The workshop I'm at doesn't specialise in Euro cars but we do see a lot of them for servicing and repairs, I always get given the more difficult jobs, I don't mind. BMWs really aren't that hard to work on and anyone complaining otherwise needs to update/improve their knowledge and skill set. I'm not "factory trained" by any manufacturer, the internet is an amazing tool and if you're capable of using that in your pursuit of successful outcomes you really shouldn't have problems training yourself. In fact, my trade qualification is as a heavy equipment diesel mechanic, but my passion is not for trucks and earthmoving equipment, I'm a car guy, I made great money over the last 20 years working on the big stuff now I'm just cruising along as a workshop foreman in a general car workshop and I'm the happiest I've ever been.

The truth is that these types of cars are aimed at people who have a lot of money. They are designed with a lot of "plastic" BECAUSE IT IS CHEAPER. Of course they are not going to sell you a cheap BMW, they want to make more money. They make it so complicated for you to turn to their authorized dealers, so that they charge you a lot of money. They use specialized tools, so you have no choice but to turn to these thieves. And when you wear a piece of plastic, it costs you more than gold itself. It's all about making a car "as cheap as possible" and selling it "as expensive as possible." They don't care about quality anymore. But if you like to throw away your money, go a head and buy a car like this.

David Song exactly right! It’s the same with everything new and at first complex, it goes through the ridicule stage because people don’t understand it and that makes them feel stupid, then eventually with time and a deeper understanding of the tech it comes to an acceptance stage. You sound like a BMW apologist. There are established patterns and practices for car maintenance, some have been around for years, some for decades. Designers violate those patterns and practices at their risk and at the manufacturer's risk. In the case of auto manufacturers, the risk is to resale value of their cars and the hit that puts on new car sales. Look at the resale of values of BMW, Mercedes, Bentley, Jaguar and compare them to resale values of Toyota and Lexus. Toyota engineered vehicles usually follow established engineering design patterns so the cars tend to not break and when they do, they're relatively easy and inexpensive to repair => very good resale value. Bottom line: Mechanics hate BMWs because they're difficult and expensive to repair. The fault isn't with the mechanics, its with the designers and engineers who arrogantly assume the world will bend to adjust to their whims.

@pierrecurie51884 жыл бұрын
I disgaree. Most of BMW's engineers and employees aren't driven by the company to make shitty designs intentionally because of greed. Quite the contrary, in fact. Because they create complicated solutions to simple issues (over-engineering), they require a lot of specialized tools and computer-related know-how in order to make things run smoothly. A BMW that's maintained properly (even newer ones from the early 2000s that people call garbage) by a well-trained BMW mechanic, or even by an owner that's willing to do the gritty research, will last as long as any good car. Problems tend to add up when jobs are done half-assed or when issues are ignored for too long. Despite the brittle plastic nature of components being true, there are so many (in the west, at least) trustworthy aftermarket part manufacturers that make sourcing the parts for BMWs hassle free and make parts that are a lot more reliable in the long run. The main issue of BMWs stems from BMWs that are treated like Toyotas. BMWs will only become expensive to maintain when their owners don't know how to and are not willing to learn how to fix things most things themselves and end up paying too much for expensive out of warranty repairs from BMW specialized shops. Each trip adds up to significant amounts if you're not careful. This is like forcing Michael Jordan to play baseball and getting angry at the fact that he's not as good at baseball as he is at basketball. For the car geeks out there, treating a BMW like shit and calling it unreliable is like buying an RX7/RX8 without knowing anything about the oil-metering pump and blaming the Wankel for being unreliable when Apex Seals get obliterated. As an owner of 2 E60s that I've learned to maintain, repair, and program things myself for the last 3 years, I can understand the slight difficulty of maintaining the cars, but the measuring the car's value solely on that does not give it justice whatsoever. KZbinrs like ExoticCar PlayPlace and BMW Doctor make excellent points about this and I hope more future BMW owners would come to understand this because they are great cars and I hate seeing them get the wrong attention for things that aren't their fault.

Pierre Curie I have had the N63TU for 5 years. I have no problems because I pay close and detailed attention to oil, heat, and type of fuel. I also change my oil every 5k instead 12k. I always run premium gas. The key is to pay attention to any abnormal behavior of an engine that is producing 109 hp per liter. To top that this engine is extremely quite, smooth and powerful all at the same time. Yes it runs hot and does burn oil. But that is why you must step up the oil change process. If you can buy a car for 27500 that was 97000+ brand new you have to expect to spend 5k on a extended warranty. Hell I had a 2018 Escalade that stayed in the shop over electrical issues for nearly two months. In my opinion BMW is worth it. They are engineered for performance and excitement. So with that being said you must invest a little attention and a little money for pure performance and perfection.

Thanks and good point Thomas. There is no doubt that much of the design is inherently made to motivate the owner to bring it to the dealer. I see most brands are trying to hold the market with proprietary equipment and tools and I see it with my new Jag as well and I heard that this is consistent with the JLR group and much of modern Euro cars

I'm no mechanic, but I do work in a tire shop at a major retail store. From a tire and battery perspective, BMW's totally suck! Almost always need run flat tires, sizing is always goofy and uncommon, usually require a high speed rating, and sometimes they even are different sizes front and back. With all the shortages on tires going on it can be very hard and sometimes impossible to get someone tires for a BMW. From a battery perspective they are equally as bad. With all the different technological features they come with they need an AGM battery and selecting the right one can be very hard unless the customer comes very prepared with information about their vehicle. I will continue to roll my eyes every time a customer tells me they are looking for tires for their BMW.

Bottom line - these cars are not designed to be easy to service. You need factory trained mechanics, special diagnostics, special tools and factory parts (often of flimsy plastics--but still hideously expensive to buy). Is that an accident? Of course not. BMW wants to make it so that only a BMW dealer (or a BMW specialist garage) can work on them. Dealers make a lot of their money through service and repairs (especially for BMWs!), and BMW is doing their best to make sure that you are locked into using them. Your regular experienced mechanic just won't have the tools, diagnostics and parts to do the job. And the dealer service will be fantastically expensive, especially since the labor involved and parts cost is usually substantial. In fairness to BMW, Mercedes and Audi are almost as bad. Bottom line--don't get locked into BMWs dealer service scam. Get a car that doesn't require a million dollar investment in special training, tools diagnostics and parts in order to repair and maintain.

The only reason I am efficient on BMWs is due to steadily working on them for silly reasons such as brittle timing chain guides or oil pump nuts vibrating loose or rod bearings going bad on select models. Cooling systems are a joke on many of them. How many headliners have you seen that fell down? I really want to like them but they are seriously junk. Today my wife's rear view mirror fell off without warning and radio failed. Sure if you buy a brand new one and keep it for just 3 years then perhaps that person will like them.

BMW's, along with their Euro counterparts, bought mechanics mansions and yachts. Special knowledge can be obtained from Identifix. Special tools have workarounds and applies to all manufacturers. Toyota service manuals have SST (Special Service Tool) all over the place. And thanks to Chinese software like Autel, you can access all the special functions, even remove speed limiters.

Traveler X exactly! No matter how complex something is (or seems) the information and knowledge to understand and repair it is out there for any and all to be had should they desire it. And complexity is relative, usually what we don’t understand seems very complex at first but as your understanding increases the seeming complexity decreases. You are 100% right about special tools having their workarounds, simply look at almost any repair procedure on KZbin and we’ll see multiple workarounds for any supposed specialty tool. Will the specialty tools make the job easier? Absolutely! Are they necessary to do a repair though? No! The problem with people today is they like everything to be easy and require as little thought as possible, anything less makes them feel stupid and incapable and they then in turn attack the brand because they don’t understand it.

Got a BMW Series 1 in 2017. Never raced it, never pushed it too hard, last month the turbo broke, what the hell? Not even three years down the road and the turbo goes out. Luckily I was able to make it to the dealership before the warranty expired. Yeah maybe your old mechanic hates BMWs, and I can see why Scotty always mentions how they are endless money pits, servicing these cars will make a hole in your wallet. You REALLY have to love it to pay servicing it. Maybe a ten year old BMW isn't as hard to service as more recent ones, who knows, but hell I'm never buying one again, now no one will buy it from me at a reasonable price
@ECPP4 жыл бұрын
Sorry to hear that. That sucks for sure. With that said I know of many turbos on various cars that go out because of 2 main reasons. Insufficient p services and not cooling the engi e a minute after a hard run or just coming of a freeway and pulling g into a service station or work or home and turning it off. This can coke a turbo and accelerate wear.

I've owned a number of BMW's, (10) mostly older ones going back to an 1984 3 series, my last one was an '05 E46 M3. Most of them were great cars, not too bad to work on, and decent reliability. Then I bought a one year old 2013 CPO 328i X-Drive for my wife. She loves, but I have been very disappointed to say the least. The steering is numb, handling so so, and there are things that are virtually impossible to maintain. The rear diff and transfer case have no drain plug to change fluid, which like the coolant BMW claims are "lifetime" fluids! What a joke, lifetime only means when it breaks, which will happen earlier because of no maintenance. It is possible to use a suction pump to change the rear diff fluid, but the transfer case is impossible because the case is too tight fitting to the gears. BMW says that you have to pull the case from the car, turn it upside down to get the old fluid out, reinstall and pump new fluid into the fill plug. What kind of morons thought this made sense. The local BMW dealer quoted me $630.00 just to change transfer case fluid. I over-maintaine all my cars, and change the fluids much sooner than recommended, so this really has me upset. Last BMW we will ever have!! I now drive an Audi S-5 and a F150. Soon we're going to get rid of her BMW before it breaks and hopefully I can talk her into a Honda or Toyata/Lexas.

I think the reason general mechanics don't like BMW is because by the time it gets to them the value has dropped to where it doesn't make sense to have the know how and tools because know one is willing to pay for that expertise. BMW's are only worth paying for expert repair service in the first 5-8 years depending on the model

BMW are not made less reliable on purpose, they are just lazy and don’t do enough testing of new designs and quality control. When Toyota worked with BMW for the new Supra the BMW engineers were amazed how sticklers Toyota was in getting it right and made them re-engineer many parts for durability and quality. I would imagine the new Z4 will be a much better car for this.

@@ECPP Too bad the proper maintenance on it will cost about 4x as much as it would a Lexus in the same amount of time owning them. Personally I crap on anything that does the same thing something else can do at five times the cost and the headache of having to depend on someone else to fix it. I would never spend that much money on a car that demanded I keep spending more on it to keep it running well. I will tell you this much: when I bought a car, I bought a Honda because I had never seen one on the side of the road with the hood up and bellowing smoke out of the engine while the ownere gaped at it. They may be out there with the muffler held on with duct tape or three different colors of primer on various quarter panels, but they RUN. And they run FOREVER despite the abuse they receive. THAT I would pay a premium for and it's a lot less costly than the premium status BMW that is currently sitting in my yard that won't start.

Great insights into why your run-of-the-mill mechanics hate Bimmers! Having owned several Bimmers in the past and still have 2 today, I would offer different advice to my friends who aspire to own a Bimmer for the first time. Generally speaking, there are 2 types of people who would like to own a Bimmer (1) those who care more about the brand prestige and (2) those who are true enthusiasts. For the first type, I would advise them to find the most attractive leasing deal and not be concerned about the after-warranty service & repair headache. For the 2nd type, since they'll spend all the time and disposable income in their Bimmers, I would recommend them finding out which year model has promising longevity and maybe even future collectability. Obviously, this will require them to be either handy or know some independent BMW specialists to work on their Bimmers. Sadly to say, now days very few Bimmers are worthwhile to own for the long run.

Great thoughts and thanks for mentioning for the viewers. I find typically the only collectable are the M cars only no SUVs and some of the older naturally aspirated cars mainly with the legendary drivetrains and usually matched to a manual gearbox.
