We spent an amazing day at the Sustainable City, a housing development in Dubai with 3,500 people already living there and it's still not quite finished.
This truly is a remarkable achievement, a stark lesson to building contractors the world over. It's not more expensive to build and it's hugely cheaper and more efficient to live in. Inspiring sustainable city planning!

C Most of the world does the same. All new build properties should legally have to have a grey water capture system for toilet flushing and garden watering, the costs are minimal at new build stage. Even in England we have severely water stressed areas, yet billions of litres are flushed every single day.

If you look at the Eastern European countries those folks earns approximately the same amount so called by you "slaves" earn in the Middle East but have prices just like in the Western Europe and can afford even less inside of their own country, they don't have anywhere to move back to, they are to stay in a reality where they'll always be poor and real "slaves" inside of their own country.

One of the main reasons this won't work in the US is because property development market is very money hungry and developers won't sacrifice huge profit margins on something like this especially since they don't know how such city would play out in the NA market. Once one project like this appears in the US then many more could come, but for one to appear is a great luck.

When I see something like this in one of the oil rich countries, I just want to cry. They "get it" and realize that we need to be moving to a sustainable energy system and doing what is right for the ecology. Not like the idiots in office here now who want to drill and burn their way through as much fossil fuel as they can. I'm trying to do my little part. My solar panels are now generating slightly more than I use and my Tesla Powerwall is in the pipeline to be installed in a month or so. When that happens, I will be 98% electricity self-sufficient. I'm not one of privileged rich so I have to stage things as my meager budget allows. In the long run it will be cheaper than continuing to use electricity from our local coal fired plant.

@@Noname_2014 Fair point, but future communities don't need to be this fancy. They could build tiny home villages that are both sustainable and affordable. This just excites me, because it shows that there are people who are really working towards designing better cities. I've never seen anything this large scale before. Plus, rich people are probably the ones doing the most damage right now in terms of their carbon footprint, so giving them an appealing alternative is important.

At the time they were planning the city vertical farming wasn't as popular and widespread as it is now. Keep in mind that UAE and it's property market keeps developing so this project will just as well have a second phase where I'm sure vertical farming will be implemented, just as many new solutions that appeared during the past few years

There is a law in the US that made it illegal for the US military to build infrastructure within the United States. This law needs to change, the US Military is continuously building infrastructure OUTSIDE of the US while US Infrastructure continues to decline. Sustainable developments need to be constructed from sustainable materials and not simply use renewable energy and have a few more recycling stations.

They actually said that their net energy use from the grid is zero, and that it's economically sustainable too (which means it's not more expensive then regular housing). I'm usually skeptical about renewable energy, but in deserts solar actually makes sense now that the prices are more reasonable. I'm still skeptical about the UK and Germany. Also you can simply go nuclear and forget about conserving energy.

Brilliant! What is so important is we seperate cars further from our living spaces. Encourage community working together. I wish my children could grow up in a place like this. the uk need to do something similair but i think the cars should be underground as we dont have as much space and more/bigger green areas.
