I live in Japan, so this hostility to bikers is just completely alien to me. Bikers are literally part of the driving tests here. If you don't drive in a way that convinces the test proctor that you're aware of bikers 100% of the time, they just fail you instantly. It's not even a question.

@D3faulted 1 just so you know in the UK, not Japan, we are taught to adhere to bikers and other motorists when they disobey the road laws. We are taught to not engage and leave it to traffic officers most we can do is record and report. In fact you can actually be fined if you try to tell people the law. I know as an escooterist who actually got someone fined for dangerous driving from my helmet cam footage. They were shouting at me for riding illegally clearly not being aware of thier surroundings as they hit a kirb (Know that privatly owned e scooters are illegal in the UK, but I wasn't prosecuted as I was being safe on the cycle lane). I didn't try and lecture them I just went to the police station on my scooter and presented them the video. Showed in court a few weeks later and the guy got points on his licence and a fine. I was very smug. But I think the system worked, while we were both being illegal due to how I reacted I was let off while he wasn't as he was the one being a danger

I’ve rode my bike safely for years and always encountered people throwing stuff at me and spitting on me. I finally decided to hang up riding a bicycle for good when a motorist swerved at me and caused me to dive off the edge of the road into the woods fracturing my wrist, ribs, bruised liver, and I got stuck with a $30,000 medical bill as the driver walked away completely free.

I literally had a karen encounter like that last video. She got downright nasty with me, shoved me and my bike over, and herself, fell over the bike as well while doing so. Called 911 because she got a booboo on her leg. The police showed up. An ambulance showed up. I was questioned, while she was having a self induced panic attack. The officer saw my travel cam footage and my gps for speed acknowledgement. Dismissed me, she became extremely belligerent to the officer and the paramedic because I was given the right to leave. I stayed while she started to assault the officer, and waved as the police car pulled off with her in the back seat. I still see her once and a while around the paths this happened at.

In my home town, we have a council estate (what we call projects in Britain) which borders a sizeable old quarry, and all the dirt bikers and ebikers used to ride down there, because it's out of the way, with mega wide roads, and leads directly to a dirt bike site. The local kids started hanging washing lines across the road at the entrance to the quarry, and seriously hurt a number of young lads, stealing their motorbikes after they'd fallen off when the washing line caught their necks. Thankfully, it's a narrow entrance so the lads were slowing down when they hit the wires, but if they'd been riding much faster they'd have been decapitated. Sadly, one young lad DID get decapitated at a local quarry a few years ago, and the council closed all these old quarries from public use.

He wasn't wrong actually. I dont agree with his confrontational attitude but the trail did apparently prohibit motorized vehicles. E bikes use "electric MOTORS". Nobody said the trail only prohibited combustion motors. Most electric vehicles like that actually use 2 or even 4 electric motors, either 1 for each back wheel, or even 1 for every wheel. Meanwhile combustion vehicles almost exclusively use only one motor. The point is "you should have led with that", is just the woman's way of saying "well if i had realized you were handicapped I wouldn't have said anything about you breaking the rules because I'm embarrassed by your condition and would have just let you get away with it." So yea, it was the handicapped guys fault. He knew the trail prohibited motorized vehicles, and either didn't know or didn't care that his e bike had electric motors. I have no opinion on whether or not the trail should prohibit ebikes, or on whether or not exceptions should be made for the handicap, but as the rules were at the time, he was clearly breaking them. I certainly would not have reacted like that. I probably wouldn't have said anything to the guy. I'm not oblivious and it would have been obvious he was handicapped. That said, the trail did apparently prohibit motorized vehicles. It is a sad reality that not EVERYTHING in the world can be made handicap accessible. Saying its an E bike doesn't change anything about the park rules. E bikes use electric "MOTORS". I highly doubt the rules only specifically prohibit "Motorized vehicles that run on combustible fuel, of a specific size or greater". I have seen many of these tiny motor warriors trying to stick it to the man by using non combustion motors, or even combustion motors that fall under the legal limit requiring registration, insurance, and licensing to operate. None of that has anything to do with trails in a park. The park managers can set whatever rules they like. The rule they set was "no motors". This guy may be handicapped but I bet he can read. He got a sensational over reactions but he did it by breaking the park rules. That's not a hero fighting for the rights of the handicapped, its a anarchist creating clickbait for people who can't see beyond the surface of a situation. And their rules state that a wheelchair or other power-driven mobility devices is allowed any where that foot traffic is allowed. Oh, and the Department of Justice has stated that mobility devices are allowed on any public accommodations (which includes public lands and any private trail that is open to the public, or any other "place of recreation") according to Titles II and III of the Americans with Disabilities Act, but just the tiniest amount of common sense and empathy would have already told you that, assuming you had any. You "could" drive a bus through a playground but it would create an unacceptable safety hazard for the children and parents. Obviously the ability to do something does not in any way make it acceptable, especially when there are rules specifically prohibiting it. Some of the guys riding e-bikes in this video are idiots the way they are riding, regardless of how inappropriate the karens are.

@Lee G except what he's describing *IS* the law. Let's break down exactly what he said bit by bit: "If you have an E-bike that is basically an electric motorcycle" The US Consumer Product Safety Commission defines a motorized bicycle (such as an E-bike, but gas motors are allowed too) as a bike that generates no more then 1HP (750watts) and goes no faster than 20mph. Anything that can go faster than that isn't 'basically' a motorcycle. it *IS* a motorcycle, legally speaking. Cops can impound it if they clock you going faster than 20 and your feet aren't moving. if it's going significantly faster, they can impound it anyway and check what your output is. "And you're travelling at speeds that are similar to normal vehicle speeds" So, if you're operating your out-of-compliance E-bike like a motorcycle. Don't be a dumbass. Cops know you've de-limited the thing when you go whizzing by at traffic speed. Now you won't be worth the trouble if you're following the rules. But if you run a red, or roll up on the sidewalk where that's not allowed, or generally pose a hazard to slower foot/bike traffic, they will bust you, and they'll impound the bike. You should keep that 8kw E-MTB off the bike trails, because that's just asking for trouble.
@DFX2KX
@DFX2KX 2 жыл бұрын
@@andrewnorris5415 Don't think updating the law is gong to help there. They don't have the athority to regulate *off road* vehicles exactly, and the settings inside controllers that disable limiters are intended only for offroad use. didn't stop me from disabling the 15mph top speed in my TSDZ though. And the cops here REALLY, REALLY don't care. The shit I've seen done on pedal-bikes (or done myself TBH, I'm no saint) is worse than most of what's in this video, let alone the E-bikes.

The issue I have with Onyx and Monday is they accelerate very quickly and will go about 50-60 mph but they don’t come with standard safety features like blinkers or good brake lights like the mopeds of the 70s did. They are also made in California where it is DEFINITELY required to have insurance and a motorcycle license to ride them on the street but they advertise them as no license required and sell them to people that have never even ridden a 25 mph moped let alone something that goes twice that fast. They make people think if you can ride a bicycle you can ride their bike but they’re not the same thing. They’re more like an electric motorcycle that just happens to have pedals on it. Half the time the people in their advertisements aren’t even wearing helmets. Great product but very irresponsible advertising in my opinion. I think bikes like that are going to wind up getting some people in trouble or seriously injured. Always look up your state laws before purchasing and don’t buy a bike you aren’t ready for.

They are mopeds that do moped speeds that weigh moped weights and it's a loophole that will be closed soon. Thankfully here in the UK E bikes are heavily restricted in speed but most people de-restrict them and most sellers are willing to sell illegal e bikes. I look forward to the fines being so big it stops. Don't get me wrong I really love e bikes and I want one but they must be restricted to below 30mph and under a certain weight to stop these loophole engineers making mopeds with pedals. It all depends on where you live. Where I live bicycle paths are restricted to pedal bikes. If you’re riding an ebike, you must have the motor turned off and be pedalling the bike. The sad part is that our province considers any motorized vehicle that can reach 38km/h a vehicle that needs to be licensed and insured EXCEPT ebikes. Some moped style ebikes can reach speeds of 70km/h and are designed in a way that makes them almost impossible to pedal for even a short distance - yet they’re still considered bicycles.

The first question I would have asked that guy if I could not walk and was using a 3-wheeler is "what is your first name?" That immediately makes the lashing-out person think "wait a minute - I don't want to give this person my first name because I might be in the wrong and they might report me to staff" If the person refuses to give you their first name, YOU GOT 'EM. @@gratitude8182 It's all about enjoying the ride and ignoring the haters, which thankfully there are fewer of each year as more people start to recognize and understand Ebikes. My wife and I have been riding Ebikes since 2010 when we went on an adventure to Latin America in our RV and people told us not to tow our truck because of the topes, so we bought some Ebikes, very primitive by todays standards and took those to get around the pueblo magico towns that were designed for donkey carts and not our big RV. My wife decided she needed to find something for me to do so she decided that renting Ebikes was the ticket, that led to Ebike sales and that led to me becoming an Ebike mechanic instead of an early retired master builder. A e-bike is a "motorized vehicle" in most (all) States, but there are special regulations that govern and allow them. You cannot put a motor on a bike and then call it "not a motorized vehicle" LOL 😅 In our State of Oregon, some trails do not specifically forbid e-bikes, but many trails allow bicycles but not motorized bicycles. Some trails have actually gone so far as having to explain to violators by actually posting "no e-bikes" but there are people who still violate these regulations. And the problem is the high powered heavy e-bikes/electric motorcycles really do put walking people in danger.

And it won't be in our favor as riders of electric bicycles I'm expecting things to start getting stricter and more similar to how they are in Europe Why do we need a higher top speed a throttle and more power if Europeans can get by without them? Because we don't have the bicycle infrastructure that Europe does and have to stay safe against clueless drivers, as protected lanes are incredibly rare. Europeans I've met tend to comment that they thought their bike access sucked and then realized there's a whole new level of awful they didn't even imagine once they traveled here I mean, if the federal government wants to include actual bike infrastructure (as opposed to paint) in their future infrastructure plans then great. By all means make biking safer. But if the issues with Sur-ron and RCR style bikes reaches a head any legislative reaction will likely hurt the future of eco-friendly electric transport and make ebike riders less safe on the street.

@@AgentAlmost for myself, I live in the backwoods part of Arkansas, we have no bike infrastructure and I'm ok with that, the 8 miles I travel to work is nearly a straight line and is great for biking, due to health issues however, I opted to upgrade my bike to an ebike, I put a 1000w bbshd motor on it, technically a little above legal power wise, but the only times I've ever used that power is when I'm being chased by dogs, otherwise I keep it in PA 2 and cruise between 17 to 19mph, which is plenty fast enough, thankfully so far the cars I encounter give me plenty of space, and I hug the white, or if needed just get off the road for large trucks, works pretty well here, but when I see people in videos using ebikes that are on par with motorcycles and claiming they are ebikes, I can't help but feel it will sooner or later hurt the bike community via legislation

That last one was painful to watch, though I would have pulled out my phone and called the police. I don't have many encounters with karens, though there was one guy who said something as I passed his house, and I stopped to have a conversation. Turns out his problem was other kinds of bike riding past his house at 30mph on the sidewalk, and even though I was doing my usual 12mph-ish for sidewalks, he thought I was one of them. Sidewalks are 100% legal for bicycles and class 1 or 2 e-bikes in our state, and with a very un-friendly infrastructure for bikes here, you often don't have a choice. My quick answer to anyone who calls out "Non-motorized vehicles!" is to just tap the handlebars and say "Exempt", and keep on riding. If someone is ignorant, you really don't want to engage them anyways. But, there is a balance. If you are going full send on mixed use trails and ignoring common sense, then people will come against you, and they will be right. I was recently on a group ride where a police vehicle passed us driving on the wrong side of the road, pulled in front of the group, and hit his brakes. Very stupid and dangerous of the officer. He ordered us to ride to an area up the road, and spent 15 minutes on the phone with his supervisor trying to find something to charge us with. He couldn't, so he checked every bike and found the one Sur Ron without pedals, and gave him a written warning because "I have to find something to justify my stopping you". Yes, that's what the officer said. Never mind we were on a public road which was open to motorized and non-motorized vehicles, and riding in an orderly fashion below the speed limit. It pains me that this word continues to grow more divided and hostile and selfish as the days go by.

There is another way of dealing with Karens and -- what? Kyles? -- which I've used for 40 years to great effect. It requres iron self-control, but always leaves the Karen bewildered and baffled. When confronted with one of these enraged busybodies, simply face her/him squarely, and stare into her/his eyes as though you do not understand whichever language she/he is speaking. Over time I found that I could punctuate my passivity with a very subtle inclination of the head with slight elevation of one eyebrow, but nothing more. Do not flinch or smirk, just stare, and stare for as long as it takes for her/him to wither up and go away. It carries the advantage that you give her/him no pretext to physically attack. This technique is especially good if you have a young child with you. I did this about 25 years ago when a slightly drunk and sour-looking Karen was yelling at my 7 year old son for running around a motel parking lot letting off steam after a long car ride. I talked with him afterward about the value of always maintaining self-control and decorum, and now, at the age of 33, he is a supremely calm and confident man.

This should be the attitude everyone has here. Unfortunately this seems like an ebike echo chamber channel. Honestly these things are motorized bikes masquerading as pedal bikes, the laws are really relaxed when these happen to be throttled by pedals and not a lever. Until regulations catch up it's in all riders interests to keep passing speeds respectful and remain visible. Have to remember we are pattern-trained to expect a bike shaped object to only move a certain speed, your ebike passing ass is gonna be a highly invisible object to most people who clock you from a distance.

I found this channel via your UBCO review. This video popped up as recommended one and I wanted to add some... discussion here. In the USA, e-bikes, especially e-MTBs, have vastly different access abilities on public land vs. on roads. There is a fundamental difference between land managed (or owned) by a transportation entity (DOT, county road, city public works) and one managed (of owned) by a recreation entity (DNR/DCR, county parks, city parks). This can result in a lot of issues for those that bring e-bikes (and especially e-MTBs) onto trails. What doesn't help is e-bike advocates pushing the idea that the federal definitions of an e-bike mean that they can go anywhere a 100% human powered bike can. In fact, many states (MA being one) and many municipalities ban motorized (yes, e-bikes have a motor) traffic of any kind on non-transportation defined trails and roadways. Typically, this includes natural surface singletrack, some wider natural surface trails and, in a few instances, paved trails. But the larger point here is that due to the USA's federated system and land management divisions, a person can't say, "Federal statue is this, so that means this or that is legal." Understanding local laws (which, again, can be different one town or property to the next) is important for e-bike riders. Most of the people yelling at e-bike riders you show in this video are jackwagons, true, but when to comes to e-bikes on recreational trails, they may not be wrong as far legality. In other videos you've mentioned that "e-bikes are allowed anywhere a normal bike is allowed" and that is only true of transportation defined roadways. Get off those onto recreational trails and the legality gets very complicated very fast. As an example of this, I live in a state with very clear, fairly liberal, e-bike rules with most land managers following the state guidance. But if my trail club got a class 2 or class 3 or that UBCO for trail work/tool carrying, we would have to go to every land manager and get a special allowance. My plea to all e-bike advocates, owners, curious individuals is this: understand the instant you cross off the right-of-way line of a road, you may not have legal access. Do your research and don't assume anything. If you can't find the information online, call or email that land manager and ask.

Bingo. Motor's a Motor, and an E-bike will tear up a trail just as easily as a gasbike will. Local city doesn' allow E-bikes on the gravel trails for that reason. But we can still use bike lanes (and even sidewalks provided we're not jerks about it).

@DFX2KX
@DFX2KX 2 жыл бұрын
@@NATESOR with regard to effects on the trail, that distinction is valid. up to a point, a class 2 and 3 ebike can put down 1hp and have throttles. The issue comes with telling said ebikes apart from each other. other than the multi-KW Hub motors and absolutely huge mid drives (like the 3kw Cyclones) it's pretty hard to tell them apart. People who ride these vehicles often have little to no understanding of traffic laws, they also think that going over 40 kph on a pedestrian sidewalk is a perfectly normal way to drive and that making sounds to warn people around them is somehow uncool. I don't care if the unfortunate e-thrill-seeker turns himself into thin paste, but it certainly concerns me when someone can fly into me at 40 kph or more on a supposedly safe pedestrian sidewalk. I really wish that lazy law turned it's eyes on them for I love being alive, you know. It doesn't make sense to views them as analog bikes or motor vehicles. I can think of some trails a total motor ban would make sense, and plenty where ebikes wouldn't pose a problem at all. Or maybe certain trails could be off limits to certain classes of ebikes or be throttle free? Shoehorning them into existing regulations is bound to cause confusion.

Anyone who has cycled on a bike path with kids and had an idiot on an ebike race past them knows that this is a tremendous safety issue, and has little to do with being a Karen. To be clear, I'm talking about the difference between ebikes, which are a motorized vehicle, and peddle assisted bikes, in which the motor only assists you when peddling. I don't think I have ever encountered a cyclist being outrageous who was on a peddle assisted bike. To be clear, excessive speeds by spandex wearing morons, as in the first example in this video, is just as big of a safety issue. I'd yell at her to slow down too. But the affordance to go 20mph+ without pedaling means you get moronic teens whipping around blind corners and weaving. Every time I'm commuting with my kids I worry about this. I just hate that as an active transport user, I now have to worry about unsafe vehicles in what used to be the only safe place to have my kids bike. To be clear, cycling has been my family's ONLY means of transportation for nearly a decade. I'm not talking about just pleasure riding. I'm talking about taking my kids to school or to the shops. I should be able to do that, and use the paths my council built for this purpose, without worrying about motorized vehicles running us over or off the path.

"You should've led with that". Yeah, because I enjoy being handicapped so much I want it to be the topic I start every conversation with. I went fishing with my dad at a park and the ranger came around saying "you cant ride bikes here". Due to having only one knee/needing crutches to walk it's easier for me to use my one good leg to sit on a bike(not electric) and hold it up pedaling in low gear vs walking on crutches in soft dirt. I tried to explain this but the guy basically said that bikes might scare the horses.
