I worked for a very cheap Police Department, several years before I was hired, there was a jail break. The crooks broke into the police department which was unmanned at night, and stole the 3 revolvers that the PD owned, the 4th was in the hands of one of the officer. So it was, when I was hired, I was told that i would have to furnish my own handgun. Well at the time I had an old S&W Model 59 so I carried that for awhile but soon decided I wanted more power, such as a .45. Well I had an FFL at the time, so I went to Shotgun News and found the poor man's SIG, the Astra A-100, pretty much a direct copy of a Sig. So I ordered on in .45 ACP, and carried it for the rest of my police caree. That gun has served me well, and the quality of the finish on the gun has fooled plenty of folks into believing I was indeed carrying a Sig. At the range, I was able to out shoot all those who were up for qualification at the same time as I qualified. Many were still using old Smith revolvers and had to fire double action, where my little .45 was double action first short single every subsquent round. I loved the angle of grip on the gun, she is a natural pointer, and the 10 round carry capacity gives me a few extra's in case the shit hit the fan. I have 2 extra magazines giving me 30 rounds of powerful .45ACP at hand. I always have carried her with hardball ammo, I guess a hold over from my 8 years in the US Army firing that ammo.
@Ugly_German_Truths4 жыл бұрын
Just the question how "a cheap police department" with less than half a dozen officers on payroll and "giving me 30 rounds of powerful .45ACP" compute. Did your small underfunded PD have to single handedly stop Bonnie and Clyde or reenact Rambo First Blood often?

A lot of it had to do with the patent laws in Spain. Spain had copyright law at the time but now patents which meant the name was protected but not the design. This meant they stole heaps of designs and during this process because they didn’t have technical packages they iterated and redesigned and thus actually came up with an insane number of independent often non-compliant patent designs. Both a good and bad thing, I’m torn because they caused many companies to go under because they made cheap garbage copies that caused bad reputations with the genuine companies but also produced superior copies that had the opposite effect. They also innovated and improved the gun industry in many subtle ways so I’m obviously conflicted.

bleras1998 like I wrote, good and bad. Probably a bit more bad then good but innovation and iteration cannot be denied. Look at the success of China for an example of going from 3rd world crap-hole that couldn’t feed itself to a world powerhouse that owns most of Africa, has most of America’s debt, produces parts for the worlds industry and is the primary breadbasket of Russia.

The small 25 cal. pistole reminds me a lot of a category of tiny popular pistols in the 1950s/60s called Saturday Night Specials. Though as I recall they seemed even more poorly made. This class of guns at the time were blamed for many of the shootings, and the importation of which was banned in the Gun Control Act of 1968. Which many gun supporters applauded because these pistols were built of low quality steel and had poor quality control. We joked that they were almost as much danger to the user as the person you pointed them at. Sadly enough we were better off with criminals using these 25 cal. junk pistols than quality made 9mm pistols.

I always thought that Saturday Night Specials were .38 snub nose revolvers. Easier on the wallet than any automatic in a hard to find calliber.

Most of the handguns that were labeled such used zinc-copper alloy castings (a material that's lightweight, relatively strong, but a pain to machine and impossible to repair). It's often referred to as 'pot metal'. The upside is that zinc is cheap, but obsolete with modern-day aluminum alloys.
