Lock picks may be a controversial EDC item, but in my opinion it is an important part on my gear. And lock picking is a great skill to have in both survival situations and every day situations. Let me know what you think about them.

to be true a very small percentage of break-ins involving locks actually use lock picks and when they do they never use single pin picking. they usually use jigglers or rakes. whatever method is easiest.

I bought the see through lock and picking tools combo. The beginner’s kit. Racks, picks, tensioners, I worked on that same padlock for four days. Never opened it. (Keys worked though). Kit had two other see through (door?) locks. I was able to open those. Returned the set. Still can not figure what was the problem. Was the cylinder binding? The pins never did the lock above the shear zone, just fell back. Did they send me an un-pickable lock ? Accidentally designed an Uber-lock?

Interesting problem to have. Without seeing the lock and couldn't say what might have been wrong with it. If the pins were not fixing in place, maybe you weren't getting enough tension?

The shank is called a bypass tool. It bypasses the lock and manipulates the locking bar. It will not work on many locks because they have protection against bypass tools.

You hit the talking points, lockpicking is a life skill. You never know when you may need it. I like that Southord pick pen. It would be nice if the tip actually contained a pen that worked, just to give it more magic. Everyone is making these EDC pick knifes. I would never want to single pin pick a lock with such an uncomfortable mass in my hand. The pen is an old school idea.

Covert Instruments have a nice set called the Covert Companion which basically is a keysmart with a bunch of bypass tools and picks with possible expansions for like tension wrenches, dimple rakes etc. It’d be nice to see your take on a custom version of the companion

The selection of bypass tools in the covert companion is nice but using the actual picks on the covert companion is not nice. If you care more about the actual picks get a SWICK. I have the little bogota pair from covert instruments they fit in my wallet and damn near open everything I stick them into.

I got a covert companion with the riv pick and tensioner add ons and they work surprisingly well. I agree that the regular picks on it are cumbersome, but the removable tensioner and picks are actually really handy. I took mine to my local bike coop and was able to pick/rake/bypass 8 locks in about half an hour. That said, it is a very expensive set up for what it is and likely isn't for everyone.

I would still want to carry a tensioner with those two lockpicks. Sometimes it can be handy to rake a lock and then single pin pick the pins that don't get set by the rake and you cant do that if your other lockpick is being used as the tensioner.

Know your local laws before you carry. Even in places where picks are legal to own, they may be illegal to carry. Some laws are written as such that to carry picks (and related tools) is proof that you had intent to B&E, even if you really had no intent. This is only likely to come up if you get stopped for drunk driving, running a red light, arrested for a bar fight, or entering a government building and forgetting you had the picks in your wallet. Basically obey the laws, and also don't do stupid things that will make LEOs take an interest in you.

99% of all burglaries are brute force attacks. They have no clue how to pick locks which is why lock pick sets are usually legal unless you're caught doing something illegal like breaking & entering while in possession of one. That said, bump keys are usually illegal in most places. Don't carry bump keys if you not sure about your state laws. ...and yes, you should carry a lock pick set in your EDC but I suggest you really learn how to use it. Attacking a clear practice lock is really not learning. It's too basic. It can teach you some fundamentals but that's it. You need real World lock experience or it's really worthless to carry.
