Every week, Eco India brings you stories that inspire you to build a cleaner, greener and better tomorrow.
As India’s cities grow, their mountains of garbage grow too. In Chandigarh, household waste segregation has been mandatory for several years. Now the city has gone a step further. It’s started the door-to-door collection of sanitary waste, a measure that targets plastic pollution - as well as the taboos associated with menstruation.

It's sad and inhumane to see these workers do such work. Basically it's not their waste. I don't understand why people find it so difficult to segregate waste. It's just 2 categories dry n wet, nothing rocket science in it. The day when the masses realise this, it will be a revolutionary step for all our environment and health related issues.

Please promote the use of silicone menstrual cups, and educate women on how to use them and keep them clean and hygienic - they would solve the pollution problem at its root, since there would be zero sanitary waste to dispose of.

Chandigarh has also been making these large bio composting tanks near every park to deal with wet waste. There’s also electric charging stations being set up at a park near me. Change has to start somewhere 😊

This is India, where the poor are seen as disposable and have no value in society (even though they keep our cities going). What do you expect?

Imagine these sanitary waste ending up in landfill where it touches the plastic bottles that is probably recycled by Coco cola or pepsi to reuse for manufacturing their products! 🤢
