Bungie-era Covenant weapons were terrifying. Plasma torpedoes would track a ship, as if by magic. They could be fired from the opposite side of a star system and any return shots would pass harmlessly through them, and when they did hit they would melt a dozen decks away like it ain't no thang. You had to be VERY lucky for your ship to not be one-hit-killed. They were significantly watered-down when 343 took over.

I think its to a higher degree caused by UNSC ships being vastly more powerful after the human covenant war, like the Infinity which is IMO, lorewise, too powerful. Suddenly having a UNSC ship that can dance with the forerunners essentially is too much IMO, although I think the idea of the UNSC developing vastly more powerful ships based, partly, off forerunner tech is sensible move for the lore. At any rate. Plasma torpedoes are just not a threat at all to the Infinity whereas a Halcyon Class cruiser would be threatened by them.

Not really the unsc post war technology jumped years ahead with better shields and better titanium alloy armour fomulations. Plus unsc missiles macs and nukes were all greatly improved

Now if the UNSC would have from.caputerd covenant tech developed or turned their Archer middle into giant guided plasma grenades that could have presented a good counter weapon to the plasma torpedoes that could do the damage to a covenant ship that the plasma torpedo does to a UNSC ship or cancel each other they lock into each other

I think you should do something weird, chose any ship, and both sides have the exact same ship. The catch is that the crews are different, such as Old Republic vs the Empire, or Rebels Vs even the Covenant. Star wars factions, of course will be able to use force users associated with the faction. (11th attempt)

Coil gun, AKA Gauss gun, is more complex but less power intensive and can be built for hand held. Rail gun is larger but less complex yet needs more power. Coil gun uses electromagnetic rings, coils, to individually charge and pull a projectile along. Thus only need a small amount of power which switches between rings. Rail gun uses to long rails with a conductive projectile to complete the circuit and launch with the magnetic field that is generated.

You've got it the wrong way around. For a given barrel length and power supply, rail guns can accelerate a projectile to higher velocities than a Gauss gun - however, because of the higher stresses that firing a rail gun places on the weapon itself, they require much more maintenance, and therefore there is an upper limit on how large they can be. The US Navy ran afoul of this problem - they tried building rail guns for their ships, but the barrels wore out so fast that the project was scrapped because they were deemed impractical. Tldr: Rail guns are better as handheld weapons, Gauss guns for heavy artillery.

João Soares last thing I heard is they’re switching to a modular rail system. Like a changeable Barrel kind of scenario. Turret fires. Reloads. Turns to the aft rail magazine. Old ones are yanked out. New ones shoved in. Turns to the bow. Reloads. Fires. No one likes the idea because the special $billion Railgun destroyers. Wouldn’t be able to use the system. Which makes them useless. Neither can carriers. So they’re just going to keep throwing money at it, until they achieve the impossible and create some funk space material

I always thought that the "Plasma Torpedo" was a Scarlet Red Blob of Destruction as described in The Fall of Reach Novel (Kinda like the Romulan Plasma Weapon seen in Star Trek Balance of Terror). the ones showed in the Halo 5 Fall of Reach Movie Adaptation and the Halo Legends Episode "The Package" are used much more abundantly and are tiny and don't result in 1 hit kills against UNSC Ships. For this reason I suspect there are Multiple Types of Plasma Torpedo. The Weapons on the Covenant Corvette are Plasma Cannons which Can shoot Powered Shots (Often Mistaken for Plasma Torpedoes) Phantom Gunboats have Concussion Plasma Cannons. This is merely observation.

Richard Ched The only Covenant ships that had that extremely powerful, red plasma torpedo were the OSS class battlecruiser and the OAS battlecarrier. Yes, they were powerful enough to practically melt a Paris heavy frigate with one shot, but the covenant only had 1 OSS that was one of the first ships destroyed in the war, and 2 OAS, which were destroyed during reach and during the great schism.

8:10 Whoah, whoah, whoah. 3000 tons at 4% c? That's .. crazy. Assuming they fire the projectile over about a tenth of a second, that's: 2721554 kg * 11991698.32 m/s / 0.1 = 3.26 * 10^15 Joules. That is an insane amount of energy. To put that in perspective, the Sun generates about 3.8 * 10^26 Joules per second. So, that's about a billionth of all the Sun's energy in a second. If you are using nuclear H-H fusion (Hydrogen to Helium), you'd need to fuse about 1606 kg of raw Hydrogen to get that much energy. (H-H Joules per fuse: 6.7 * 10^-14, and 1H is .0167 * 10^-24 kg) Or, with some Googling, it appears that across the planet Earth approximately 3.9 * 10^20 Joules of energy was produced over all of 2013. That one shot would take about one ten-thousandth of all the energy the human race produced in 2013. With that much power at their command, I do not see why the USNC does not use plasma weapons. Plasma is just any matter heated into an ionized gas. High-energy and high-temperature plasmas should be child's play if you can easily generate that much power on a single station fast enough to be used as a weapon. Even if not, it should be no trouble for humanity to set up a crazy powerful EM field to deflect the Covenant plasma weapons. Magnetic forces repel corrsponding to their field strengh, and with that much power to pump in to a field generator, they should be able to bat away any plasmic projectiles with ease.

an very cool match up, you have the borg who don't have the armour and built in weapon, but can last all day in a energy weapon duel. on the other hand you have the cybermen, who can literally tank anything up to an RPG and that's the normal version plus built in lasers.

@@physical_insanity i like to imagine the UNSC firing the mac cannons with a simultaneous spread of nuclear missiles. I believe it's their only way to get the covenant shields down before they get completely slaughtered

​@@Bruno-G I imagine the same sort of thing, but overtime that sort of thing becomes less effective. The electromagnetic pulse generated by the nukes should be enough to completely - or at least mostly - disable the Covenant shielding, which makes me wonder why the UNSC didn't just spam nukes in the war (especially after getting the shields down, because nukes against unshielded targets in space literally just makes the occupants pop). However, the reason why I suggest using a fleet commander who's lucky is because even if you play that right, you're still going to lose a lot of ships, because Covenant have techniques for evading those shield disabling attacks like precise, in-system slip-space jumps or just shooting the payloads and it's only with a lot of luck and tactical skill will you be able to actually get a straight bullseye. Ay, btw, don't take this as me telling you what you're doing right or wrong, I've just had a lot of fun simulating Halo space battles in my head to the point that I've slowly erred onto unworkable dilemmas like these. But I'm just rambling, so yeah..

If I had to mention one thing about the video though...Shiva nukes! they were used quite a bit in strategic ways and are one of the most commonly mentioned nukes in space combat in canon.

Um most nukes of the UNSC, Havoc and Shiva (30mt and 50mt respectively) did do serious damage to covenant ships, either shield or the ships themselves, the small nukes you are thinking of that were mainly for EMP was the Fury Tac Nuke, and that is a special ordinance used either to wipe out large amounts of ground forces, or more preferably, to take out a covenant ship through boarding action, and Archers were also used to take out shields to be followed by MAC or nuke fire, there are also many iterations of the Archer Missile, the ones used by say the Spirit of Fire are going to be rather different than the ones used by the UNSC Infinity, the main commonality being that they are presumably compatible with the same missile tubes. as such newer ones are better at taking out shields than their predecessors,

Wait, like an infantry enguagement? No contest, elites have far superious equipment with active camo and personal shields forget their weaponry, the elites stand at nearly 8' tall of taller. If you were to include vehicles in the mix, scarab is all terrain, super powerful with its main plasma weapon, no hoth tricks here. Lastly with covenant technology, it is very possible to put an energy shield on mostly any vehicle; if they can put a shield on a massive capitol ship, it wouldnt be too far of a stretch to say that there was a scarab or two with a shield. Pretty sure the swords of sanghelios would have a few scarabs lying around leftover from the covenant era at their disposal

Marcus Myburgh Its hard because you have to make them the right size and what makes that hard is there is very little information on size comparison between Star Wars and halo and the reason I chose Star Wars was because there's a mod that puts Star Wars ship into the game, but the ship are good have very similar weapons to there real counter parts ABH has a lot of the weapons I'll try to make covenant ships eventually

You do know that he may believe they would win, but we decide in the polls right? Personally against an Escort Fleet, even with the APBs the 304 will have a hard time winning due to the sheer amount of weapons fire flying around. With a ZPM they stand no chance, little does, even in Stargate. The Daedalus vs Normandy one in more interesting though...

Good point to be fair as a ZPM adds a lot of functions to a BC-304, but a battle against the Odyssey specifically could be cool as it has several unique features such as a cloak and Asgard Core

Usual unsc tactics were first do a massed Mac strike which would either take out the target or take out the target's shield which after the mac's are fired archer pods and nukes were fired

I just wanna mention, even though this won't be seen, that the giant energy projector used by Covenant capital ships early on may not have been dual-mode at all. It wouldn't be the first time they used something originally meant for excavation as a weapon and then later created a weapon based on it. The original Scarab from Halo 2 carried an excavation laser and was used in war, later being replaced by a Scarab designed specially for warfare, seen first in Halo 3.

I got the book, it was pretty good. My only complaint is that it's too short! lol Some more detailing to some of the designs would've been nice, too, though. Only special ships got full detail with color and sections really. Still worth the money, though.

MK2 (Modified) MAC is the Triple Shot variant, that uses a lighter ferric-Tungsten Carbide Projectile to decrease the amount of energy use to fire it, also the capacitors recycle the energy to allow it to fire multiple times at full charge, this variant of MAC was Designed to Cripple a covenant ships shields before finish it of with Archer missiles.

mass drivers are actually one of the most ineffective weapons to use against covenant electron base shielding which is only really vulnerable to plasma and EMP, because a good part of the kinetic energy is deflected when impacting the shield and that plasma weapons are far more energetic.

I've always felt that the UNSC should have laser Point-defense on their ships. Prowlers have pulse lasers, and really, the Spartan lasers are pretty much begging to be mounted on vehicles and starships. Just make a battery of big ones and boom. UNSC point defence is now on par with that of the Covenant.

The Halo Encyclopedia places a ship mounted MAC at .4c or 40% of the speed of light. This is supposed to be the definitive guide to the Halo universe. And written in collaboration with 343I. So yeah apparently that's the max charge of a ships MAC gun. The super MAC fires at .5c or 50% of the speed of light. Same source.

Kinetic weapons are more efficient in terms of ratio of energy consumed to energy delivered than energy weapons, and will therefor most likely remain humanity's primary way of attacking for the foreseeable future. The only exception I can see to this is when talking about combat at interplanetary ranges, as kinetic weapons are limited to traveling slower than the speed of light, and light-based weapons could be more advantageous at those ranges.

But another downside to the covie weapons are that they are very crude in energy direction, meaning that in the First Strike (I believe) Cortana was able to focus the plasma into beams, not just blobs of plasma that had more surgical precision. Pretty sure she also cut open another ship with the beams as well.

At one point the energy projector used the same technology as the beam rifle. I still believe, and its part of my own head cannon that the covenant use a particle beam projector for the energy projector as if it was plasma it would only move as fast as the plasma torpedoes. As a reminder the energy projector travels at the speed of light while the torpedo does not.

Given newer yields for Star Wars weapons, the Infinity one-shots the Malevolence from far away. Also, it's important to remember that Archer Missiles were used in an anti-fighter role. See the Halo 4: Spartan Ops opening cutscene.

I did some research. The reason I thought it would be a good match up is that both ships are Unique, of a similar size, have large, powerful main weapons, and serve as mostly unstoppable flagships. The Malevolence's ion cannon is capable of disabling a Venator-class Star Destroyer's shields in one hit. However, I am able to estimate the strength of the Infinity's shields very roughly in comparison to Star Wars shielding using everybody's favorite example: ramming! In Rogue One, an Imperial-class Star Destroyer, its engines disabled by ion torpedoes from a Y-wing, is pushed by a rebel Hammerhead corvette into ramming through an adjacent shielded Imperial-class Star Destroyer. Now, this shows an Imperial-class's shields are not strong enough to withstand a collision from an object of similar size. The Imperial-class's shields are superior to the Victory-class's, which it is basically an up-scaled version of. The Victory-class has shields approximately equal to the older Venator-class Star Destroyer(information from Wookiepedia). The Infinity's shields, on the other hand, are much stronger, as is to be expected from a much larger ship. In Spartan Ops ep1, it's shields completely tanked an impact of a 2km long RCS-class armored cruiser which was also shielded, plowing through the smaller ship. Making the somewhat realistic leap that shield strength against kinetic attacks and against ion damage is related, this shows that the Infinity's shields, at the very least, are much stronger than a Venator-class star destroyer, and thus harder for the ion cannon to disable. The Malevolence's ion cannon, while very effective against smaller ships, would likely not disable the Infinity's shields in one hit, making this a much more fair match-up. However, there are still lots of other things to consider in the battle. Sorry for the text dump.

It's not a measure of the Infinity's structural integrity, as I'm assuming that the shielding absorbed most of the force of the collision, as shown in that it takes no damage. I was talking about shield strength, and in fiction (obviously, there is no real life test) where something impacts an energy shield tends not to matter.
