Its worth hearing it completely blindsided. We were all blindsided by Aesop at some point. I listened to this song I kid you not over 100 times over the years before things changed from catching a line, catching a few words, to having a cohesive piece of art. I was fascinated by the nuance, the vocabulary, the lyricism, the style, the message in the metaphors and idioms and such, the music itself being different than popular hiphop or other music I had been hearing. Aesop was/is a gift that keeps on giving. Even after the hundred plus listens when I thought I had it figured out something I had read about made a reference or metaphor click that gave the line in the song newer meaning and adds once again to the piece. Its fine art at the end of the day. In my opinion. Hope you can see what I mean and relate to that. These two songs were my intro some odd 15 years ago. Hope your interest piques enough to read the lyrics and think about the content. Check out more some day, when youre ready for more rewarding homework. Cheers.

Because most every song of his is dense, poetic and rewarding like this. Less so the newer stuff.

What a baffling request. I'm an Aesop fan, and he's a super impressive lyricist who fits a million smart lines into his tunes, but I would not expect a non-fan (especially someone for whom Linkin Park is the most hip hop adjacent thing they'll willingly listen to) to find much of anything to like here. Labor Days is a beloved album, but these funds are too impenetrable on all fronts to sway a proghead, imo. Cool that you checked it out, though.

Yeah I can't imagine someone who isnt at least versed in 1/10 of these words and maybe their meaning in some context lol. Hes English he might get it more than we do.

Aesop is definitely not for everyone but that's why his fans love it. Maybe something less dense like No Regrets would have faired better. At least it have some meaning that he could have followed.

I dunno, I am a huge prog head first and Aesop Rock got me into hiphop. Like his lyrics and style are progressive for hiphop.

@@cptmuska vernacular dude and aesop is quite metaphorical so even if you are well versed in English his shit can fly over the head because its not always a general metaphor but focused on specific subcultures and using their metaphors

Aesop's been my favorite poet for almost 20 years now. This is NOT how to dip your toes in.... Go for a more straightforward narrative like Ruby '84, No Regrets, Kirby, Grace, etc. Each a little full of visual metaphors, but not full-tilt complicated. Birds don't take elevators to the top of skyscrapers to learn to fly.

Aesop Rock's earlier material was VERY, VERY lyrically dense, using LOADS of idiom, metaphor, slang, jargon, cultural references, etc. His lexicon is just wonderful. His style has grown with him over the decades and now he's just as impressive, but the flow is much more conversational.

Hey, Eclectic Dreams! Thanks for giving Aesop an earnest listen. If you're willing to give his song "Rings" or "Kirby" a spin, you might like them. They are two that helped my start to understand his lyrical style, bit more straight forward in his delivery. Anyway, glad to see you're keeping a curious and open mind when approaching new tunes. Oh, also I recommend reading his lyrics while listening, if you're not already. All the best.

I can't believe I missed my own request! Glad you finally did it, though! I was hoping the inversion of themes and the use of complex motifs would tickle your fancy a bit more than Malibu Ken did. I'm glad you were able to groove to this one more than your first Aesop reaction, at the least. Very good video! Thanks for giving it a go, man.

Big Aesop fan here and I really like you man. I love how you listen to the whole song(s) and then give your reaction. Aesop isn’t for everyone and that’s totally cool. I appreciate how you give the music a chance and try to find bits that appeal to you. This is the first video I’ve seen of yours and I subscribed. Always glad to see open minded music fans on here, and I especially love it when they don’t feel the same stuff I do but honor the art. That’s all any of us can ask for and I respect you my brother.

I disagree. A lot of times what sounds like sounds are lyrics-the guy spits around 3 words a second, he’s incredible with his word placement, word choice, and breath control. It’s worth reading the lyrics, because it is hard to miss stuff with a song so dense. “This origami dream is beautiful But, man, Those wings will never leave the ground Without a feather and a lottery ticket. Now settle down.” is something that you could find in a poem. It’s slower tempo is because it’s about sadness and guilt-“Now it’s honor and I spelled it with H I stole from ‘heritage’”. Nightlight is feeling anger after the guilt and disappointment had stewed. Anyway, thanks for stepping outside of your comfort zone, giving it a try, that was refreshing. Not enough people do that.

“Aesop Rock-Dorks” or “Aesop Rock-Nons Shall Pass” are some songs that can be digested more easily.

I feel like None Shall Pass - while great - is one of his more cryptic songs. One of my favorite tracks to start people with is Blood Sandwich with the music video too. The visuals seem to help guide the lyrical content.

Daylight is one of the best records ever. I highly recommend: Mr. Lif's 'I heard it today' album next 👀. Songs: "The Sun", "I heard it Today" From 2009 and still timely for this day in age.

Aesop is amazing, but he is very "your favorite rapper's favorite rapper's favorite rapper". It's puzzling to request someone not at least moderately versed in hip hop to react to him. His dense language is a high barrier for even rap fanatics trying to get into him. An amateur to rap really has nothing beside the instrumental to latch onto, and it ends up being their life-raft so they don't sink completely.

Genuine rap like aesop is about using words and metaphors that make you think. Its telling a story abstractly instead of directly and the rhyme patterns are basically used as notes in a verbal instrument. So every voice plays at a different key, but the story of what matters. With his complexity, you could spend days breaking down what he's saying in a single song

Aes is hella dense and cryptic, personally I got into him with The Impossible Kid , Kirby made me fall in love. Still working my way back through his catalogue, it's a heck of a trip. 2 Tracks that get the point across clear to new ears are : No Regrets and Kirby.

The instrumentals here were made by his friend Blockhead who is more of a rap producer. There are albums where Aesop makes his own music and ZZZ Top(a play on zz top) and the drums are very agrresive
