I’ve always felt economics should be ALL high school student’s focus from 9th-12th grade. It’ll be four years of critical thinking and understanding of how and why the world operates the way it does. Of course make time for arts and phys ed but HS would’ve so much more interesting and beneficial going into college if we all knew how to think like an economist

I am now a high school economics teacher, after spending the first 15 years of my career as a financial advisor and investment compliance officer. My son just graduated with a degree in economics and math and is heading to law school in the fall. Of interest, he started as a mechanical engineering major, and switched to Econ after 2.5 years. He still was able to graduate in 4 years after taking just two classes during the summer. Economics is a great major to consider switching to, if you find that your heart just isn’t in your (first) chosen major, especially if you have taken plenty of math classes.

What did I do with an economics major: tried Phd, dropped out, became an economic consultant, wanted to dig into the theory more so went back for a PhD (part time for a while), realised academic research wasn’t for me so went back to consulting, got a phone call one day from a headhunter inviting me to work for the energy regulator (my field) so headed to the public sector to make a difference, found making a difference fantastic but hard work at senior level, had a year out to be Mum, set up my own consultancy which was pretty successful because by then I had expertise and network, did not like isolation of being a one-man band or income uncertainty of self employment so took a side job teaching economics at a local university, remembered how much I loved being a TA when doing my PhD, as if by magic as things clicked my institution where I had done my PhD advertised for teaching focused roles, 9 years after graduating from PhD went back to my alma mater and have stayed in this role longer than any other but the road is still there for travelling.

My problem with economics papers/books is that tiny word smuggled into calculations, 'assumption'. Depending on x assumption, a model may or may not work; that assumption often has multiple variables that have to be bundled ( a bit like 2008), leading to answers that are not statistically significant if the whole truth is known. I find myself more and more leaning towards Keynes and his theory of 'uncertainty'; mainly, we can only predict with any certainty into the very near future from our present; the further from that point, the greater the uncertainty due to those damn 'assumptions' and hoping a flock of Black Swans don't appear. He said (in reply to Adam Smith's in the long-run returning to an equilibrium), 'In the long run, we're all dead'! Economics is a messy, evolving, unpredictable human social science, not Newtionain. (Keynes) That is not to discount economics as an academic profession; it just needs a lot more humility and grace when presenting 'a model', not unlike architecture and landscape architecture, which are my base professions; the arrogance often goes off the Rictor scale when a tradesperson offers a solution Note: The tradesperson is the person who touches, experiences, and understands the physical rather than 'just' the theoretical. I would like to hear back from anyone about coping with the issue of 'assumption' and how many models actually have come to an answer with the few rock-solid variables allowed. Remember, Supply and Demand only work where both parties have all the facts (transparency), are of equal need and power (e.g., water in a desert), have equal racial, cultural, and religious power (no matter the country, this is still relevant), and finally, who has the most money/gold/military power(mercantilism) (Mariana Mazzuczto) The 'free market' is a myth (no offence to Adam Smith, a good man of his time) that feeds the world of mercantile infinite consumption philosophy (Thomas Mun) and Neoliberal economic agendas (obviously - Hayek and Friedman).

Only major in Econ if you want to go to grad school for a PhD, also then you would need a math major as a well to land at a good school . Just a BA in Econ is a waist of time since you don’t have an actual skill. Do finance since it’s somewhat similar but more marketable or do accounting

Dr. A I really hope you open and see this, even though it’s been months since the video came out. I have a question, I been doing my research about taking economics or what actually economics can influence just not myself but to a lot of people, question is: Does attending a specific school matter? in terms of wanting to have a great outcome of learning THE ECONOMICS. I know IVY league schools teaching in economics are way focused differently (which is not an ideal to attend by everybody) than other colleges. Last question: Is economics fully based on essays and Is writing essays a huge factor in passing this major? Coming from me who really struggled or who procrastinate writing essay but willing to learn how to write essay specifically and learn.
@EconWithDrA2 жыл бұрын
Mesha, I see your comment. I’ll try to answer your questions but I am sure my answers will spur other questions so please ask away. 1- does school matter? Yes schools matter. But it depends on what you want to do, what life you want to have, and where you want to live. It’s more complicated question. Path to economics and careers in economics are so varied. 2- economics is based on your ability to communicate complex ideas effectively. Whether that is through essays, data visualizations, or mathematical expressions. You will have to communicate, the method will vary. Also writing ability is not fixed, you can learn how to write, with the right help, you will learn to love it. Finally, have you checked out our speaker series? www.theecongames.com/ It’s a good group and network to affiliate with. Hope to see you at one of our speaker series. Next one is April 6th

@@EconWithDrA thank you so much for responding never thought you’d see it. Anyways, reason why I asked the first question is hearing from others that there are some colleges specifically professors that don’t so well have students understand economics as the outcome, which I agree and disagree until I saw your “how to learn” vid. Talking about you need to teach yourself or using the method (SQ3R method) on how to learn new things in general literally was just watching it soon as I saw your response. Like I’m an open minded student or I try to be, math wise I have no problem with it, data visualization i can deal with and as long as I have a good teacher that can go deep into it yeah I’m open for it to learn, and etc. I truly want to be an instrument to influence people in a broad way you know like I think bigger than me and the way I look at conflicts around us it gets my nerves thinking deep solutions for it and that’s why I find economics comfortable to think and wanting to learn. Reason why I asked what specific school are they and i know there’s a lot out there. I’m thinking UTAH STATE UNIVERSITY. I appreciate your time

I studied Economics and I would like to believe that the primary reason I studied the subject because it potentially touches on the life of every American and may be the underlying factor influencing much more important events that happen in a person's life. Ideally we should live in a world where money doesn't matter. But really? I guess I'll leave it up to the reader to decide. Yes, I was hoping for some income too. You can't save the world if you can't save yourself. I don't know if Economics was such a good idea to be honest. There are so many interesting occupations and possibilities in the world that concentrating on a pile of Gold Goins is not always appealing. Several years ago I was working through some equations and thought I had solved a huge economic problem. Only to spend more time on the topic and re-think my equqations and realize... well I was wrong. I had not saved humanity. But at least I had made the effort. I tried.

@@EconWithDrA Yes, honestly I originally picked economics because LSAT scores are typically higher in Econ majors and they earn more money later. But I found that once you get past the initial gen ed Econ 101 type of credits, economics opens up more of an interesting world of the intersection between economic theory and other disciplines like psychology and public policy. Further, I find that I apply principles of microeconomics and macroeconomics frequently in dealing with the federal government, representing individuals and businesses, and those arguments are more compelling than almost all others. Visualizing and charting data for people was also a skill I honed in attaining the Economics B.A.

That might be true depending on the school you go to. But theory is important. Applying it is important too. I think all majors are better when combined with other majors.
