I googled that and found the reference to Deep Space Nine - a Star Trek series I never got into. But it is so true.

Very much appreciate the recommendations "outside of genre". I'd be happy to see this become a regular feature. Finding conscientious reviewers who provide genuinely useful info with their recommendations is essential and one of the bigger challenges when it comes to reliably finding good reads. I'm thrilled to have more recommendations from such reviewer. Regardless of genre.

I love June Hur books! I have read all 3 and can’t wait for the next one. She does such a good job putting us in the historical world and it so different from my life experience that it does feel like fantasy. And she manages to make the women strong and capable even if the their world doesn’t want them to be. I started Scythe last month and then put it down because I was traveling. So I am going to pick it back up next week. You reminded me of my favorite parts and why I want to get back to it.

There is a sequel to Parable of the Sower called Parable of the Talents which is also good. There is a lot of historical fiction that takes place not in Europe and not involving WW2. Books set in the US, Asia and the list goes on. I’m going to check out Scythe.

Yes, more of this please. I don’t read a lot of strict fantasy or science fiction, but I do enjoy books that are sff-adjacent. The speculative, dystopian end of the genre is where I find my most hits. The absolute worst for me is anything where they go on a quest. That’s a snoozefest.

Oh I love The Downstairs Girl. Definitely have to pick up another book by the author soon. And so great you brought up Scythe, I've seen it sitting on your shelf but never saw you talk about it. Haven't gotten to the third instalment yet because I have heard not so good things about it, but I might give it another go now :) overall, great recommendations

The author has two other books that are great also. They are older than The Red Palace, so they might be available now. I am in the US and had trouble getting my hands on The Red Palace. I read almost exclusively through my library. So I wonder if The Red Palace was under bought or marketed. Good luck finding a June Hur book. I think she is worth the effort in finding her books.

witch hat for all 11 it's seventy quid on uk amazon .... the ebook one.....i'm not going to go to forbidden planet to see if they have it, 'cause the last time i went. i burnt thru £137 and walked away with 12 mangas [fuck the 3 for the price of 2], a comic for 99p, 2 t shirts and 'a taste of tea' ..... 'smattering of tea' ..... 'a tempest of tea' in hardback for 15 quid ...haven't read it yet, just tell me if it's good / not. the only reason i haven't read it yet is because of the videos that yubtub keep on suggesting..... my 'i'll read this book later' is bigger than my actual book collection
