Join us as we deep-dive into questions about growth, value and the economy with Ecological Economist Simon Mair. Inspired by his article 'What Will The World Be Like After Coronavirus?', we talk to Simon about the field of Ecological Economics. We explore how we might imagine alternative economic futures which are more JUST and FAIR, drawing in concepts from Kate Raworth's Doughnut Economics.
What started out as an interview has now become this video, a 10-minute animated rollercoaster through topics such growth, value, the economy, Covid-19, mutual aid and so much more... Topics that we believe should be engaging and accessible to all.

I think this is an excellent introductory video and should definitely be shown as part of school Humanities and Economics curriculum

thank you Kirsty! We completely agree that economic thinking and a basic understanding of 'value' should be explored throughout school.

I really like this! As an academic ecological economist one of my criticisms has been its lack of political stance, but this really showcases how beneficial ecological economics could be in transitioning us away from the 21st century form of political thinking, and create new possibilities for how we live and work! Love it!

Ben! We are so very very delighted you found this video, and have such positive feedback. Out of interest, where did you find it? And how do you think we can share the video with the community of Ecological Economists as well as 'laypeople' too? As for the transition towards new political thinking, we couldn't agree more. It would require a systemic change that would shift how we make decisions and live on a daily basis. We can't improve life for many, or provide what humans need to live without overhauling both our economic and political logic. Bryony :)

This is such a FANTASTIC intro into the concept of ecological economics and I am so excited to watch future episodes. Really love the medium of video to help explain the issues and opportunities. I'm really interested to learn more about alternatives to the two dominate structures (capitalism and socialism) and wonder if countries like Finland have found a new structure? And keen to know more about Spain's universal income plan - such a smart concept.

Ella! Oh it's replies like this that keep our storytelling flame alive... we're so glad it got the juices flowing and you thinking about alternative models. Totally agree about shifting the paradigm away from the two obvious models of Capitalism and Communism and towards things like Finland's more socialist model (e.g. they solved homelessness by actually providing people with stable, reliable housing - far cheaper than the wrap-around services required to help homeless on the streets and actually so much more effective). We've found Charles Eisenstein's writings on economics really inspiring, because he combines the concept of ancient gift-culture with contemporary ideas like negative interest currency, internalisation of environmental costs, economic localisation and embracing technological advances. As for Spain's UBI scheme, we've actually heard mixed reviews of how successful it's been in terms of actual roll-out. Sadly, schemes like this are ripe for abuse and all depend on how-wel they're delivered. Other thinkers like Aaron Bastani advocate for 'Universal Basic Services' as opposed to Universal Basic Income, where things like healthcare, education, transport, and eventually even things like housing would be free. Food for thought....

Some very interesting ideas here which are put across in a straight forward way. Covid has exposed more people to alternatives and I wonder how many prefer them to traditional capitalist ways of meeting needs.

Thanks so much Rose. We sincerely hope those alternatives are promoted as we emerge the other side from this pandemic...

I think UBI is the way forward, it's just what that's set at that would be up for debate! Efficiency and innovation are the positive side of capitalism, even solving problems caused by capitalism in the past (EVs distributing the car industry for example). But they have to be balanced against other priorities.

Exactly! UBI could be a great solution! but as always the critical linch pin will be the finer details of the policy.
