I think best starter is either medic or handler, really comfy for beginner.

Handler just makes it harder to get used to the game later. Without knowing it you rely on the dog way to much.

In the character screen. Icons in the top left will appear when buffed. If you hover over the icons they will list the effects

Bulwark meaning a defensive wall.

Found a ring what gives a stack of bulwark/summon. The dog, engineer's turret if deployed, the summoners summons and some weapon mods act also as summons. You can have a lot of stacks.
