I haven't been welding long, but when Antonio put the screwdriver in the fence at 6:23 to steady his off hand. Something in my mind just clicked and was like "I have been in the same position and been super uncomfortable. That is so easy."

The way that hinge is designed really does call for thrust bearings - but I think getting some that would fit on that hinge with the limited clearance might have been difficult.

I’m not a craftsman or even “handy”. I have built several backyard fences and gates out of wood, however. As I’m in my 70’s now, I look back on those gate engineering battles with gravity and realize just how overmatched I was. Cables, turnbuckles, braces, and you name it. Gravity and time always eventually won. My only satisfaction was that we eventually moved.

I love how Antonio (my middle name, btw. Dante Antonio) used his big ol screwdriver as a baby Burke bar to wedge the mesh up against the frame as he tack welded it. Just a natural thing for him to do, no second thought or hesitation. Another fine example of the theme of this video, his experience and years of knowledge and skill showing through in small ways that go unobserved by those who don’t care to learn.

I used to be a software engineer, now I'm an executive - it's amazing how my hobbies (car restoration, building stuff, machining, electronics hardware design etc) have become very useful in my actual work..... I think the modern world put way to much emphasis on specialization - in my case understanding all aspects of the business plus having a bunch of very manual & physical hobbies has been hugely beneficial.

Years ago I was working at Airbus in Toulouse (design office) and my boss took a couple of new college hires to a tour of the stockroom at the local equivalent of Grainger/Motion Industries. Just so they’d know what was available to them. Similarly, he had a huge wall to which he glued samples of all sorts of hardware and tools. Far better than a load of ring-binders with catalogs that you only looked at if you knew they contained what you were looking-for.

When Nate first said shed, I was thinking a small, wooden structure. As in a Garden shed etc. Not sure if that's just me or, it's a result of a difference between the two versions of a (dis)similar language. 🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧

I thought the same as you did Robert and I’ve lived my whole life (so far) in the US. I figure an elk shed was like a duck blind or a deer stand, a structure where a hunter could hide while waiting for an elk to wander by. Growing up on the east coast decades ago it was rare to see wild life other than squirrels, chipmunks, garter snakes and box turtles. Now I live maybe 400 meters from US route 1 and see deer in my backyard fairly often.

My first thought for the issue was something like a piece of angle and a tow ball at the heel of the hinge. Designed to take load and friction wear, adjustable and replaceable. You see the potential In the materials around you.
@JRUNd
@JRUNd 3 жыл бұрын
@@anttiroppola4414 it makes me wonder if those hinges has a ball bearing sitting inside the tube to handle heavy load and less frictions during operation. If those hinges rated maybe 700 lb each it shouldn't be an issue if he install 6 hinges for that amount of weights. The assisted cable is really brilliant idea.

I used 3 in pipe inside of six inch square tube setting on a Volkswagen stub axle with a tapered bearing. The same at the top. The stub axle was welded to a square plate of steel that drop down inside the square tubing and captured the steel pipe. nicely burn slots in the square tubing allow 1 inch bolt to screw into the steel pipe and swivel 90 degrees outside of the square tubing. you can bolt any gate to it you want and encourage the children and adults stand on the very end and ride it. For 30 years. and actually the coolest part about it is a 6 inch tubing welded to a 12 inch piece of tubing that ran underneath my driveway to another gate that was connected to the first gate with a tie rod and a bell crank so one gate control the other gate. Magic!

I loved hearing Nate tell his son to carry the antler. I coach youth bowlers and one of the things I try to do keeps the parents (usually the dads) from doing the changes that occasionally have to be done on the scoring console. I want the kids to take care of putting a blind score in if their teammate doesn’t show up. Most of the parents get it once I explain it but some still just want to do it rather than have it take a bit longer because I’m walking one of the kids through how it’s done.

The software engineering comment fit. I've been a video game programmer for 21 years. In video games there is often dedicated programmers for AI, Physics, Graphics, Gameplay, UI, etc. I've worked at places who had no one dedicated to those areas, so I was lucky enough to do them all. Though I'm not really a master of any of those areas, I have experience in all of them and can get whatever needs to be done for the job. At 73, I can confirm there is much value in approaching problems with the thought, "How can I do that?" instead of, "Who can do that for me?" I learned so much when I was younger by simply volunteering to help on job sites, or just sitting and watching people work; and I'm still doing that. I just watched the La-Z-Boy repairman work on my recliner (still under an extended warranty). I could have figured it out, but there is real value in simply paying attention to what is going on in the world around you.

Adding to my previous comment: last week I went and "fixed" a couple of doors at home that had this same problem. The correct way to do it would be replacing the hinges but as I didn't have them and I'll have to look for them, I used some whashes. They worked so, although with a different method, thanks for the inspiration. On the other hand, I was thinking about your solution and I think I might have found a little problem with your solution: That cable will tend to stretch. I guess it might not be too much (it's not a long piece of it) so it will keep doing its job for a long time, but it will stretch. Other than that, thanks for the inspiration.
