I was surprised too, but if you think about it Nick, it's how you align the wire in the first place. If you put the wire in perfectly at 90 degrees to the rollers, then, with the wire held/guided in two places, and it'll carry on going in line but if the guide plate was far enough away from the rollers so as to allow the wire to go in at even a slight angle then the wire would continue to be progressively drawn to one side, more and more. Anyway, the way your wire pattern alignment came out was very impressive. Well done, it shows how attention to little details really counts. All the best . . . . Andy

I *yelled* when you bolted on that guide, it’s brilliant! I’ve got to make one. I gave up using my fancy wire roller because I couldn’t keep the wire in the grooves, and this is the solution.

Hi Jeannie, as a hobbyist I’m a great believer in a cheap tool is better than no tool. Over the last 10 year's I’ve had great use out of this mill without any problems. it’s obviously not as powerful as a machine that can cost 4x more so you need to check its specifications and capabilities but it’s a very functional mill with all its interchangeable rollers. knowing it’s a budget mill I never overexert it and just take it slowly, however I have produced a lot of wire using it … N

Hi Hallieshouse, you could use general-purpose brazing rod for steel it has a yellow brass colour. there are a lot of variations for different purposes I found one that is sold for copper to copper brazing which matches in colour. you can make your own silver solder by melting and mixing 1/3 brass to 2/3 sterling silver i’ve not tried it myself, but it’s supposed to work well … N

Thanks Lena, this mill is sold under the name “budget rolling mill” with seven interchangeable rollers. I got mine from cousinsUK they call it a “value” mill. When searching on Amazon it sometimes appears as coming with five rollers instead of the seven. I think it’s been such a popular mill manufacturers are now making generic rollers with a variety of textures and patterns that can be bought individually to fit … good luck with it … Nick

I did modify a pair of circlip pliers that come in very useful for chain making. I often use rubber tube over the end of my round nose pliers for a soft grip … can never have too many tools … N

Cheers Ballistic, I was surprised how well a small hole worked to help prevent the wire wondering. Modifying tools can be a touchy subject with some viewers. The short version of the pliers video kzbin.info/www/bejne/jXyTaIymesmApqM went a bit viral and generated an immense amount of hate comments, ended up just turning them off. I first came across dowel plates when helping someone with green timber framing. Worked really well on a larger scale. Hi Vikki, I got my economy rolling mill from www.cousinsuk.com it has served me well for many years and was a great introduction into the possibilities of using a mill. However it is the cheapest on the market and has to be treated with care and not overexerted. it’s maximum capacities is nothing compared to more top end models but I have made a lot of wire with it and I love the option of changing rollers and it’s ability for textured ones … good luck with it … N

hi waltz, this is a budget mill it’s the cheapest Rolling Mill on the market so don’t expect too much. however I love it, great introduction for a hobbyist. I have done a lot with it and the interchangeable rollers are very versatile. Hi Gene, I bought mine from Proops Bros Limited here in the UK many years ago. I think it was about £170. I’ve noticed that Cooksongold sell it now for a lot more money. Different sellers provide it with different roller combinations that you need to be aware of to get a good deal. It is very much a budget machine and it’s not been without problems. I had to return some of the interchangeable rollers due to manufacturing defects. However saying all that I strong believer in “a cheap tall is better than no tool” … good luck with it … Nick

I think it might be a bit hit and miss what stock you get when purchasing this mill. also some of the rollers may be discontinued. I’ve noticed somebody is manufacturing generic texturing rollers with all sorts of nice designs that may fit this mill. unfortunately not cheap like the original mill and rollers… Nick

here in the UK we have a lot of choice where to buy such stuff. When searching “budget rolling mill” on Amazon numerous sellers appear in the results. I bought mine from proopsbrothers.com however even Cooksongold.com sell them these days … hope you get it sorted … N

when it first came on the market about 10 years ago, there was no other economy rolling mills to compete with. so it was promoted as a “budget rolling mill” it was so popular that other manufactures soon caught up and released other economy rolling mills with various designs. The original budget mill was well loved because it often came with seven interchangeable rollers for wire making, texturing and sheet work. it is still available from some suppliers found by searching for “budget rolling mill with interchangeable rollers” being so favoured other manufacturers have been making generic rollers to fit it with many other textures and shapes … N
