I imagine the lyrics of this song to be advice from a single father to his teenage son who's just fallen in love for the first time. All while he's giving this advice, in the back of his head he's thinking about the things he neglected to do with his ex (the boy's mother). He's thinking of how he was exactly in his son's position as a teenager with the boy's mother and all of this advice is for his son to learn from his own mistakes. The video begins with a young boy about to talk to a girl. It goes back and forth from the perspective of the father talking to his son and to the father as his and the boy's mother's relationship starts and ends in flashbacks. The video leads up to a scene similar to the first scene but instead it's the son beginning to talk to the girl. In the same place as his father.

My dad used to sing "you are my sunshine" to us when we were kids. When i was 5 he was knocked out by a gang and started drinking to help him sleep and was in and out of our life. I used to hate him until I found out about that. I try to visit him in the nursing homes these days and am more positive about life. He was not just a father. He was a real person with real problems. He has made me more compassionate and giving than I thought capable. If my mom fell in love with him once I'm sure I can find a way to love him again to.

I think I found this song in the fall of 2019 when my best friend since 2010 got engaged. I always ran away when I had a chance to tell her. I finally did a year later because the pandemic kinda forced me to. I told her I loved her, but I all I wanted was for her to be happy. My life was gonna be too chaotic for her anyway and well, it’s getting there, but it doesn’t really matter because she passed away last year of some heart condition. Man, to think this video was uploaded the year I realized how madly in love with her I was. I wonder how different things would be if I found this way back then. Like, not even my other friends were helpful in pushing me towards telling her.
