Con's are students with belts who come from Traditional Gi schools get trounced and don't like it. They want to go back to their comfort zone of solo-drills, choreographed techniques and ducking the short lived live-training at the end of class. They'll recite quotes from their old instructor, talk about the importance of high repetition static drilling like 5 minutes of shrimping every class or 100 armbar swings every class, yet can't perform either under stress. They miss being able to cruise through a 105 minute class without breaking a sweat. Speaking from experience here.

These are great points and I noticed it too when I used this for my short time coaching too.

I think there can be a balance between the Eco-Approach and providing pathways, “technique”, and examples. This is a really good conversation!

Thank you and I agree!

7:15 the ones in my gym that don't like the approach are all coming from traditional BJJ backgrounds. They're lacking in athleticism, coming off of long periods of stagnation of their game, and are getting beat by total newbies during both simple games and full rounds. Ultimately they're feeling embarrassed by their belt rank, frustrated that they can't complete simple tasks like "Pin Wrist" against resistance and can't understand why new recruits are surpassing and even tapping them after a couple months of training. The hardest part is coming to the acceptance that experience & knowledge ==/== skill. Where I'm at, there isn't another option, so they're sticking it out, and I'm seeing them slowly, very slowly, come around.

I could only imagine how bad I would get stomped going to a full eco gym 🤣

God this is a hilarious thing to debate. Training smart is so much more than an "approach" lol

There will always be a debate on what is the best way to coach 😂

He articulated many cons. He just didn’t understand them as cons. He basically said this teaching approach will not work for the vast majority of people that will walk through the door of a JJ academy. Maybe 10% of people that try JJ want to spar for 45 minutes. Imagine sparring for 45 minutes with no education at all about JJ. I’m sure these people are thrilled with this.

The sport is growing here. Not many black belts but there are some skilled and talented grapplers that I see getting to a high level in the next few years.
