I found an economical fuel pump on Ebay for my 2000 Dodge Ram dually with a 5.9 Cummins turbo diesel. I am not sponsored by Herko Automotive. I just wanted to share this so I might help someone else out.

I went through several of those stock pumps, and been running one like you show there for several years. Mine was bought at Autozone and is an Airtex brand, but looks the same as the Herko. That’s a good price and I’ll keep it in mind if I ever lose another lift pump!

@@this-Cowboys-Ride all right cowboy thanks for the response. It’s funny about the pump and said to myself this thing is completely different and then looked it up on KZbin and you were the first video with the exact same situation. If I remember correctly it looks pretty dry where you live are you in the southwest and do you have any cattle or horses dealing with drought. Thanks for your Spons so quickly after five years from doing this video

Back in the day, lots of guys used to run two stock pumps in series....so they got 25psi and ran them like that for years. Although Cummins doesn't recommend over 20, it seemed to work.

Thank you for the video. I have a 2002 dodge 3500 Cummins 5.9 24v. The person that owned before me apparently put a fass aftermarket inline pump attached to the frame on the truck when the tank lift pump when out. Im having the same issues. What’s weird is the truck fuel pressure goes back to like 12-15 once the truck has been sitting for a while. It stranded me a week ago and I had it towed. Sputtered and had no power but it did idle. Couldn’t drive home. After the tow driver dropped the truck at the house which was about an hour ride. I started the truck and it ran normal and the pressure was back to 12-15 from the zero it was at when it stalled. It has done that three times. Idk if I should replace the after market pump or just take it out and put a new tank lift pump into it. I don’t think my truck has the pump up front like the one you replaced.

My understanding different models didn't have it. I know for a fact those injection pumps can't handle being starved of fuel. I ended up having to replace mine

I'm glad I could help. Unfortunately 4 weeks later my VP44 injector pump failed from driving it to long with low fuel pressure. If that happens replace the the camshaft sensor behind it. The pump is an easy change so don't feel you aren't capable of doing it if you have basic mechanical skills. Just get ready to spend $1200 and up. When mine quit it failed to start but would run badly with the half the injector lines cracked open. Good luck and keep a check on your fuel pressure

After watching your video I bought a Herko lift pump for my truck. I have put three of them on and they do not get pressure like yours. I get 20 psi with the key on and less than 10psi when I start the truck and if I rev it a little the pressure goes to zero. The people are really nice and keep sending more pumps but I am tired of changing them out. Is your pump still holding up ok. What do you recommend to me

Thanks for posting! I just bought a non-running 2000 at auction. The voltage to the lift pump was 8 volts and the voltage to the fuel pump relay was 8 volts. I checked voltage at the harness to the ecm and got 12.8 at pins 48 and 50. Just as it should be. I also checked the resistance of grounds from the harness to the engine/battery ground - very little resistance. I jumpered the lift pump and fuel pump relay and started motor ---> the crankcase filled with fuel and started spewing it out the crankcase breather. 😥 The question is -- where is the fuel coming from? Blown shaft seal in VP44? Bad injector? Thanks...

A bit of advice you do not want to play games with the lift pump low lift pump pressure is the leading cause of injector pump failure . Rotary or P pump type. It makes the pump cavitate and over heat. That apply's to Cummins, fords and duramax . You saved a whole $100 and it will cost you $1000's. You see all these cheap you tube engineers with there cures and every one of them will be buying a new main injector pump.

@@this-Cowboys-Ride Ps your losing to much volume even revving the engine at no load. remember on a diesel the gas petal is a fuel valve not an air valve. So if your losing that much pressure pushing the petal down maybe 1/4 travel in neutral (No load) you will have issues under load were you are applying more fuel as in petal travel.
