Some notes, point by point. Intervention as a coach, the role of the coach in the ecological approach vs the IP traditional role. Traditionally belt relevant, paying more attention to the higher belts, and less attention to the lower belts. Knowledge about (secondhand) more IP vs knowledge of (first hand experience) more ED Focus of attention. External or internal. Its better to teach with external focus of attention. Working memory and cognitive load. External example. Looking to armdrag, "try and pull your arm across your body" vs " pull their arm across your center line" Attention on the environment (external focus of attention) Goal is, everything youre reacting to is in the environment (external) Language usage is a big deal. Gaby Wolfe reference. Traditional role-fixes perceived errors as soon as they occur. Urge to correct "wrongness". Idealization of techniques. Right vs Wrong ways. Ecological role-looking to design environment spaces, facilitate learning opportunities within the environment. Culture and atmosphere can make or break the approach. Engagement. Question about culture, half ip gym inquiry. Hard question to answer. Try to be respectful. Ed thinks its difficult to answer. Constraints and games designed to focus intention/ attention of the athlete. Focus on supporting athlete to gain knowledge of ( first hand experience) If you feel there are times where the students are not engaging with the task, coach intervention may utilize a bit of direct instruction. The best way to intervene depends on a lot of things, even knowing when to intervene. Circumstances where the challenge point is in the sweet spot of difficulty level. Not too impossible but not too easy. Ratio of success to failure is manageable. The responsibility becomes put on the more experienced people. Encourage mistakes as part of the learning process/self organization. Correcting a mistake too quickly may interfere with the learning process. As a coach, be wary of interfering and allow space for the class to learn. Accept loss of control. You will not be the central focus as a coach. Would you give the details? It depends. Answer every question this way and you cant be wrong. Understand the athletes, use discretion and good judgement. If you intervene, how will you intervene? Students relying on coach as a hub for information. Managing levels of motivation and engagement in the room. Can I get them engaging more? Coaching within another gym with another head coach can present problems with interpersonal ego challenges/respect. The student will be dealing with the two conflicting approaches. Dependence on teachers/learned helplessness. Teaching CLA with EcoD out of an IP gym. Designing games in IP gyms. Framed the games as they were relative to the IP techniques the other coach teaches. ( I DO THIS AT MY GYM QUITE A BIT) Training in an eco manner in a live environment. Make the student aware what the problem is in the technique, the invariant features, and the goal of the technique. Potential issues with not doing exactly what the coach wants you to be doing in IP dominant theory. Transitioning from IP to EcoD. Modulating between the two styles can have cultural implications. Some will be more receptive. Individual based. Approach them in different ways. Some people need the science, others do not. Unorthodox game not fitting into IP concepts of "perfect" technique. It depends vs. I dont know, in regards to answers. Bring eco into an IP gym. Greg Souders is the buzzword. Students have so much fun. Letting the process feel itself out, there is no correct way to implement the approach. Variation in coaching/ design is normal and acceptable. IF PEOPLE ARE HAPPY THEY LEARN MORE. So I ran out of time and have to go to work. Will return to finish notes at some point. Anybody interested, seek out the Eco Discord. Il see you in there. -John (Trigon) Gerondidakis out...

I thought I was too old to open up a school, however with this approach I could see myself coaching into my 90's. There seems to a lot of older people in attendance. Comments or advice?

How would you use this approach in the Gi aspect vs No Gi only? This would be more beneficial as a whole if we can use it in both aspects.
@EcoSubmissionGrappling6 ай бұрын
There is no difference in application depending on the outfit you choose to wear to class. Each will provide different ways to approach and solve problems, but the problems are the same and the goal of the game is still the same.

Is drilling worth doing because it imprints basic movement mechanics into the brain? So when it is met with resistance, the brain has an idea of what to do? Or possibly more wisely to drill the technique briefly and then enter into the live games?

Does any one wonder why its a ”ip” lecture of ecological approach? Why not an ecological approach to improve teaching? Maybe there is still something that is better shared by ”ip” approach :-)😊

I think that there is a balance needed, I understand these people feel very strong about there new method, nothing wrong with that, but you have to be open minded about all ways to train, but if you get so hyped up and say nah this is the be all end all, and now your closed minded and just like people were in the old methods of training, gotta take the good parts of all ways to train, I like this approach and I’ll take the good , without forgetting the past, I like learning moves that I like from talented grapplers, and I also like just finding a way and being creative. Eco guys stay open minded !

Best practices is an undeniable concept. It isn't a matter of open mindedness. If you have a sound argument for the old method or a completely new method of your own, make it. Reality decides what is true, not opinion.

The jiu-jitsu community is so dumb. The arguments for CLA are so strong that it's silly to suggest otherwise. The amount of literature (i.e., peer-reviewed journal articles) is only growing. People are using this model for most professional sports at this point. Even many Olympic coaches have been doing this or have adopted the model.
@highsoflyify6 ай бұрын
@@KodiakCombat Best practice is not under every circumstance the best practice. Did you never got a great result from a very specific detail or information someone told you in a seminar? Sometimes I got instantly some great game changers just from one technique or information I received from world-class coaches and could instantly benefit from it (e.g. arm in guillotines from Josh Hinger). So I think top-down information has its place as well as bottom-up

We are very open-minded. One of the key goals of our community is simply investing our time and energy into learning and advancing the level of coaching and practice design in our sport.
@KodiakCombat6 ай бұрын
@highsoflyify no, you didn't. Until you implemented it under live conditions you got a hypothetical benefit. You're essentially conflating hypothesis with theory or theory with practical use, depending how you use the term "theory."
