I have many knives, but I have settled on my daily norm of what I find useful and comfortable. On the construction site I carry an ESEE Avispa or my Ontario Rat 1 in S35VN. In my EDC off-the-site I carry my Spyderco Paramilitary 2. I always keep my Victorinox Hercules (Swiss Army Knife) nearby even if it is not "on me." I also keep my BK62 Kephart knife and PKS Scorpion in my vehicle just in case I'm out-and-about and get stranded; I will have a couple good full-tang fix blades on me.

I have a Clinch Pick for self-defense. I don't expect to ever use it in that situation, but it's a cool tool, and training with it adds a fun element to my wrestling and jiu-jitsu practice. It's intended to be a space-maker so that I can access my pistol or OC spray, and that's how I train with it. As an EDC tool, I carry a very basic, very cheap, folding utility knife that uses a disposable blade. Most of the stuff that most of us are cutting on a regular basis are paper/cardboard covered with tape or glue, and that stuff gunks up a blade. I don't want to clean that regularly, or worry about keeping it sharp. I'd much rather just toss out a blade and replace it. Now, I do keep a good fixed-blade knife in my truck, in my office, in my house, in my shop... places that I regularly spend time, and am typically close to. If I'm in a role that makes sense to have a knife all the time, I do, and I select the tool that makes the most sense for the job I'm out to do.

Since I got my first knife as a boy, I've always carried one. It's an essential tool. Can it be used as a weapon? Sure. Then, almost anything can. I use my knives every day for various cutting tasks. A knife is much more than a weapon.

Me too. I was given a long folder ( 4") as a promotional gift in junior high; it carried perfectly next to my wallet in my back pocket for years. As a carpenter/contractor for a couple of decades, I found I used a knife as much as I used a hammer. First tool to come out of the Stone Age? A knife, I'm guessing.

As a martial artist who carries a pocket knife, people always assume it's for knife fighting. When they ask if I've ever had to use it, I like to say "yes, this morning I'm fact......to cut open an Amazon package." Freaks them out for just a second. And can sometimes lead to a nice realization that no object is inherently a weapon.

I mean, some objects are inherently weapons. A hand gun is inherently a weapon; as is a sword. You're not generally using those for utility; you could, but that's not their express intention.
@bbasiaga
@bbasiaga Жыл бұрын
@jaykwonzzz I have owned firearms for decades and never used one as a weapon. Target practice, competition, sure. They are only weapons when someone applies THEIR own will to make them one. The object itself has no will, it can be defined only by the beholder's will.
@babyreps365
@babyreps365 Жыл бұрын
@@bbasiaga well said my friend a five foot chunk of 2x2 lumber could be used as a weapon. But as it sits in my garage in the corner it's not looked at as a weapon or can do anything harm on it's own.
@jaykwonzzz
@jaykwonzzz Жыл бұрын
@@bbasiaga Incorrect. There is intent behind the creation of an item as well. I am not attributing will to an inanimate object. To suggest an object like an AR or a sword are built for any other reason that primarily a weapon is just ignoring facts. Go read the history of the AR-15 or the AK-47 and tell me those objects aren't inherently weapons. Any peripheral use is either practice or simulated combat (shooting competitions are absolutely simulated combat). It's like saying brass knuckles or slapjacks aren't inherently weapons because you can own them for novelty purposes, or that an expandable baton isn't a weapon because you can also use it to bust out a window. What about a taser? How is that anything but a weapon?

@clownishbehavior constitutional carry state, if you can legally own a weapon, you are automatically legally allowed to carry a concealed weapon. Other states, such as California where I moved from, you have to have a permit to carry a concealed weapon. The problem is they use the permitting in order to not allow a good citizen to carry a firearm to protect themselves. They create a back log, hold your rights, charge you a bunch of money, make you take off work to go the classes. Etc, etc...they basically use the laws in order to strip a citizen of the God given rights to self protection... you got it? Good question!

Like eight years ago, when I was still in college, I got really into knives. I had been carrying a pocket knife since I was around ten, and always liked them, but as a young adult I became obsessed with them. The different steels, blade geometries, handle designs, locking mechanisms, blade finishes… everything about knives was interesting to me. I even became obsessed with sharpening my own knives. I started with budget friendly Benchmades and Spydercos, until I landed my first job… I was buying 2-3 good knives per month, and soon built up a collection of incredible knives. Zero safe queens; all users. This went on for a couple of years. As my career progressed, and as I grew as a father and a man, I stopped buying knives for myself. In the past three years, I’ve only bought two knives for myself; all of my other knife purchases have been gifts for family members and friends. I got into pews six years ago, and started only with a single handpew that I carried for a few years… then a couple of years ago I got into longpews… And though I still really enjoy my knives, I really do wish I would’ve collected pews and boolits before I spent thousands of dollars on my knife collection/obsession… Live, and learn!!

I was born and raised in the most fk up places, gang infested neighborhood, I've seen people get shot and killed, I've seen someone breathe their last breath. Victim of numerous drive by shootings, I've had a gun put to my head, lucky to be alive. This happened in the good old USA. I don't own hand guns. I don't carry firearms, but I do carry a knife every single day. I suffer from hyper awareness due to the decades I survived living where I lived. I don't seek trouble, stay away from it, I can read where trouble is brewing and make my way out and away from these situations. If I ever ended up using my knife, they would feel it before they see it. Stay frosty and stay vigilant in today's world.

I usually carry an Esee Izula in S35v or the 1095 version or the Esee 3 or CR 2.5 a Leatherman or Victorinox, a light and a pistol but I have switched to just using a Garmin Instinct watch... I have one dress watch that gets worn once or twice a year but its the Garmin everyday.

with respect, a lot of cops have never been in a gun fight, a lot of military have never been in a gun fight, and a lot of people who train knife fighting have never been in a knife fight lol. That includes people in the philippines. Still useful knowledge. People who teach shooting fundamentals or compete in competitions may or may not have been in gun fights (but probably unlikely), but still valuable lessons.

Gotta love the knifes, I always carry two, strong hand is usually 3 1/2" folder spring assist, really used for opening boxes and such. The weak hand is a ESEE PR4 it is a 4 " fixed blade, thin handle profile which contributes to concealment ability. I carry it on the left side inside the waistband, it draws easily when pulled forward and downward to clear the shirt. I orginally carried it appendix left side opposite of my handgun which is right side appendix. The problem I found when I would draw my blade from concealed appendix with my weak hand to, (let's say to defend my handgun), there was a sewing machine effect when trying to clear the shirt. I would first draw the knife upward, the knife would get caught under shirt having to then go downward to clear the shirt, then upward to handle the threat. This becomes very dangerous with a sharp blade in the groin area in a confortation under stress. For me the left side carry is very comfortable, and conceal-able, as long as I do not grab any shirt on the draw, it is one smooth motion. Just to clarify, I draw the knife with the blade inward , tip down, this allows me to just use a gross movement of drawing the knife, then going upward and coming down and pulling inward over the opponents wrist, or hands. The reason I choose the ESEE PR4 is because of its ability to be more than just a defense blade, it also plays a roll for camp, skinning, bushcraft, or whatever, and for me it has a classic feel. Is it for everyone, well no, but for me the design contributes to ease of carry, so I alway have it on me. So why carry a defensive knife? Well first a defensive knife should be a fix blade, why? Try and draw a folder with the weak hand, if someone grabs your gun in the holster, or when you have drawn it and can't get that shot off. It is slow at best, if not impossible in an actual conflict. If you have ever been in a situation where someone attacks and tries to take your weapon, it can be extremely quick, so quick that your just trying process what happened. Split seconds matter, training matters, and proper equipment matters. For me I never plan on getting into a knife fight, it is just used to get my gun in use if needed. In all reality getting the opponent of my gun with the knife, most likely will be end of the fight. Just my two cents. Great video, nessisary subject matter, thanks for sharing.

Colonel Blade folder. Where I live/work concealed carry isn’t legal. I determined that the Colonel Blade Folder is the most natural (all one essentially has to do is hold it and throw punches) last resort self-defense blade I could carry… thankfully all I do with it though is open boxes. May it ever be so. 🙏 I have several others as many of us do. I use something different when upland hunting to clean birds, and always have a Victorinox Swiss Army Trekker on my person or in my EDC bag and switched out the toothpick for a little ferro rod that fits in that slot.

I think open carry of fixed blades is legal if they're visible. If knives are going to have restrictions like guns, why doesn't a carry permit also cover knives? If I can carry 44 magnum, why can't I conceal a 6" fixed blade knife? The injustice!

Each has a purpose and mall ninja ain't it. The basic survival kit in the vehicle has a fixed blade and in the front console another Trekker, plain blade this time. Oops, forgot the slim, Muela Fury friction folder on the back of the pouch in my cargo pocket. It looks like a fancy Lagouile, but it's actually just a gilded friction fit. That is the really important one. It's for food targets of opportunity. Somebody has some summer or dried sausage that needs cutting, some steaks, fresh fruit, etc. Share and I am there to assist. LOL.

Thanks for your service. Also a veteran. We fought to give us the freedom to waste 9 minutes of our lives on videos like this. I mean I liked it, but it was just semi useless information unless you’re a teenager and if you are, you probably got gifted a pocket knife or got someone to buy you one at Walmart/have a knife set for hunting. I like everything on that table though. Really not trying to hate, but this seems more like an advertisement than anything

Man I felt the part about losing knives. I actually lost that same Kershaw (Blur) he has there, AND the Kershaw Leek as well. Thats one reason I am hesitant to get a Microtech, Benchmade, or Emerson for EDC. Im scared I will lose them. I clip my knives to the pocket and still wind up losing them. Must not be doing something right....

I dont understand how that happens, i clip mine to my pockets/belt and go out and skateboard and still have the knife clipped on me when i need it.

What’s the fixed blade you have in the thumbnail pic? Looks almost like the Amtac Northman… but not.

For utility, I use my multi tool. In my 'Go Bag" I have and old Vietnam era pilots survival knife. Then my old trusty Buck folder I keep in my pocket. If I had a dollar for every knife I've lost...

If you cant carry a gun, for protection/slf defense is a folder knife serviceable or would you rather a fixed blade?

Saw a video a couple ago where the poster (who is a former servicemember, now knife maker) said that folding knives are a really bad idea for self-defense. He said he's literally seen the knife fold and cut the owner's fingers while they were trying to defend themselves. Folding for utility, fixed for self-defense.
