So, not to be a dick but, my dad & his buddy built BB/GD's from scratch in the 60's & early 70's that ran low 7's at 180mph in the 1/4mi on gas w/a cast iron 392 Hemi w/a 6-71 blower. I rode in the push vehicle when I was 5-6yrs old. They built them from the ground up BTW. Even built their trailers they carried it on. We had one of them in our back yard for years. Back when brains beat money. Miss those days.

I'm surprised that more dragsters don't have the engine up front like that. You'd think it's better, since it would allow more acceleration before the front end lifts up off the road. But then I guess having the engine at the back puts more weight on the rear tires, so they get more grip. Maybe that's more important.
@manbird21844 жыл бұрын
Also if there's a fire or explosion it will be directly in front of you. In a top fuel dragster your protected from the engine fire since its behind you. That's why ( in my opinion ) top fuels are safer
@branon65653 жыл бұрын
This is the original layout of the car from when NHRA top fuel began, but even with a scatter shield, drivers would still be seriously injured when a motor grenaded...
@k0namiman Жыл бұрын
necroposting, but, there's a reason dragsters moved from this layout to rear engine. Plenty of racers had their ankles sawn off by exploding clutches and grenading engines.

when starting an injected car it does not help to play with throttle, there is no fuel at the barrel valve and you are only letting more air into the engine evaporativing the alchohol. have the guy with the bottle squirt more in the bottom of the flys

How long can you run the engine before it overheats, given that there's no radiator? Do these engines run piston cooling oil jets? What kind of gearbox is that, like a dog box or a manual shift auto (epicyclic gears)?
@dustinwalden70914 жыл бұрын
James Eastwood these run on methanol which actually helps cool the engine. Now I wouldn’t go to a drive thru on it but you can run for much longer than on gas.
@dustinwalden70914 жыл бұрын
Also probably just a powerglide trans.
@davidkeeton67163 жыл бұрын
An alcohol engine can actually cool down on a hard pass. I've had it happen many times. Also at the end of a hard pass ice can form on the outside of the intake manifold, if not it's usually very cold. I used to lean the mixture out by partially pulling the fuel shutoff cable and opening a valve that created a vacuum leak on the intake manifold to make the engine build back heat in it on the return road, and keep the hood closed as much as possible between rounds to keep heat in the engine. Talk to someone at the track that runs an alcohol door slammer.
