The village of Edam is only about 30 minutes north of Amsterdam, so we decided to make the trip and see what there is to see! There was of course, CHEESE. Also a very cool museum, a fluffy cat and some amazing architecture.
We had a great day, and of course found some cheese to take home and maybe some for lunch as well!

✼ ABOUT US ✼
We are Nate and Katrina, two Americans living in Amsterdam, The Netherlands and traveling as much as we can to see what there is to see! Call us expats, immigrants, whatever... just call us already.
We balance work life with travel... as best we can! We would love to visit every country in Europe while we live here, and definitely keep a list of our global “must visit” destinations.
We try to give you a true view of us and how we travel and explore the world. Lots of food, definitely some jokes, and probably some swearing…. Hope you enjoy taking these trips with us!

That wasn't a tosti, it was just a dry sandwich with ham and cheese, i definitely would have sent it back! You still have to try the Old Amsterdam Bitterballen, no ragu just cheese! 😋✌🏻

"Old Amsterdam" cheese is a hoax, fake. They make young cheese look and taste old with chemicals. But hey, to each their own.

@@Jan.Folkersma If something is tasty, and people enjoy eating it - let them enjoy doing so. You make it sound like this stuff is toxic waste. Its a delicious style of cheese made using modern methods.

Very nice video, nice that you show that there is more than just Gouda cheese, and the floating cellar was absolutely great thanks again for your time and effort

Edam is so small and yet you manged to make a great video about it. Respect! This Dutchie had never heard about floating cellars before. I am from Appingedam so hanging kitchens ok. But these, no. Thanks for that. I guess when you live in a cute village like this, you had better like tourists. You are not simple people. Loved the black cat. And the doggy in the window. Sleeping 'cubbies' are called in Dutch "Bedstee" (pronounce Bed stay) meaning: the place to sleep. Keep it up. 7,4k.

Actually, people slept in a sitting position. That's why they are so short.

19:50 Village ? VILLAGE? Excuse me? Count Willem V granted the town city rights all the way back in 1357! In that time that was actually quite important because it gave the place some autonomy over the ruling nobility. Right now in 2024 it is still a somewhat relevant point because Edam shares the same municipality with nearby Volendam. Volendam never got city rights, it always very much was a fishing village. However over the course of the last centuries Volendam grew much larger than Edam so its people are really not happy the municipality is officially called Edam-Volendam. Officials state that the order of the names is merely alphabetical and has nothing to do with the fact that historically Edam was a much more important place than Volendam. Do we believe them? Or do they just say this to avoid any further conflict? We might never know the truth!

Great video! It's been over 40 years now since I moved to America but I still visit my family there. I remember going to that museum with my then future wife and she was just amazed at all the things there. She, unfortunately, passed away but she fell in love with The Netherlands. (and me..) Also, the E is pronounced as an A. So it would be A-Dam.

Oh by the way, pedantry incoming : A carillion is simply a musical instrument, consisting of bells. The tower has nothing to do with it, although carillions are usually located in a (church) tower. This one in Edam is quite hilarious because sometimes it plays random pop music tunes that have nothing to do with anything. So the tower is not the carillion, its a carrillion tower because its a tower with a carillion... right? right!

I was under the impression this was a family friendly channel with the focus on education outta love you two have for children. So why no disclaimer at the start for what nate was going to do to the cow? 4 Hours later and im still blushing! Please take this in consideration for the next video. Ps im wondering, did the cow ask for nate's phone number afterwards?

Did they also tell you about the proper cheese knives to use for old vs new cheese? if someone is just picking a piece of cheese with his hands rather than using the tongue, that is in fact safer: everybody touches the tongue. It is a biohazard

Hi Nate and Katrina, glad to see you have arrived in Europe. Yes, Holland is known for its good cheese but also for other delicacies. It is our advantage here that we can use our free time to visit other countries or cities to discover unknown things. Europe has so much to offer in terms of sights, other cultures, other delicacies and food. I hope you enjoy what you are interested in and expand your knowledge about Europe, have fun. Greetings from Germany

Henri Willig has no history. It is a brand that was established in the seventies. They do not produce all the different kinds of cheese themselves but made business agreements with several Dutch farmers and producers. They exploit the business for mainly touristic marketing and sales. That's why they sell all kinds of colours and flavors of cheese that are not traditional and just for the tourists. Because some type of customers want to customize their food. (Ehhhmmm where would those people come from???? 🤔🤔)

Had a few Henri Willig at one point and was quite disappointed. It tasted below average, and was quite pricey and gimmicky.
