Linux Users Beware !! Microsoft Gaining More Control Of Your Hardware
A quick video that covers the scam known as Microsoft Pluton, that is already embedded in the AMD 6000 series chip and what it means for users who don't want to use windows.
You will no longer be able to install Linux with Pluton enabled unless the Microsoft 3rd-party UEFI Certificate is enabled in your UEFI Firmware.
Let me know what you think in the comments below.

So Microsoft eliminates dual booting Windows. Then I won't be booting Windows. The few Windows-only utilities I use either run under Wine/Proton, or on a Windows 10 VM. I won't buy a computer that won't run other OSes.

I've been worried by this thing after knew that only Microsoft that can sign the other OS to boot in Secure Boot and I've been imagined the worst case scenario when Microsoft stop signing other OS'es and lock the UEFI so the users can't use other OS beside Windows. And one thing, if a big tech companies talking about security, they not talking about the security to protect the users, but they talking about the security of their wallet so they can make more money from their products.

It’s almost as if most Linux tinker practitioners (myself included) are being forced to learn how to modify hardware, develop and program apps(software) plus learning Ai(artificial intelligence) to get around or transcend these obstacles. In the meantime, it’d be great if arm-chips and motherboards could be further developed before most of us are cornered into using a steam deck with an android tablet and a Logitech mouse and keyboard as a laptop substitute.

Running games on Linux and many Windows applications on Linux runs much more smoother than it does on Windows, because Linux doesn't have an application (which can't be disabled) called Microsoft Defender running in the background eating up all of your CPU usage. Not to also mention, Linux doesn't reserve so much memory usage, where as Windows takes a huge chunk of it. What does Windows use it for? Nothing at all, it's just... there lol It's frightening to think that Microsoft wants control over our PC hardware the same way as they do with their video game consoles, we've already struggled tooth and nail trying to undo all the security in Nintendo's consoles using software exploits and payloads, and even with those and having hacked our own devices, they even have servers that verify certificates and stuff in where their servers have Access Control Lists that block devices that have been modded, it's really ridiculous, because that hardware security in itself hinders preservation and installation of other OSs. Imagine a future with Microsoft themselves forcing us onto an OS that limits what you're able to do, it would leave us in a time bubble in where we have to hack our own devices in order to get its full potential, where we risk getting blocked from using their online services, just because of modifications to launch a Linux distro. And imagine Microsoft Defender being weaponised to detect firmware modifications, it would be a complete disaster for the PC industry, everyone would be frustrated.

You are the only KZbinr that I know of that is talking about this. I have been using Linux for 15 years and it is been various levels of complicated and annoying dealing with these computer companies that are in cahoots with Microsoft trying to prevent Linux from being installed. I bought a brand new Acer Predator 3000 Orion gaming PC and it was impossible. Yes I know that this computer is not the newest but it was new to me. I got out of Walmart 2 weeks ago. Every time I tried to install Linux I got the blue screen of death which I thought was a thing of the past since I havent seen it in about 10 years. Well now that I think about it I haven't bought a new computer in 10 years. When Windows 8 came out I said I am never going to buy a new computer again and I would go to pawn shops and buy old computers because they were easier to install Linux on. Linux is important to me for security purposes. Back in 2007 I lost a lot of very valuable data due to a worm that shouldn't have happened because I was actually running a virus scan when the attack destroyed everything. Windows is not designed to be secure and I don't give a damn how many videos say so or products that say it is there to secure anything it's a lie. I actually am a reseller for two major software companies that I won't name and their software is absolute garbage. I can't even tell customers with a straight face that it is going to work. All of these softwares are just designed to give people a false sense of security. It is so easy to circumvent it but obviously I can't tell the average user that. The only way to go is Linux if you want to have even a modicum of security of your data

Microsoft loves Linux and open source so much, the only way to use Linux is by starting up malicious software, running Windows Chains for Linux and hope nobody figures out that's the opposite of privacy, security and freedom. Like an American asking the Soviets for permission to sing the national anthem during the 1980s.

Write over whatever partition you put Windows on, once I did, I noticed a difference in performance and memory. Just like when I stopped dual booting, Linux finally got comfortable. And sometimes I'll just keep a live iso on a brand new USB with OS flashed on it and just keep computer on until I notice a slowdown, then reboot back into iso. And do an OEM install if you can. Word of advice, if you buy a laptop and your main purpose is strictly to use Linux, don't even look at Windows go to bios VERY first time you boot up, enable fastboot, disable, or hide tpm, go to security to disable secure boot as make sure that enable boot from USB is enabled. This is on my HP and ASUS as well anyway.

What I think of Microsoft Pluton is that if it is mandatory in Windows 12 or future updates of Windows 11, it would be giving way to Authoritarianism on the part of Microsoft, it is unlikely that they want to impose on us What to do and what not to do with our PC , is a Nice DRM with Trojan Horse included that will know everything about you. Pluton goes beyond letting you install other OSes on your preferred Platform, it's a remote permissions chip that takes only actions that Microsoft Security Cloud deems "safe." It is thought that Microsoft can know if you are running Pirated Software on your PC and block it, it should not be allowed to use this chip (send samples) when you want to Install Windows, since it violates all the privacy and freedom of the user. It sounds paranoid but that little chip is very dangerous.

The Linux community thought that UEFI would take them out, but there was a work around. We'll see. Maybe even the company making the Raspberry Pie processor might step in and step up their game to help us out, who knows. I REALLY don't think it's anything to get too worried about just yet.

Hey eBuzz, it might be unnecessary or rude of me to ask, but your thumbnail titles are extremely similar to DT. They are very easy to read and I like that, but unless you want people to be confused and mistake your videos with DTs, I'd suggest you change the color of those thumbnail titles, to a color or 2-3 colorset that is characteristic to your channel. I know yellow was a quite bright color but at least it was something characcteristic to yr channel. I suggest some nice combination of a different yellow tint(for text) and a teal maybe(for text background)? the purple gets so confusing with DT. But of course, do as you believe to be the best for your channel, I am just a guy on the internet ofc :)

Well my colors on the channel went from yellow and black, to purple and white so that's why my thumbnails changed, I was going along with the aesthetics of the logo I was using. Why is that? Sometimes you don't have a choice in which OS you use (as in a work PC) or software to use on it.

I believe in the beginning it will be able to be disabled, but I believe Microsoft's going to make it mandatory in the name of "security". The same way that Apple stopping right to repair people from being able to get parts and hardware to fix their devices in the name of "safety and security"

I will be fair I just find that video to be really conspiritional. That doesn't mean you don't need to keep an eye onto Microsoft. So what Pluton is is what Microsoft describes on that part it doesn't change. About preventing Linux from booting, the only articles about that are mostly derived from the post on phoronix citing another person which claims that he wasn't able to boot Linux on it's laptop with Microsoft Pluton BECAUSE OF LENOVO UEFI. So for this one don't blame Microsoft. However, as Microsoft business is also selling user data, having one of their chip inside my computer is a no go for me. That doesn't mean it microsoft collects data with this chip but just that I don't trust them enough for that. Also, for the most part Microsoft Pluton is something Microsoft thought in 2020, and as now TPM2.0 is already their implemented by almost all processor vendors, so why would Intel or AMD want to have microsoft mess in their business. And if you look more closely at their article, they stipulate "Chip-to-cloud" and Azure a lot of time. So I think their target is not the global consummer as it is just not in a good place in the industry to do so but for Windows Servers (which run windows so in this case the just really don't care about linux which is normal) and to provide to those server more security measures in order to prevent any attacker to be able to exploit their system, which can cost a lot for giant companies. So that's it all. Microsoft trying to make their security measures processors, and Lenovo failing to make a good UEFI while using there processor. And quick reminder, Linux can also be improved by secure boot, the kernel already support it. The problem is with the motherboard vendor (as they are the one making their UEFI) because they need to install the required CA certificate. Most user are using windows so yes Microsoft CA certificate is shipped by default. But then comes Linux or should I say "GNU/Linux"s, or Redhat (Fedora, CentOs, ...), Canonical (Ubuntu, and all derived OSs), Debian, Arch, Gentoo, Linux from Scratch, System76, etc... And there is the trouble it is not "Linux" it is all those distributions which have their system. So some manufacturer have added Canonical CA certificate, but most don't because if they start to do that, people will be "but what about XXXX" which make the process a pain in the *** and makes it more risky of a private CA key being leaked, reducing the overall security, and that's not even speaking about source base distro like gentoo where you could not have a out of the box experience by default with secure boot as you should compile your kernel by yourself, so you should make your own key as a public private key is as useless as no secure boot at all. Also, one of the major issue with secure boot currently on linux is our old favorite GPU manufacture Nvidia. They start to work with Linux at least, but for the moment if you want to use Nvidia under Linux you need to use their proprietary kernel module, which should be signed by the same private key used to sign your kernel.... But as it is proprietary I'm not even sure it is possible..

That's a lot of good information thank you for sharing. I do have to disagree with you about Nvidia and their proprietary kernel, Nvidia went open source some months ago.
@HinaraT
@HinaraT 2 жыл бұрын
@@eBuzzCentral I know that but the problem is that it is currently badly implemented into the linux ecosystem for the moment. For example, the last version of LTS Ubuntu is 22.04, released before NVidia open source their driver, meaning that for people who work only on LTS releases of Ubuntu they will need to wait April 2024 before having access to those drivers. Also Nvidia partially open source them, for example the opensource kernel driver readme state "The open-gpu-kernel-modules can be used on any Turing or later GPU (see the table below)" They also mention some other version which might work with more recent version, but only as alpha. Also their utilities like the nvidia GUI is still not open source. And about the kernel driver, most of them are directly in the kernel repository as it is easier to manage to fix them directly when doing some internal refactoring, than having them outside. However nvidia kernel driver do not match linux style so they need to be rewrite to match the kernel code style, and also there is the question about having duplicate kernel driver if nvidia drivers made into it as there is already nouveau which is the reversed engineer driver for the nvidia software. So for now, it is in a complicated state where most distribution which handle Nvidia graphic cards use the proprietary driver, and the other one do rely on the "nouveau", leaving those open source kernel driver not really used that much for the moment. But at least they start to finally open source them and also to move in the same direction as everyone, (look for EGLStream and GBM, where Nvidia did make things more difficult by having a different mechanism than everyone else). But I would say almost same as Microsoft (without the privacy issue), stay alert, but for now they seems to go in the right direction.

It's literally just a CPU integrated TPM that does not rely on motherboard RAM to run (cutting down on Spectre like attacks!) but the CPU own Cache and unlike a board mounted TPM can not be physically hacked Could Microsoft use it to do bad stuff sure but I doubt AMD will let it be exploited and harm their Reputation btw Intel designed a tweaked version with Microsoft too work on their Lake Series X86 chips

Microsoft won't be able to completely lock down CPUs due to the lawsuit over secure boot, but they'll surely try to make it as inconvenient as possible to leave the windows ecosystem.

This is security for the botnet, not security for the users, windows is otherwise a very insecure OS. Microsoft don't want hackers, or regular users to acquire control of the computers they remote control using Windows.

If we got Linux running on Apple M1, UEFI, and other obscure platforms then I don't see it as being too far off to be taking advantage of this hardware in a few years. I note the video says there is the ability to update firmware on the chip, through Windows Update at least. What if we found a way to "jail-break" this process somehow by spoofing a key perhaps, in order to take advantage of the hardware itself? This might be something the Coreboot team would be interested in, but perhaps it would allow Linux to secure itself from memory overruns (even better), or advance things like Disk Encryption or 2FA. Protection from the "evil nanny" situation would be a plus on laptops. While I am not a systems engineer (yet), I could see this as plausible if people give it enough time. Users disabling Intel Management Engine are an example to follow; I see this Pluton thing being an inconvenience at most and a possible strength in the future, if we can get user keys into it.
