love your lectures, but my experience in the Texas public school system is slightly different from your description. You are correct in saying we did not cover the Civil War in any detail, but slavery definitely was HEAVILY covered.

At best, the study of history in our high schools is an introduction only. Understanding history required a life-long commitment to diverse readings. The Civil War was inevitable because the families who sat at the top of the social ladder in each of the states never shared values.

There was recently this year 12 years a slave, and some critic was mad because the "slaves" in the move were not happy. Said it was not realistic of what slavery was really like down there during that time. If that was the case then what is their response to people like Fredrick Douglas, Harriet Tubman & the Underground Railroad, or Black like me novel... we know they were not happy. That is just delusional and insulting to sensibilities.
