What both of them fail to measure with respect to the 1970's inflation rate increase remark Neil makes, is that the wage to inflation gap was less in the 70's regardless of what the increase was. Today the gap is much larger, so a 9% increase today is EFFECTIVELY larger than an 11% in the 70's. You ALWAYS have to measure both the rate of increase and the gap relative to income. It is about the percentage of cost to income that is important, not just the increase in cost.
