BMW's reliability has certainly improved significantly. I had the 730 D (2017), which I sold in 2023. It had only one electrical problem, and BMW fixed it for free. Otherwise, it had a zero issue. I sold it because I moved from the UK to Canada. I had always felt you were overly critical in your review of European cars. That's why I stopped watching your program.

Mark, I've been following your channel for a few years now, and I'm very happy to say that your advice on BMW's have been spot on. I have a 2016 7 series 740i with the b-58 engine. It's been a great ride. No problems. I intend to keep it for at least 4 to 5 more years. This is due partly because you have educated me on my B-58 engine, Thank You so much for that. Thanks for sharing, and appreciate the vulnerability. Really enjoy your channel! In a similar spot. Was gifted two BMW’s from family members in past. 1997 528i (poorly taken care of) and 2001 540i (meticulously well taken care of) both at around 100k. At that point, as with any car, can become money pits real quick. The 528i was especially. Swore off BMW and bought 2010 GS350 awd in 2013. Been a real treat for all reasons mentioned in your previous videos, but now 180k on 13 yr old car. Now Debating 2020-21 GX460 or BMW X5 (b58), and gone back and forth. At end of day I think ride is better in BMW and we shall see… but as someone once said “life’s to busy to drive boring cars!”

Mark, it takes a CLASS act to admit being wrong. I currently have 3 BMWs, a 750i, Z4 M 40i and a XB7, all newer versions and they have been totally reliable They are all VERY complex machines so there is a lot to go wrong. . I had an X7 for three years and the only problem I ever had with it was the start stop cancel switch died. I've had all the German Ultra luxury brands plus a Rolls and have had more problems with the Rolls and several Mercedes than I've ever had with my BMWs. None of the other brands has been as satisfying to drive as the BMWs and that includes the Porsche's I've had. I just read the BMWs reiability was third only to Lexus and Toyota. Better than all the other German brands. Don't give up on them yet as the newer versions are truly outstanding cars, much better than the prior versions.

I don’t own a BMW, Toyota or Honda, but Toyota and Honda get free passes. My dad was saying Toyota is the best, and he had a new Rav 4. It had this awful leaking problem, brand new, and the floor of the back kept getting soaked. He tried to get Toyota to fix it and it kept happening. When I brought it up, he was like, “well, things happen.” But dad, when any other brand has a problem like that, it’s crap?! We had a good laugh after, and we agreed ALL brands have their problems. My dad now owns his first Subaru 😊. In the next 12 months, I might get my first BMW.

I had the X2 a couple of years ago with no issues, then the X3M40i and loved it. Now I just bought a X4M40i that I had built. No issues with any of them and honestly I feel like BMW is the most fun and exciting, or at least one of the most exciting. I had a new 2023 Porsche Macan which just didn't have the power of my BMW's. I tried the Macan S with the twin turbo V6 and it had no where near the power and acceleration of the BMW. I also feel like BMW is the most reliable of the German brands. True that Toyota and Lexus are reliable and last a long time, but they are also a little boring. In a day and age where everyone is going to the 2.0 turbo 4's, it is nice to still have the choice of buying a true driver's car. Great video and I appreciate your honesty and as always, enjoy your videos and the great info that you provide.

Very humble of you for doing this with great humility. You know when I was in my German class my teacher told me the general philosophy of German engineering is being innovative. They will find out the kinks in the first couple generations and refine upon it. Germans love to work on problem solving and this is what I see from BMW. Only time may tell but we are truly blessed with the current generation of BMW's because of how refined they are. They are much more reliable and do not rely on another company ex. Audi -> VW. At the end of the day for me, get the car you want and invest/research if you really want to own it. I really love the F82 gen but knowing yes it's very reliable, I wouldn't want to get my hands on the S55. But instead I'd rather go on the G80 with the S58 because I can realistically see myself working on that car. As you look through the BMW generations you'll see risk and improvement on reliability based on the risk they took. Thank you for the wonderful channel and being true to yourself.

Since 2005, most German cars have become to mechanically and electronically complicated and hence problems compared to Toyota, Lexus, Honda and Mazda. When you get older you realise the ultimate car for reliability is a boring Toyota Corolla 1800cc 6 speed manual. I see them in Thailand doing 1 Million kms (620,000 miles) on the same engine and gearbox. No German car will do that.

I think people see the high performance ones like the 335i or M3 and automatically think all beamers are unreliable and break down. I don't believe bmw builds them to be unreliable on purpose. Naturally aspirated bmws are great fun daily drivers.

I agree. My 2019 BMW X1 has been bulletproof. Yes, it requires premium fuel and synthetic oil. Yes, new brakes are pricey. But that's a small price to pay for an SUV that's a mountain goat in the snow, handles corners with little to no body roll, refined - yet utilitarian cabin, ample boot space, and compact enough to handle tight spaces and a small garage.

Hi Mark, my wife and I have the same feeling. We traded in our 2008 323i at 145,000Kms last 2022 for a new 22 AWD Rav4 due to the fact the we got hit by the reality of new car shortages and parts shortages. At present we are looking to add another BMW together with our RAV. Lol. My wife really cried when we traded in the 3 series. It was trouble free for 145,000kms / 10 years with us, we used it daily and even during frigid Edmonton winters. Over its life we had one set of brakes at around 60,000KMS, new plug and coils and valve cover gasket at 93,000Kms, new waterpump at 105,000KMS, and a new starter at 120,000Kms when the -45C edmonton winter killed it in 2021. Thats basically all it had. it has the N52B25 200hp I6 oil changed every spring/summer and fall/winter with recommended BMW LL01. Our 2022 Rav was quite interesting as within 90 days of ownership the outside passenger side B pillar moulding had warped. 6 months later the sun visor went squeaky every time we opened it. (i guess its more of a material quality thing.) and in just the recent couple of months, we had a electronic power steering low voltage warning and electrical gremlins. To top it all off, at 17 months old the car died outside rogers arena this summer while parked, had to be boosted due to some unknown electrical drain. We love our Rav as well for daily but we weren’t expecting that its gonna act up more than our previous BMW being it a new vehicle hence toyotas reputation for reliability. Now the rav seems fine but we are fearful to activate the auto/startstop feature as it might leave us stranded in the middle of the road. Now we are on a hunt for a good deal on a used 2017 and up BMW. Cheers!

No you’re not wrong about the buck tooth grille. The reason is that you simply don’t slap on a design from the old 6 series hoping it “will work” when in fact the designers needed to EVOLVE the damn buck tooth grille, not time travel and slap it on. Or, should have stuck with the buck tooth from way back and evolved it like Bugatti did. That’s why it’s so damn polarizing. I must say the build quality YEA it’s a major major improvement and is top notch these days. But the grille .. some things are better left in the past.

From what I've seen you usually zero in on certain models and/or years when describing their short comings. While I don't always agree with your assessments (from personal experience) you're generally spot on. The only thing you MAY be wrong about is IF you lump the whole brand in for the faults of particular models/engines/years, which I rarely see you do.
@andrewbulock
@andrewbulock 5 ай бұрын
My first (current) new car is a 2015 E84 X1. I knew going in that anything after the warranty would be "winging it,' so to speak. The plan was generally 10 years/100k miles if all goes well. Selling points vs. similarly priced volume cars were better fuel economy, better engine/transmission/chassis, rear wheel drive, 4 years/50k warranty and free maintenance (vs 3 years with others), and a usually a better dealership/service experience. I could have had a Ford with a crappy infotainment screen that probably would have lost the transmission by now or I could forego the screen and have something that's actually nice to drive... I'm going through something with this car ownership that's like a midlife crisis. This is my new car, but it's not "new" anymore. It was problem-free throughout the warranty. In following years, some minor but annoying issues came up. Radiator. Front and rear washer fluid pumps. Intercooler leak. The one that hurts now though is the sunroof shade. That's the only thing that I've left broken and it's killing me because this was "new" and I let it happen. That job to fix it though... I don't have any real complaints about the car itself. It's the last model year of its generation, so it was as sorted out as it was going to be. It drives like it did when it was new and I have about 65k on it now. It's a great place to be and with depreciation, I could never get anything nearly as nice for what this thing is worth today. The issue, which you touched on, is the dealership/service model. I don't think it's the engineering of at least the "daily" cars that's the problem. It's the dealership model of outrageous parts markups and labor rates. I've usually just sucked it up because I want it done right, but I was just quoted $3400 to replace front struts or $2700 using "aftermarket" (probably OE/OEM) parts. I'm not willing to put up with that, so now I'm getting a quote from a local guy or I might just do it myself. Those numbers for that job are just insulting. That's fine for warranty repair and leases, but I'm not going to put up with that and be punished just for keeping and maintaining my paid-off car like a responsible person. So... It's not "new" anymore and it's not going to go to the dealer for everything. I'm going to have to find a "guy" or two and dust off the tools I used on my E30. I don't particularly want to work on my car, but I also don't want to pay $3400 to have rocket scientists in a clean room replace the same struts that I can get or under $400 for the pair except with a "Bilstein" sticker instead of a "BMW" sticker. I really hope that sticker doesn't affect the car's handling, but I'm going to have to risk it at this point.

Strategy is best complex - singular and variables - to make greatest learning leaps and bounds - every company does that differently. I think they've tried new things maybe not too much but too long? With so much data - will what works (don't fix it) be ok to the majority of consumers or do they prefer style vs reliability? My 07 3xi is doing pretty well. How can I get a better one without issues and $ I'd rather put towards more reliable options vs lifetime cost and ease to maintain that vehicle myself. Thanks!

The problem for me is that I know a lot of BMW owners that have had some serious issues with oil and coolant leaks. So, I watched your videos and compared your comments with those of my friends who have had issues and I conclude there is a reliability issue with certain engines. The sanity check for me has always been the favorable things you've said about the B58 engine. That's important to me because I am interested in buying a new BMW sometime this year. Along with your input, I've added feedback from other credible reviewers and I have concluded that BMW's reliability reputation has improved and I am willing to swap my MB E350 for a sportier handling BMW. You are a credible reviewer and I think BMW is a fine car company that has, in the past, put the "ultimate driving machine" objective ahead of everything else. So, in my view you weren't wrong to call it as you have experienced it but it doesn't hurt to acknowledge how far BMW reliability has come. As you say: time will tell.

Just tell it like what it is. Later BMWs have built-in expiry date. No point of a bulletproof engine when everything around it fails in quick time.

The newer motors have been a big change historically. I know BMW wanted to make a big change about how theyre viewed reliability wise and the B58 motor is both in a Toyota and numerous other BMWs. I had a NAV screen and a oil sensor and a pulley replaced under warranty - I replaced a visor ( drivers side ) however I always change my oil 2 or 3 Km before I need to - also I don’t drive like a crazed person to overheat the turbo - the fuel economy is amazing - it feels like a Toyota Corolla. That’s why I could never understand the talk about BMW reliability - perhaps they started getting better by 2014..? ??

I think most of the GDI + turbo engines are prone to failure after 100k miles. Just too much pressure and most engine makers just don’t design properly for it. Let’s see if Honda 1.5 turbos hold up as long as the naturally aspirated ones. I really doubt it.

Regarding any car manufacture...we must have in mind that not all the components are made or fully controlled by them (if you will look on a idrive headunit...you willl find that is built by the same manufacture as a from other car brands....brakes the same, displays the same...wiring the same, damping isolator the same ...etc etc) . Is exactly as comparing 996 carrera with 996 Turbo. In conclusion?...Yes, I think you will get a newer BMW.
