That white noise in the A/B gave it away haha. And for that I actually prefer the pedal. I don't mind a bit of noise as long as it sits between the repeats 😅 But I'm guessing that the preamp pedal is important to get that same full sound as the real thing. Does sound at least as full in this. When doing your vid on the Volante, could you maybe do a comparison test with the Echoplex pedal and preamp pedal. Using Volantes Rec Level to sort of match a similar full sound. I had an El Capistan before the Volante, and it sounded fuller. On first try I was like "this is how I'd expect a real great tape delay to sound". Mind that I've tried T-Rex Replicaror Jr. D'luxe and a 3 head home recording reel to reel, and those 2 didn't sound how I'd expect a real and great sounding tape delay to sound 😅 The Volante somehow seems a little flat sounding to me. But I already knew this before switching. I wanted those extra features. But owning it now I feel like it lacks vibe somehow. Like it's a little to polished and plugin sounding. Still sounds great though. Funny thing, I just A/B'ed between a Bucket Brigade plugin and a Deluxe Memory Boy and VD400. The plugin had better sounding repeats. But it does sound like a great hardware one. That's why I A/B'ed.

I laugh when people are amazed at seeing a Real Echoplex for the first time. My wife bought me a real one for Christmas in 1978 and it was used and I learned so much about how to use one over the years...including winding my own tapes. I used to tear the strings off of my guitar as a Finale to the night and I used the Echoplex and the slide to manipulate the sound while the band was still playing....People always went crazy with the room spinning effect...

The pedal is very cool for sure, but I was pretty surprised by how much more character the delays had on the original unit. The pedal seems to emphasize a lot more low mids and not as much treble, and the original is the opposite. Also, each repetition on the original offers slight modulation from the others, whereas the pedal repetitions are more uniform. I use the Universal Audio Echoplex plug-in and it does an incredible job emulating the real thing. UA does an amazing job in general when it comes to reproducing analog/tape sound! Anyways, I I subscribed because I enjoyed the rundown and good vibes 😄✌️

I have always liked them both for different reasons. The pedal is muted, dry and precise. Low mids are thick. Sometimes I want that. The Echoplex is vibey with hiss, less forward and a deeper image. I like to high pass the fundamental on the pedal with a distressor after it. It gets closer to the original then. Great for guitar and Rhodes that way. My two cents deposited.

@@MadeOnTape No problem dude. Only just discovered your channel, but loving your videos so far. And yes, mixing both digital and analog hardware can yield great results. Either unique sounds or artifacts, or the ability to layer and manipulate things in a way you just can't digitally. I find using analog techniques gives me certain parameters to work with as well, which helps me focus when producing music

I liked the little dude more. It was more dirty & had a deeper bass that works better for my music. The new one sounded more vintage & flavorful with a unique groove. The original sounded more bright & tight. You'd think it would be the other way around. The Akai Force has a Echoplex Tape Delay emulation in their Odyssey synth plugin know as Echo, but you can't send any other audio to it. It would be nice if they make it Echo standalone then I could use on anything even it's self! I made a really crazy Test-Track with it & really liked the results, so I started doing research on it & ended up here. Now, not only did you school me on the history of this amazing device first made by Mike Battle (Dopest name ever! 😎- Mr. Battle, Jr. Battle, Sir. Battle, General. Battle, President. Battle 🫡) you also reviewed it with a remake that cost less, smaller, more easier to deal with & most importantly it even sounds better! Also you're right across the Harlem/East River out there in BK. You would love the test beat I made using the Force's Echo delay & Odyssey with a sample from a old song. I'll pass this video around the Akai family to put them on to how dope the Echo is & it's history. Peace ✌🏾

There's a _bunch_ of Echoplex pedals out there.. I really nerded out a while back, trying to find one that seemed the most "faithful" without actually being a 1:1 clone using tape and that one was always one of my favorites. Never did get one though, but hopefully someday I will. 😅 For the time being, I have the Tc electronics Alter Ego, which does a bunch of vintage delays. It would still be fun to try tape though, so I'll give it a go with a R2R soon. Fun stuff! 🙂

Late to this party here but someone mentioned the Carbon Copy. That is a great pedal for the money! The “mod” button is absolutely dreamy. I was impressed with the Echoplex pedal! Perfect, I've got a MXR Carbon Copy Deluxe which is bucket brigade, but my new amp totally clips my Roland RE201 Space Echo Pedal from the effects loop of my valve amp, as I run my dirty channel like sorta Angus Young meets Van Halen dirty. So my delays and verbs go out and back in my effects loop, my MXR has the headroom, the RE201 just clips with horrid digital clipping!! I can see the Space Echo getting sold for the MXR Space Echo, I love the MXR Bucket Brigade but miss the fat tape saturation of my RE201. This is damn close to the real deal actually, like an other reply said, you can hear a bit more of a "tapey vibe" Think I'll sell my BossRE201 and get this, then I'll have Bucket Brigade and Tape Delays sorted. Thanks awesome Video!I've been staring at my Space Echo for months thinking " sorry buddy but you gotta go" This sealed the deal given I like my Carbon Copy so much And congrats on the New Studio it is awesome and vibey now
