Back in the late 60's a neighbor took me to see the Toldeo Blades hocky team (my first Hockey game). Near the end of the match, one of the refs made a bad call that caused the team to lose. The fans spent over 20 minutes screaming obscenities and throwing things from the stands, including chairs that were just yanked out of the floor. Most of the stuff was being thrown in the direction of the ref that made the bad call, and it kept him from leaving the ice safely from the normal exit points. His only hope was to take to the center of the rink because it was harder to hit him with anything being thrown that far. Finally the police had to come and escort him out of the building. When I got home my parents asked me how I liked Hockey, so being an impressionable kid, I yelled "I loved it, it was cool". Best intro to Hockey anyone ever got.

As a goalie myself, The first one should be a goal 100% of the time. I get that the rule basically says if they even somewhat impede a goalie in the crease that it would be called back but, c'mon unless they actually interfere with the goalie making the save then it should be a good goal. Even Murray didn't seem like he thought he was interfered with.

Add the night before Thanksgiving and the fans got way too rowdy. Only questionable call for me was the contact with the goalie as you said. Because a Kicking motion with a shoe that has Blades underneath them is very dangerous? Like you see in this video goaltending is also done outside the crese. The goalies would be endangered if it would be a valid way to score a goal to kick a loose puck in front of the net.
@ChicknSandwich
@ChicknSandwich Жыл бұрын
The keyword is kicking. One can angle their skate blade to redirect the puck in, however, when there is motion is when it's disallowed. I believe it's a safety issue. If a player goes down to block a pass/shot and attempts to kick the loose puck in the net well, it's going to get ugly fast.

Lets be real here, Tatar could literally have skated around Murray instead of getting in his way.
@VoIcanoman
@VoIcanoman Жыл бұрын
_Players are _*_always_*_ trying to skate between the goaltender and their net, as it throws the goalie off, and (outside the crease) can legally impede their ability to make saves._ Moreover, if contact is made outside the crease, a goal should only be disallowed if that contact was deemed to be avoidable by the player based on their actions and the actions of the goalie (i.e. you can't deliberately skate into a goaltender). *Tatar had established a vector of motion, and he would have had a clear path - not touching Murray - had Murray not skated into that path at the last moment.* Now Tatar probably anticipated that Murray would eventually start moving towards his goal (as goalies tend to do when they have ventured outside the crease and the puck is no longer playable by them), but to make a reasonable effort to avoid contact doesn't mean "don't put yourself where the goalie wants to move." If the goalie initiates contact because you're in their way, that's on them (outside the crease). And that's what happened, Tatar intentionally put himself where Murray wanted to go, and Murray initiated the contact that caused him to fall before Tatar could reasonably move to avoid that contact. This is what good goalscorers do - they get all up in a goalie's kitchen and make them feel the heat, and they are often rewarded for it. More importantly, if a goaltender doesn't want to get impeded from returning to their crease, maybe they should avoid LEAVING the crease. As a Habs fan, I've noticed Brendan Gallagher and Josh Anderson frequently doing this (pissing off opponents' goalies this way), and it WORKS...even if no goal is scored, goaltenders are a little more hesitant to play the puck behind the net when they're on the ice, streaking in to play the puck behind the net. The only reason I can see that this was called "no goal" is because it LOOKED BAD (i.e. at full speed, it the fall and subsequent displacement of the goaltender looked like something Tatar himself initiated) when first viewed by the refs, so they made that "call on the ice" as it were, and on replay, weren't able to find enough evidence to overturn it (reason #153 why I hate the "if it's called on the ice a certain way, the standard of proof for overturning the decision must be higher than the standard of proof for confirming it" rule ...the first time a referee sees a play develop, it's at full speed, and people just can't process everything that's actually going on in real time, so to rely on that flawed perception to set a burden of proof is ludicrous).
@panda4247
@panda4247 Жыл бұрын
sure, with hindsight... you can watch if frame by frame (pause it and use keys , and . to move frame forward and back) Tatar was already mid turn going from the inside while Murray's left leg was still near the board. If he changed his mind mid-turn, he would not have made it from the outside, he would have rammed Murray full on.. Murray was not even looking to the right. If this was a car collision, Murray would be guilty 100%

I mean he definitely could have, but here’s the thing, the main issue wouldn’t be even the contact at that point, it would be the fact that even if the contact wasn’t made, he still cost Murray a second or two of time getting back to the goal if he had waited for Tatar to pass by, which would have been enough to save the goal either way, the amount of time Tatar made Murray wait, hit or no hit was enough that it would have made a difference which is the definition of interference.

@brianclayton3329 Жыл бұрын
I appreciate your analysis of this game and as a Devils fan it was difficult to watch the streak come to an end this way. I agree that the subjective nature of "distinct kicking motion" disallowed goals is a negative element of the game and we would be better to revise or remove the rule. I disagree with your last statement, however: I believe it would be FAR more disappointing as a fan of this team if the streak ended because we put forth a weak effort and were outperformed by an opponent. I believe from about the midpoint of the second through the final moments of the game, the Devils carried the momentum and even though we didn't get the win, I was proud of the effort I saw on the ice in the face of the adversity of the questionable calls. I believe the Devils can leave that game knowing they were the better team for the vast majority of the game AND can have the streak come to an end in a way that doesn't take the wind out of their sails for this next stretch of games.

that's the only angle i've seen of the 3rd goal where i could actually track what happened with the puck. every other angle seems to want to show from the more generic view, where you see the kick, and lose the puck in bodies. off that, yea. i agree with your assessment. i didn't realize there was an aspect of the kicking disallow that actually accounts for it ricocheting, but i also wasn't sure if it then hit a stick, so i couldn't rule on it one way or the other. the first goal i was a bit more "yea, sure" with it being contact in the crease, but it's also one of those where i don't think it really stopped the goalie playing his position. the second one was, like you said, contact initiated by the goalie outside the crease. which should therefore be a good goal. i would be against a rule change to allow direct kicking into the net if it's outside the crease, for a couple reasons. my main one is if you have a player who is now allowed to kick the puck in, they may kick at it while driving the net if their stick is tied up, and accidentally cause another Malarchuk class incident. i don't know about you, but that's not something i'd like to see happen again if i can at all help it. Kane's wrist was bad enough. we already have enough people driving the net hard, encouraging them to kick, lifting a skate off the ice in the process, is not a good idea. the second is the fringe case of the puck being along the lines of the crease. is that in or out? if you allow kicking, do you allow headbutting? Batting with the hand? where is that line? it's a slippery slope, safety issues aside, that i'd rather the NHL not start on.

As a former goalie I can confidently say I would consider the second goal goalie interference. From a mechanics point of view you can see him attempt to push off his skate to slide towards the left side of the crease. The player’s skate being directly pressed against the goalie’s skate stops this slide from happening. What’s left is a slightly awkward butterfly in the same position rather than towards the left side of the net.

Honestly I'm a leafs fan as well and prob have unconscious bias, but Murray didn't see the player behind him and didn't know which way he was gonna go. Murray went straight back to the net and the devils player knows that goalies go straight back to the net after playing the puck and decided to take that pathing anyway. I'm not saying it was on purpose , it obv wasn't, but he could have definitely utilized some hockey iq to go around near the boards or manipulated his body in anticipation to squeeze by there without clipping Murray.

As a Leafs fan I would say the first one was no goal, the second one was a good goal and the third one most questionable, but I think I would have counted it. The goalie just passed the puck from outside the crease and was at least partly responsible for the contact. I don’t think the refs suck, but I do think their job is incredibly difficult and they determine way too many outcomes to get emotionally invested in a team. When the integrity of the outcome is compromised it leaves no motive to care who they give the cup to. It’s just not very interesting when the player performances are so often secondary in the results to the random opinions of the refs.

I disagree with what you said on the second disallowed goal. Where is Murray suppose to go? Is he just suppose to stand still after making the pass? He passed the puck and start skating towards his net while having no idea Tatar would run into him. Tatar should’ve taken the outside lane and went along the boards. Plus I don’t think Murray dives here, he legitimately gets hit and loses balance and falls. You can see it by how quickly he tries to get up after

But when you say "Where is Murray suppose to go?", I say "Where is Tatar supposed to go?" and when do you think was the moment he should have evaluated that the "outside lane" would be free? you can watch if frame by frame (pause it and use keys , and . to move frame forward and back) Tatar was already mid turn going from the inside while Murray's left leg was still near the board. If Murray was split second slower, it would not be possible to go from the outside. If Tatar changed his mind mid-turn, he would not have made it from the outside, he would have rammed Murray full on.. Murray was not even looking to the right where he was going, of course he had no idea somebody is there and loses balance... That is his fault he was not looking. The first one absolutely should have been a goal - the player kicked the puck into their own stick. You can clearly see their stick strike the puck and then even his teamate's stick strikes the puck before it passes over the goal line. The second was absolutely not a goal. That's clear goalie interference. I'm not sure how blind you have to be to see that Murray's movements were absolutely impeded by a player from the other team inside the crease. That said, there should have been a penalty on Marner for pushing Bastian into Murray. The third one was a goal. The Devil's player was avoiding Murray and Murray skated into him. It's crazy that this was considered interference and I'm considering referee bias as a cause here.

For the first goal it's really, really important to emphasize that it was called no goal on the ice. The Devil's review had to overturn that, and there just wasn't anything to overturn. For the second, other contentious one, I think a key factor is the devils player was behind the goalie. He didn't have to cut between the goalie and the net, full well knowing a goaltender is going to be returning to the net right away. It's clear that contact was likely to happen given that, and he really made no effort to cut closer to the net when he saw Murray moving as well. He made more than one choice which directly led to the contact, and I have to imagine that played heavily into the refs decision. If I were a devils fan I would have been happy they didn't get a penalty on the play frankly. Which on the topic of penalties, I do think the devils should have gotten a delay of game for what the fans did. I understand why they didn't, nobody was looking to start a riot, but the actions were so uncalled for that I think a penalty was warranted.
