One of the great things about Sheeran is that he takes beautiful old traditional songs, like this and “The Parting Glass”, and makes them cool for young people to listen to. They’d probably never hear them otherwise. And maybe it gives them an appetite for more great older music. He also has a wonderful voice, of course.

I Like it, Wild Mountain Thyme" (also known as "Purple Heather" and "Will Ye Go, Lassie, Go?") is a folk song written by Francis McPeake, a member of a well known musical family in Belfast, Ireland, and of Scottish origin.[1] McPeake's lyrics are a variant of the song "The Braes of Balquhither" by Scottish poet Robert Tannahill (1774-1810), a contemporary of Robert Burns. Tannahill's original song, first published in Robert Archibald Smith's Scottish Minstrel (1821-24), is about the hills (braes) around Balquhidder nearLochearnhead. Like Burns, Tannahill collected and adapted traditional songs, and "The Braes of Balquhither" may have been based on the traditional song "The Braes o' Bowhether".

I am curious as to what people here consider the 'original' version? It is basically an, at least, 200 year old folk song from Scotland which has slowly been edited and adapted by countless artists. Cannot he did a version of this!! This song is so special to me - My late grandfather Barry died back in 2009 on St Patrick’s Day - He was one hundred percent Irish - I was only 7 when he died and didn’t see him a whole lot because he lived in Connecticut and I live in Virginia - It sucks and is so devastating that I don’t remember much about him and that he isn’t here to watch me grow up - I am 21 now and it still doesn’t quit hurting - every year on St Patrick’s day my mom , her mom and her sisters meet up in Spring Lake, NJ to celebrate and honor my grandpa’s life - they all go out to St. Stephen’s Irish Pub and there is a band called The Snakes that play there every year on St. Patrick’s Day - or St. Barry’s Day which is what my mom and her family call it - and play Wild Mountain Thyme in honor of my grandpa and they always say “this is for Barry’s Girls” - Miss you Pop Pop - May you Go Lassie Go and may your Irish eyes always be smiling through 💚🧡🇮🇪☘️
