Welcome to the club. I've been TIG welding since I was 16. I'm 61 now. I like to tell people that all other types of Welding are industrial processes but TIG Welding is an art form. There are tremendous resources for TIG welding information on KZbin. Welding tips and tricks and This Old Tony are fabulous just to name two but there are many more. But nothing beats having someone over your shoulder saying "more pedal, more pedal, more pedal, dip, move, dip, move, back off, back off, back off, damn you suck at this :)". TIG Welding is also great therapy. When you are focused completely on a pool of molten metal 1/4 inch in diameter the rest of the world just goes away. Have fun with it!

I've had a tig for many years and started my son with tig. When he was 11 or 12 we went to a Hobart Demonstration. The Hobart guy set up 2 pieces of thin aluminum in a tent configuration snd gave my son a few basic instructions. We both expected him to blow holes through the weld. He laid down a near perfect weld. The Hobart guy was amazed as was I. Some people have a natural knack for things.

Mike Rowe called, "Having thr chip." Said he doesn't have it, but his dad did. I was lucky enough to be born with it, I guess - just doing what seems to come natural to me. I try to teach my son everything I know, but can never seem to find enough time for it all.

You gotta like a guy that has as a logo on his truck, a man smacking on a anvil. Hard to imagine when I learned to tig, the machine size was 3ft x 3ft by 5 foot tall, And Mig was yet to be taught, and this was a Government School CETA Program. Tho I never really did it for a living, became a communications software tech for 35 years, it was nice to know I could weld anything, came in handy alot. What the school actually taught me was, there was not anything I could not learn if I applied myself. That lesson was priceless. I have taught alot of people how to get started welding, and thats also a nice feeling.

I inherited by father's Miller 300DX TIg machine. He never used it. I didn't know anything about any welding, but I asked for it because i wanted to learn so that I could weld a bicycle frame. It was very frustrating having no welding experience, but I learned. My first project was welding a cart for it and the bottle. It has back wheels from a wheelchair, front castors from another cart, a bottle storage restraint and rod storage tubes and a place to park the torch and wrap the cables. Even has a parking brake. Painted it Miller Blue. lol.

We are required to wear long sleeves at work if we are welding or in the welding booth no matter what but I still use spf 50+ UVA, UVB protection for my face and neck because I am normally not the one welding so I don't have a hood. Welding is fun but it's also important to try and stay safe

When I welded in a shop professionally, it was me and one other guy. We got a job in the shop one day that required us to weld for almost 8 hours straight. So we put up a wall between us and went to work. The next day I had a sun burn on the back of my neck that was the worst I'd ever had. But the other guy did not. Turns out the flash was bouncing off the ceiling which was at an angle, up over the wall to my side. That's the day I learned how damaging arc flash can be.

I am super sensitive to sunburn. I was wearing a short sleeve shirt with some long gloves. But a tiny bit of skin on the inside of my elbow was not covered. Even with just an hour of practicing (stick) welding, i already got a bit of sunburn right at that spot. The radiation is intense.

They also make a magnifying lens that snaps into the window of the welding hood. For people who need glasses it is a game changer because good sight is absolutely paramount for any process especially TIG. It's called a cheater lense if your interested. Also check out a "TIG Finger". Its a heat resistant material that slips over your finger and allows to prop and slide on red hot surfaces, also a game changer

I have been watching your videos for a couple months. First let me say Thank you for putting truly educational and useful content out there for the world to see. Second, this is a rare video of yours I can Actually give some insight on. Lol TIG is my absolute favorite welding process. Each one has its place. But once you get confidant with TIG you will grab it whenever you can. Its cleaner, quieter, and you have better control. It looks like you have an good teacher there. I dont have to tell you to cherish him. As i am sure others have pointed out. WEAR SLEEVES!!!!! I cannot stress this enough. The UV radiation from TIG is very high. Full leathers is not necessary, a simple cotton longsleeve shirt is all you need. Lastly, once you get comfortable with carbon and stainless steel give aluminum a go. About 1/3 of what you learned on steel is out the window. Lol Enjoy and “Keep up the good work”

I learned oxy/acet welding more years ago than you are old. Later I bought a buzbox stick welder. I've had an occasion to get back into welding. It seems everything and everyone is using MIG. Many years ago I took a class in welding and the instructor told us not to spend too much time on MIG welding because it was not allowed in any construction situation--not even walk way railings. Any way I bought a MIG welder and rented a bottle of gas. So then I had to rent 3 bottles of gas--about that time something happened at the manufacturer of acetylene and we couldn't get bottles refilled. After that, the price went up so much that I switched my oxy/acet to oxy/PROPANE. Propane is not a very good substitute for acetylene. I found that foreign made combination welders ( stick, tig, plasma cutting) are really cheap and for do it yourselfers, work quite well. Now I want to try my TIG welder, but I have to get another tank of a different gas. Thought I'd get a small tank to start with ----$300 ---$200 for a lease and $100 for gas. I guess I'll forgo adding another mode of welding to my reportage.

Just a little bit of a safety-tip - Don´t grind the tungsten "against" the belt, if the tungsten were to catch the band it's gonna end up in your hand/wrist in best case scenario. Turn it 180 degrees and hold it facing down towards the floor - you´ll still get the scratches on the tungsten in the right direction, but less dangerous :) Thanks for all the great content

Who says you can't teach an old dog new tricks? A person with the philosophy that you should only stop continuing to learn when you die is exactly the sort of person who can do anything they put their mind to. Exactly the sort of person that CAN be a master of all trades and jack of none rather than the usual way around. All that separates a man like this from mastering every skill his heart desires to master is simply the time in his life to do it all. Here's hoping this man has several decades left to learn and teach.

We need to clarify the word welder.I have three welders I no longer call myself a welder although I've been doing it for over 40 years the difference is the guy down the street drops his mask at 7 and doesn't raise it till 5 he's a welder his beads are 150 ft long.

i, like you, welded for over forty years {gas, mig and stick) before buying my first tig welder.i also have friends who weld professionally some are true artists with tig and i leaned on them heavily. i bought a tig machine when i retired as a present to myself. its been about 9 years now and i find myself reaching for the tig every chance i get. i consider myself passable in the tig dept and i'm sure you will get there. its all about seat time.check out some of the youtube welders like jody collier. you can learn i lot from them.

Hey Scott! I remembered watching a video of Nate on EC2 where he mentioned that you read... like a lot... and he also mentioned that you read some Science Fiction. Have you heard of Artemis? Its from Andy Weir, same author of The Martian. So... there is welding, on low gravity, on the Moon! And since it's from Weir, it's very well grounded in physics. After listening to the review of the Empire of the Summer Moon, I'm actually not very confident in recommending a "light" book as Artemis, but you know... If you want some light reading... might be worth to check it (or wait for the movie)

I thought welding wouldn't be worse than the radiation from the sun. I was wrong, the UV radiation is surprisingly intense. Didn't get a bad burn, but just enough to notice it the next day.

Some free advice: get Nate a zoom lens and variable ND filter on it for shots of your welding puddle. Zoom lens keeps him back from sparks and fumes. ND lets us see your weld. Nate should NEVER look at the arc unless through the LCD or a filter (or special glasses for welding). That UV is worse than the arc. I have to ask: I didn't think there was a pedal for that model welder. Can you provide link..oh..I found it ... Fronius Foot Pedal: 4,046,110 guess they updated info to work with 210 model... maybe tell them their website is ... confusing? Good luck TIGing!

Get rid of that foot pedal and you'll get rid of some variables. Then it's just a matter of picking the right amperage and laying down some wire.

Hey not sure if you know about not using chlorinated brake cleaner when welding but its especially important when using tig as its more likely to happen then with mig or tig. If you dont know about it, if you use chlorinated brake cleaner to clean up metal before welding and there is any left, when you weld it produces phosgene gas. Super deadly.

Thank you!!! I did happen to know that and I have mentioned it on the channel I think but I intend to make sure that I make a point of bringing that to everyone’s attention. Argon and chlorine at temperatures over 2000° create phosgene gas. You probably will not make it out of your shop alive. I really appreciate you pointing this out for us!

@@essentialcraftsman it's especially bad with tig as it's the uv light coming from the arc that does it, and the absence of smoke makes the light more intense.
