This was filmed less than 4 months before his death. What a wonderful thing to see him still showing his class and energy even then. Thanks so much for posting this!

They don't make 'em like Ed Shaughnessy anymore. Most drumming role models today, they are... different. Some of them are even tremendous drumming machines, who like to market themselves as role models. RIP Ed Shaughnessy.

I was attending a Modern Drummer Festival late 90's in New Jersey, packed house, walking the isle was Mr Shaughnessy looking for a seat just before the Jeff Hamilton performance. There was a seat open next to me. I yelled out, "Ed, right here!" He sat down next to me and we watched Jeff together. We chatted a bit during and especially afterwards and I will forever remember feeling like I was sitting next to an encyclopedia of knowledge and experience. A true gentleman and generous fellow drummer. Even to this day, when I see or listen to Jeff Hamilton I feel the presence of Ed Shaughnessy. Thank You Sir! Forever remembered.

Since this video has been posted, I've watched several times. Tear up about everytime I do, great guy Ed Shaughnessy. Biggest thrill of my life, back in 1973 or 74, Mr. Shaughnessy was the featured guest artist at a concert with the famed 1 0'Clock "Lab" Band at North Texas State University. My father, a band director and former professional drummer and I were in attendance. Dad was a friend and former college roomate of the Leon Breeden, director of the Jazz Bands at N.T.S.U. After a great performance we were back stage and got to meet Ed. When Mr. Breeden introduced us to Ed, he told him "Ed this is my old college pal and buddy Grady Barnes and his son Alan. They are both drummers." I swear this is exactly what Mr. Shaughnessy said after the introduction: "Grady Barnes, Grady Barnes...were you playing around 52nd St in the city back in 194?, I remember watching you play?" (he named some musicians) Dad said "yeah, I was playing around there right before I went into the Army." I COULD NOT BELIEVE THIS!!!! Ed Shaughnessy!!! The guy I watched everynight before I went to sleep and idolize on the Tonight Show Band, remembered my Dad. Don't know if that was all true or Mr. Breeden just set it up so his old college pal and former bandmate's son would be impressed about his own father. Later that evening we got to hang out at Leon's house for an after concert party where Ed and Dad got to visit some more. Great musician, great educator, great guy Ed Shaughnessy, miss him. Thank you Mr. Famularo and all involved with The Sessions, enjoy the series of interviews. All Good Things

I almost had goosebumps reading your story Alan. I was a junior in high school when my band director took three other senior students and myself to the Texas Music Education Association (TMEA) in Houston back in the February of 1971. Ed Shaughnessy was the guest artist with the North Texas State University band as his back up. His playing caused me to have goosebumps for all the tricks he did on his set. He was a great speaker and player! I will never forget that great time I had!
