Economy of Germany: Unraveling German Economy & Mittelstand

The economy of GERMANY is the biggest economy in Europe, and the 4th largest economy in the world by GDP, powered by Mittelstand, and has the history of rebuilding itself from square one.
The video also discusses Mittelstand businesses which are mostly family-owned private businesses, often of small size to medium range, characterized by a common set of values and operational practices. It is more like a business culture with firms having a unique way of doing things. The firms are mostly run by the ‘owner entrepreneurial families’ who are interested in the sustainability and longevity of the business. They are highly focused on the idea of doing one thing well first and diversifying internationally later. While the world keeps on praising the ‘serial entrepreneurs’, Mittelstand companies are geared by love and commitment for a product or service. Mittelstand companies are in it for the long run which makes it different from the typical public firms around the world who have to face pressure quarterly or annually to meet the financial targets.
The video also discusses German's economic inclinations towards not taking debt and spending less than their means. It also discusses adoption of Euro as a currency and its impact on the country's exports. The country also has a strong vocational training program etc.
From World War 1, war reparations to Hyperinflation, from building themselves up again to the Great Depression and World War II, from rebuilding the country after the war to the reunification of the country and embracing the less economically stable half, from the eurozone crisis to the global financial crisis and Brexit, Germany has seen its fair share of troubles. BUT, it always marches forward… German efficiency is real, and its economy is no joke.

A German couple have a baby. For 4 years he makes no sound, does not speak. Then one day the mother gives him soup, he says 'this soup is cold'. The parents are amazed and ask 'if you can talk why have you not spoken before?' The child replied 'up to now everything has been satisfactory.'

Whilst Texas (for example) might be a lot bigger than Germany, Germany still has a much higher economic capacity, a higher population density (USA: 33/km2, Germany: 233/km2), etc. So really, the fact that the US are huge doesn‘t make it any better than Germany :)

It's kinda astonishing when you look at the size of Germany. They fought Russia, UK, the USA and the other allied forces while being half the size of Texas. And now this tiny country is a global player in the economic sector. For the past ~50 years. Sure, without the help of the Allies after the war, it would've looked different. But they used what they had.

You do know that it is effectively countries like Greece in the EU that allow Germany to sell it goods cheaper and drive an export economy? If the Germans had their own currency like the deutchemark its value would be higher than the Euro and it would be tougher to sell German goods. Germans are free riding the weaker countries of the EU on the euro currency, and these weaker EU countries have to pay more for their goods due to having a stronger currency than they would have otherwise.

@@thevan4476 Sorry but you do not know anything about economy. While it´s true that a weaker currency at first lowers price of export in the international market, the cost of having a shared currency with countries of lower incomes and less productivity is huge for all market participants in Germany. German firms exporting to countries inside the EU receive payment orders through Target system, thus diminishing its financial stability. German state must pay huge amount of money through taxes to bail out weaker economies in the EU from time to time and have to assume the political responsability for those countries fortunes. German workers, who by the way had to work hard for more years and sometimes have less social benefits than those in weaker countries like France, Italy, Spain or Greece, have to pay higher taxes and their savings are used by the European central bank every year to buy bonds of weaker economies and thus diminish their huge debts and if it wasn´t all, Germany as a whole have to bear the huge liability for those weaker and more unstable countries in the Eurozone, thus receiving less long term imvestments from abroad . Without the Euro, the DM would be stronger but firms in Germany would have a better incentive to innovate and keep competitive internationally, it would also be much cheaper and easier to buy assets and aquire other firms in other countries with a stronger currency . Germany financial services would be much stronger, maybe on pair with the US and Germany GDP per capita would be a lot higher. In the end, the euro which was imposed mainly by France after german reunification who feared Germany could become too powerful, might not have been a good business for anyone in the EU.

Your explanation of a Marshall plan is rather misleading: 1) Germany wasn't the only or even the biggest benefactor. UK was (some 40% of total funding) 2) The main part of the plan, with large financial transfers from US to Europe was very short lived. Three years, if I recall it correctly. 3) This help wasn't entirely selfless. USA was looking for markets for its goods and services and this helped to build such markets rapidly after the WW2. 4) Finally, let's not forget the fact that USSR proposition appeared quite attractive after the war and until early to mid-60es. Keeping Europe from adapting Communism was a highly important strategiec goal for the USA. Don't get me wrong, I still believe that Marshall plan was very helpful for Europe and for Germany, but presenting it as USA selflessly helping the former enemy and forgetting the importance of the European integration that started in early 50es and eventually became EU is very misleading. Other than that, excellent video.
@swanpride
@swanpride 3 жыл бұрын
5) Also the money was originally not supposed to be a gift, it was supposed to be a loan. It was basically changed into a gift after the fact, because most country who got the money spend it, and would have had trouble to repay it (above all the UK). this had the unintended effect that Germany, which did treat the money like a loan, is still profiteering from the money. Under the assumption that the money had to be repaid, Germany put it into the KfW, and used it to give out micro credits. And that system is in place up to this day, stimulating the economy even in times when the government itself decided to save money. Since the money is nearly untouchable, it is a nice little nest egg.

@G B you are also oversimplifying. In addition to being a great opportunity for US to avoid recession, it was also absolutely great as a way to cement their political power. Economically, EU may have caught up somewhat, but politically US can still do more or less as they want in Europe. In fact, Trump has been extremely upset to find that his power in Europe does have some limitations and the pressure Bidens administration is still putting on Germany shows that this way of thinking isn't gone - it's just back to more diplomatic forms of expression.

Today's Germany is ashamed of what the Nazis did, despite having nothing to do with it, since everyone who had anything to do with it already died in some German prison. We Germans know better than most other nations what damage extremism can cause. This is why most Germans hated Donald Trump from the start. He is an extremist and will cause lots of damage if he is given power. The damage he inflicted to the US and the world was just a foretaste of what would have happened if he had stayed in power.

Addendum to the historical part: The reparations after WW2 were partially payed with industrial machinery. That helped the economic boom in west Germany in no small part, as it meant the means of production had to be replaced with newer, more modern and thereby more efficient machinery, while neighbouring countries like France used Germanies outdated machines. That gave them a considerable edge in the market during the time of rebuilding.

I was once working in a very small german company, run by only two masters and a handful of apprentices. The entire production line was in a room of less than 100m². They produced exactly one product which was high precision lifting platforms. They had a maximal lift capacity of only like 10cm but they could lift to the PRECISE height you wanted them to lift with almost nanometer precision. You can pretty much assume that any company that produces microprocessors or similiar products that require nanometer precision in the production process as well as many labs worldwide at some point has done business with that company.

The reason Germany has such a strong economy is because of their culture that's why they are able to revive from every situation they get into. What is truly impressing about its people is the strong work ethic and the amount of patients they have which is something not easily to be found in many other cultures. And btw Germans do have a sense of humor they came up with Bauhaus( oh come on I had to ;) ). Greetings from Greece

Great video! Even pointed out some things i, as a german didn´t know about us. As much as the point with education and training is true, but there is very low political and financial support for jobs in the healthcare system , like nursing or physical therapy. You had to pay for your training as a P.T until 2018 i think and the salary for nurses is a constant problem in Germany , reaching its summit with the corona virus ( but i think thats probably a problem every where , correct me if your country has a "fair" salary for nurses for example). Also including medics, healthcare helpers etc. That led to the headhunting of "cheaper" health care workers from Poland, Czech Republic, because too few germans would like to work in the healthcare system. The missing lobby for the health care system is often pointed out as the reason for that , meaning that there is not enough money to be made , at least thats what the understanding of the general public is in Germany. Also the Union between West and East Germany is not finished yet, meaning , that "the east germans" feel left behind in points like education, salary infrastructure etc. by the goverment. The fact that Germany kept up without a company like Apple, Google, Amazon or even something remotely close of a tech corporation says a lot about the industry and working class. BUT the internet connection and prices is probably the worst german joke there is. Would love to see a video about China, because of the completly different approach of China in comparison to more capitalistic economys like South Korea and Japan in the asian area.
