little number of turns means very low voltage i suppose?
@tasa49045 күн бұрын
Motor voltage limits are dictated by dielectric breakdown actually. Reducing the amount of dielectric material between wires or using materials with low dielectric constants will lower the voltage. In this case, you'd be right but for the wrong reason. Trying to pack windings on a planar board means that the copper traces need to be placed as closely together as possible. The little number of turns means a weaker magnetic field. You can strengthen it by shoving in more current, but that would overheat the pcb and cause things to melt if you take it too far. So the motor won't have much horsepower compared to similar sized motors made the traditional way.
@nchurly5 күн бұрын
@@tasa4904 I think in motors and transformers not dielectric but core characteristics matter. Dielectric is responsible for parasitic capacitance, not for magnetic force. Bigger core - more magnetic force, stronger torque, less turns required for the same voltage, but lower speed. In case of coreless motors torque is less important than speed. Such motors are used in ultra fast servos.
@tasa49045 күн бұрын
@@nchurly When the dielectric breaks down, electricity creates a new shorter path. The rest of the coil stops being energized and the motor further loses torque. With an incomplete coil, you'll need more current to generate the magnetic field for the necessary torque. It'll overheat quickly. Speed doesn't need horsepower but you do need a minimum amount of torque if there's a load attached.
@nchurly5 күн бұрын
@@tasa4904 When the dielectric breaks down then motor fails and must be replaced to prevent fire. I was talking about normal operation.
@tasa49045 күн бұрын
@@nchurly Ah. Got it. Instead of what I said earlier about determining the voltage limits, you can instead assume that I'm pushing the point that the voltage is actually just a suggestion. They can claim that it's a 12V motor but you can probably run it at 15V with no issues. The inverse is true too. As long as the motor runs, the stated amount doesn't necessarily mean the minimum voltage amount. Having few windings with a low voltage might not generate enough torque to turn even an unloaded shaft. It might work though, since less windings means a shorter wire which means less resistance. You can get more current as a result from the given voltage.
