Eckhart Tolle's take on free will is spot on: "On the level of egoic unconsciousness, you are a conditioned entity-your mental-emotional makeup is totally conditioned by the past-and you are completely identified with the conditioning of your mind. In that state-that, spiritually speaking, is the 'unconscious state'-it is obvious that there is no freedom at all because you are forced to act out the unconscious conditioning of your mind with which you are completely identified. Your actions are determined by your conditioned mind. You are forced to act as you do because there's no choice-choice would imply some awareness. Then awareness comes in. The human being begins to awaken. Then it appears-I'm not saying it is the case, it appears-that freedom begins to be a possibility because you can choose to step out of the conditioning of your mind. You can recognize a conditioned thought, and you are no longer compelled to act it out because there is an awareness there. You can choose a certain course of action-not from the conditioning of your mind, but from presence. So, you can act and you have much more freedom, that before you could not have. Freedom comes with awareness. So, relative to the unconscious state, there is now freedom to act. But if you look more deeply even there on that level, you are connected with the totality of consciousness. You're only an expression of the totality of consciousness. You are not really a separate entity. Was it Alan Watts who said, 'In the same way that the wave is something that the ocean is doing, you are something that the whole universe is doing'? You realize that even there, one cannot say that you are choosing this. You are expression of consciousness, and consciousness, one could say, is 'choosing'-and you think you are doing it. So, in relative terms, there is freedom relative to the unconscious state when you become more conscious. Even there, there is not absolute freedom because you do not exist as an independent entity. You are part of the web of interconnectedness that is the whole universe. So, in that sense, there is no freedom of choice of the individual because ultimately there is no individual."

This brings tears Thanks Eckheart. My brothers served time in prison for stealing to get drugs. They both passed on, the younger one that I didn't visit cause was mad with him for stealing a cheque from my neighbours post. I didn't know, I didn't understand addiction, he was not a bad person but was unwell. The next time I saw him waa in a coffin, he was 26. It's beautiful that your going to visit the prisons. My brothers were beautiful, but had a lot of pain in their early lives more than I'll ever know. God bless the work🙏 Great Spirit, help me never to judge another until I have walked in his moccasins. So sorry about your brothers. That’s tough. I have a family member who is an addict and is 34 now. He is tormented by the drugs. Actually tormented. No one would choose that life on purpose. He’s in prison until January and we can only hope he doesn’t go back to it. He was raised by a mentally ill mother who was a good mother when she took her medicine but often didn’t. He had no structure to feel safe. Drugs deceived him in to feeling good. It’s so sad for families.

Most people are taught by society to escape from real life, not to look pain in the eye but to pop a pill, take up religion or some other equally superficial nonsense like meditation. So to begin with, most people are not conscious of how they have come to be what they are. Therefore, any suffering they inflict or experience, is not so much them doing or feeling but what the parents, family, peers, society, has made them. What is self but memory? So where does the cause lie, how far back?

In a few simple words, the spiritual teacher E. Tolle answered the question that has been tormenting us - about free will - for centuries! I also believe that for those who commit crimes, nothing is better than listening to E.TOLLE's teachings. These people fall into the gravest unconsciousness, hurting others and above all themselves. @@abluecanoe Prison realities are very difficult. They are a world apart, a bit like hospitals. Even those who orbit around prisons and hospitals (two places of greatest suffering) are unfortunately and very often very greedy, incompetent and superficial they don't care about others's suffering I don't want to offend anyone, I simply observe. There is therefore immense suffering in these two places, but our society partly out of economic interests and partly out of total incapacity do not know how to deal with it....I am convinced that Tolle's teachings would help them to use all this immense pain and make it become AWARENESS . It would be a REAL help, the rest is very often fake!

Well the tricky part is that consciousness is nobody and everything at the same time. You are still reasoning on a level that makes it look like Consciousness is some kind of individuality that can say yes to some things and no to other things. You should listen to Sam Harris' (a neuroscientist and somewhat philosopher) on Free Will as well. He's also written a book on it. He believes that we have NO Free Will and has very good (and somewhat different arguments than Eckhart here) arguments to explain it. Like for example: we don't choose our parents, we don't choose our genetics, we don't choose all the current conditions in the Universe, etc. that all point you to a "decision" you didn't (really) make. But listening to him talk about these things is very comforting for someone who's made a lot of dumb mistakes and "choices" in my life. We only have the illusion of Free Will.

Interesting perspective on free will. “Freedom comes with awareness”…perfect! Right now I have the free will to choose presence over subconscious monkey chatter… there.. it is done…. I can choose to do shadow integration work and use reprogramming techniques over being a victim of programming and my own ego.. The common person will use circumstance as excuse for why their life is not working.. the spiritual warrior will take responsibility for everything right or wrong in their world no matter what was done against them because we know in this interplay of consciousness we created everything in our world both individually and collectively and we have the ability to change our frequencies (it starts with presence) to change what circumstances and people we attract into our lives and change our lives to better match our ideals.

Consciousness, what we essentially are, is free. Ego and the conditioned mind are limitations on that freedom. The recognition that we are consciousness prior to the conditioned mind opens up the possibility of freedom. Transcending conditioning does not occur through effort but rather a relaxing of old habits illuminated by the light of awareness and the understanding of our true nature.

Destiny or free will question is probably most difficult to answer for any master/guru At the level of heightened awareness one can see that consciousness expresses itself as motive force behind everything. At the level of ego identified mind it’s about improving your condition/ changing it Even for persons who reached higher states it’s necessary to keep doing/ changing worldly things with higher sense of purpose Shams Tabriz ( friend of Rumi )aptly puts it. Destiny is to the level you play your tune. It’s not about pre thought out outcomes.

Fascinating. It seems to me that universal consciousness will punish us or cause us suffering when we are not acting in a way that is conscious, loving, peaceful etc. And this suffering almost forces us to change or we will continue to suffer. So, universal consciousness changes us by giving us positive or negative feedback (karma). So ultimately, we don't really have "free will" but karmic consciousness brings about awareness which forces us to change lol :)) So, I would say when we have awareness then we can choose to repeat old unconscious behaviour or choose the more conscious path, so we do kind of have free will lol :)) Its very complicated but I understand what Eckhart is saying.

. A womens prison! You are so awesome! I would have loved to hear you when I was in jail! It was magical, we all held hands in a circle and prayed! I had never been to jail, so I’m not sure if that is the usual experience or not that I did have, but it would have been over the top if you showed up to pray with us 💙💙💙 or meditate or whatever you will do there. Thank you. This is a true story.

We can only act in accordance from the level of consciousness we’re at, so on the relative level of making apparent choices, our ability to behave differently depends entirely upon allowing our level of consciousness to expand to encapsulate a broader circle of wisdom, then we can act in accordance with it

So one description could be that freedom of the will is available, on a sliding scale, and depending on levels of conscious awareness? Also quite often people seem to conflate ‘caused’ with ‘control’ which confuses the topic

When i try to achieve consciousness, my mind is more depressed by following various methods with the desire of awareness or consciousness.. Consciousness is not about focusing or aware of ur emotions... It is COSMIC KNOWLEDGE...that is the awareness... Flow with emotions, mind thoughts whatever comes ur way.but when u have the knowledge about ur suffering that is created by mind, u will not be addicted to ur emotions without repressing..

"Free will" itself, as a concept, is IN ERROR. Each time the appearance of choice arises within consciousness, it projects the illusion of a separately existing entity - the ego. But there is no separately existing Self even TO make decisions given the choices that appear in thought form So the concept of "free will" is a play by Maya that projects the ego. To be truly free is to be transcendent of CHOICE ITSELF. A choice is a limitation on the pure potential that is true Self. Pure, undifferentiated Awareness is Well it just IS

@@Rokvtm Yes it is not of your making - you never consciously designed such pattern of behaviour. However, by identifying with it and acting it out, your level of awareness have not risen above it. So, instead of trying to stop a pattern of behaviour which you do not instigate, you should aspire to be more conscious (aware). This will eventually help you to see those behavioural impulses as separate from who you are and lead to disidentification.

We are responsible for both our conscious and unconscious mind. This responsibility ends when consciousness and unconsciousness are cleaned from the grip of the past. This is done merely by an attentive observation/meditation . Some "ordinary" people are much more effective in this process than the "meditation elites", as they know how to keep all the process of cleansing quite simple. Eckhart is a genuine "elite" who knows how to put this in the simplest way.🙏
