Hamburg's HafenCity and Tianjin's Eco-city in China were conceived as model cities for sustainable, environment-friendly building. In northern Germany, ten new housing developments are taking shape on Europe's largest inner-city construction site. The Tianjin Eco-city in eastern China is going up on virgin land.

I think making a walkable city closer to each other is one of the best ways to tackle carbon emission.

Hafvencity is awesome, but just like they say: A district for the rich and throwing in some subsidized housing won't change that concept. It's just political rhetorics..

These plans are both lovely...But does it have a dog park? (Hamburg) =p What about green roofs along the way? Any vertiscaping? etc. lol These cities still have not included spaces for nature/natural life to co-exist. There's not a lot of pet/urban farm/etc spaces and I think that is going to be these cities' biggest pitfalls. You can't have sustainability without food and certainly not without allowing for nature to coexist.

Why they try to be so skeptical about everything Chinese? That's not the way we should build up co operation.

At least the Chinese city had more greenery/the possibility of being able to have a pet and etc in the end plan. Granted, I would certainly expect that polluted land to be a problem. It would take a few years to remove all the pollution responsibly. I think they probably DID cut a few corners there.

The chinese should learn about modern urbanity, we aren't in the 1920's and not that block building trash. So, big transportation roads, skyscrape likely housing, creats long distances to work, neighboors, commerce. Wich means they would need to take the car to work, cunsume. And then how about the public transportation system? The city seems souless and it's quite doome to fail

How? The real problem is our current economic model its based on growth and mass consumption. Its completely understandable, we must change our ways or future generations will suffer.

LaidBackLife what about personal autonomy?
@edwardiris58

I'm not against personal autonomy, but I do believe humanity as a whole should work towards sustainability. building smarter city's doesn't necessarily equate to loss of freedom, it's not like we were given a direct choice in how todays city's are built. If anything people are standing up for their right and beliefs, demanding government and corporations to be more environmentally conscious.
