This was the first performance I ever recorded on VHS. My fingers ready for the two buttons on the VCR. I played it endlessly, learnt every word as every 13 year old is wont to.

This is an Old Grey Whistle Test special ("Rock around The Clock", running through the evening and night until 7am) broadcast on Saturday September 20th 1986 on BBC2. These two were in the band's first set at 8:45pm.

I remember watching this when it was first broadcast. I'm pretty sure it was near the end of the show. Sitting poised with fingers over the record button. I miss real Bunnymen of this time. I still love the older stuff and I'm always pleased when there's new Bunnymen material, but for some time it's seemed like they/ perhaps Mcculloch isn't/ arent really trying anymore. There aren't the really clever lyrics we used to get, Will Sergents playing still seems exciting, but when I saw them possibly 3/4 years ago, they seemed like a tribute act. It's really sad as the excitement of the old is still there, but it feels less vital or "real" now. Obviously, this could at least in part be down to me getting older, too. Thanks for uploading

I played this every day between the broadcast and when the album came out almost a year later, I don't think the Game on record was anywhere near as good as I thought it was going to be, although still very good.

Think these performances pre-date the studio versions. Definitely remember seeing (and recording) this at the time and being blown away. The album tracks were slightly disappointing after this! They also did a cover of Velvet's Run Run Run at the end which was fab. :)

Peak Bunnymen - at their imperial best. What a tight band they were - lots of glances and nods as they instinctively knew where their music was going. Used to love Lips Like Sugar at their gigs - Ian often wandering off into streams of consciousness mutterings, the band matching his mood and that of the audience superbly, sometimes stretching the song to almost 10 minutes of peaks and troughs before the majestic finale. Ian often clutching a can of beer and a cigarette under a solitary spotlight. Great memories of a band who should have been massive. For those who never saw them - Ian would often wear the coat for the whole gig, and never so much as a bead of sweat on his face.

Will put that guitar up on eBay under his Seargeant Fuzz moniker in about 2003, I bid...not enough , damn !
@AllenManor3 жыл бұрын
I interviewed Will years ago right when the Bunnymen were reforming. I actually asked him about "that black guitar" and he was incredibly dismissive of it (but then again, he seems to be dismissive about everything). He said that the company, Bond, sent him a guitar for free out of the blue in the hopes that he would play it live and give them some exposure. He was impressed at how space-age it was (made of carbon fiber with a digital readout) but that he could never get it to work right. He said he sent it back "loads of times" for them to fix it and he said it never did work right so he gave up trying to use it.

@@AllenManor Hi Allen wow lucky you I've always loved his quirky psychedelic playing , and that story sounds as though it ties in nicely with my eBay experience...no doubt someone somewhere is still trying to make it work :)

@@UKArtlover After I spoke to Will I did a little research and those guitars were very innovative. I suppose if they were built in Japan the electronics would not be a problem. Anyways, Will was a very humble and down-to-earth guy -- the exact opposite of what I imagine Ian McCulloch to be. It's hard to believe they have had such a long and successful career working together.
@UKArtlover3 жыл бұрын
@@AllenManor Indeed , Ian was never shy in ( rightly) promoting his talent ( always remember the " Greatest Album Ever Made" strapline for Ocean Rain :), I do confess though I mainly listen to the first four albums and Avant Garde B Sides like " Fuel" and " Angels and Devils" , favourites from the main albums are " Ripeness" " Thorn of Crowns" " Show of Strength" and the live " over the wall , and all that jazz" from the Shine So Hard concert at Buxton... wondrous
