. Our walks in are about like yours John.

I've been treating my saddle and backpack with a large ozone air cleaner in a small closet and it seems to do the trick. I'm also a carbon garment guy. Are those detergents safe for carbon garments then too?
@kentuckywildcat2592
@kentuckywildcat2592 3 жыл бұрын
You have to watch using ozone on safety gear. Too much of it can deteriorate certain fabrics/rubber, etc.

@@kentuckywildcat2592 - Thanks. I was wondering about that. I guess I will only use it when I don't have time to wash and dry it or when it's too cold out to air dry it outside.

You shouldn't wash carbon garments and if you do, don't use any detergent, just wash in cold water.
