ed torian was one of the best bits on the show. what made the bit great was that ed was the bit, but he didnt know it. his constant giggling and flubbing of the questions, enormous graph paper, and general unprofessionalism despite being a "world reknowned polygrapher" and taking himself so seriously is what makes the bit funny. "did you ever, eh, pleasure yourself while clothes shopping with henry rollins, crossing your mind?"

Ed was hilarious but he actually was very reputable. I think he was retired for a bit when he started doing the show and real polygraphs are conducted with closed short yes no questions not the kind of compound ambiguous type that Howard directed him to ask. And they are usually off a script made in advance. Remember too the guy had a sense of humor and Howards questions made him laugh.

6:04:00 begins Artie's classic Ed Torian impersonation. I laugh harder every time he says things like "Do ya wanna bang me, Ed Torian?" Or "aaah, yeah. He was bein' deceptive on that one, Howard." This show was hands down the funniest piece of media on at the time. I'd say the early 90s, around the time Billy is around, till 2008 or 09, the caveat to 09 being the obvious and embarrassing progressing of Artie's spiral down the drain. Wherever ya are, Art, I hope you've found even just a small amount of peace in this world. I'll ride an Otis elevator with ya any day of the week, brother.

They weren't paying him and then it seems like when they were making him test the entire staff and the results were clearly being skewed so that everyone on the staff is coincidentally gay except Howard, he started asking to be paid for his appearances and I don't think he was on much after that. It’s interesting that 90% of the time the most incriminating, embarrassing question that whoever being tested denies always ends up being a lie. There’s no way that that many people would have hidden that many outrageous lies. This is the one bit that I’m sure there’s a lot of BS to it. And it’s always the question they get caught “lying” about that would create the most drama and entertainment. Hey, it’s a great listen but to any gullible enough to believe it’s all 100% real, you’re crazy. Just like when they bring on the hypnotist and you can clearly tell how bad the acting is for radio. Notice Howard never participated in these sort of things. He’s not going to act and pretend on his own show. I just can’t enjoy it as much as I want knowing it’s BS.

I can't figure out whether Howard was too stupid to realize that Ed Torian was a fraud, or if he did know it and used it as a tool to easily start fights for a bit.

Whatever was the genesis of the test, the biggest embarrassment that could come from it was always the case. It just seemed like the test was always designed to be as shocking and funny as possible, which is best case scenario for a radio show. That’s what leads me to believe it’s definitely scripted behind the scenes. Not necessarily that everyone is in on it. Just the key people in charge of it.
