Tom Reed didn't get some of the lucky breaks while he was at State between 1983 and 1985. He had sporadic wins in the conference that was dominated at that time by Clemson, Maryland and arch rival North Carolina until he was replaced by former Furman head coach Dick Sheridan who would bring in the iconic "nSc" logo in 1986. In this game, East Carolina had stars from both the NFL and CFL, Earnest Byner, who won Super Bowl XXVI with the Washington Football Team in 1991 and was one of the Original Baltimore Ravens in 1996 when the original Browns left Cleveland. Henry "Gizmo" Williams became a special teams star in the Canadian Football League with the Edmonton Elks (formerly the Eskimos) and Grey Cup winner and was a multiple time CFL Western Division All-Star for his kick and punt returns and known in Canada by doing front flips after scoring.
