This one is a little different but something I really enjoyed working on. It's a little less myth and a little more narrative - I hope you all enjoy it. Feedback is appreciated as always, I'll produce a few more videos in this vein at some point if it seems popular. In case the intro misses the mark for some people it's a satire of that from a show that started in the late 50s called "The Twilight Zone".
This video extensively contains my own commentary and editing and is intended for educational purposes.

Edda is a creature of aether now. The devs will bring her back based on our interest/focus on her. Or, to put it another way, our interest in Edda will summon her back into the game. Edda is a meta-primal.

@kushrada Bit of a necromantic reply, but isn't the lvl 51 dungeon talk about people going cannibal then becoming monsters?

I personally always thought that Edda wasn't as bad a healer as her companions let on. she was meek and likely not as charming as the tank guy, so when the tank over pulled rather then blaming the tank for his own mistake the group instead blames their healer, it's not like this doesn't happen in game especially with new players XP. I also wonder if the unrequited love only really started after the tank guy died, as a result of eddas guilt and feelings of responsibility, the guy sounds like he'd be a lot easier to project feelings on to once he's dead and can't talk.

If Edda's knowledge of necromancy came from an outside source, I would instead speculate that she got her knowledge second-hand from the Lambs of Dalamund. The cult's knowledge and fanatic belief in the ways of forbidden magicks and blood rituals with the Void all fit what Edda has done to a T. Since the Deepcroft was being used by the Lambs, it'd be safe to speculate that they left notes and research material behind from being so rudely intruded on by Adventurers. Considering all of the spare enchanted body parts strewn about during the wedding, it's clear Edda's spent sufficient time in self study and experimentation to get where she is now.

Absolutely solid video that had a healthy balance of IRL mythology and in game lore + speculation. Can't agree more on the hope that we'll eventually see the return of Edda... And hopefully Diabolos as well. In all honesty, the Amdapori storyline is one I hope the devs will continue to explore and maybe... Just MAYBE we'll find something in a certain portion of The Black Shroud we still haven't been able to revisit just yet but likely will in 3.0. I also like to think that we shall see a return to The Lost City in a similar fashion to AK, turning the ruinous and still existence into that haunted and unsettling presence we saw in the recent patch's hard mode addition.

Thank you, even if it was speculation for the most part it brought about what I had tried to recall from the first time seeing them. I do hope they do more with her and him. I am a sucker for tragic romances.

There is speculation that she will return in the Palace of the Dead. In the trailer, at the end of PotD presentation, you see the bottom half of a girl which the camera hides the rest of her, while the music that plays is slightly the same as Tamtara HM's boss theme. (Not the voidsent boss theme to avoid confusion)

It's definitely Edda, there's a minion sized Avere (or basically just his normal head size) resting on her shoulder

It's probably been brought up, but new lore surrounding Edda and Avere point to them being engaged. It's revealed Avere lost his engagement ring after you complete the palace of the dead and are tasked with finding it to properly put him and Edda to rest.

I feel like we need to know why Edda is doing this, what drove her to keep his head and want to reanimate it and marry it. I feel there is a bigger power here, Diablos theory is pretty interesting. I'm just wondering if he actually loved her at all or if she's one of them crazy clingy girls who can't let a guy go. (There out there trust me lol) Great work man!

Well you can actually connect her to diabolos easly, she uses the pilgrim chestpiece, damaged, worn out, dirt, as a simbol of how something white and pure has decayed, althou it shows that she has grown stronger. The gear is called Pilgrim, and she traveled across eorzea, but most important, the pilgrim chestpiece only drops from diabolos himself in lost city of amdapor, so technicly, that can be a link.

There's actually a story in Japanese mythology very similar to the one about Orpheus and Eurydice (or a combination of that and the Rape of Persephone) that they'd have been more familiar with, I imagine: The gods Izanami-no-Mikoto and Izanagi-no-Mikoto created many gods (and the islands that make up Japan) but eventually Izanami died in childbirth. Iaznagi travelled to the underworld (Yomi) to try and negotiate for Izamani's release but she couldn't leave because she'd already eaten food from the underworld. She was going to go and see if she could be let out anyway she just asked Izanagi not to look at her. Well she might as well have asked him not to think of a pink elephant because the first thing he did was light up a torch to look at her. He saw that her face had been rotted away and was so terrified that he fled, covering the entrance to Yomi with a boulder. Izanami yelled that if he left she would kill 1.000 of his people every day - he replied that he'd create 1,500 every day. And that's how Izanami became the queen of hell and.. I guess that's how death came to the world? Except for death by murder and childbirth because apparently that already existed?
@EthysAsher
@EthysAsher 9 жыл бұрын
I think that it's very likely that Edda is being informed at least aesthetically by Izanami, but I would not assume that our devs are any less familiar with western myth than they are with Japanese - the FF franchise makes more allusions to Hellenic, Germanic and Celtic myth than any other in digital medium I can think of that isn't directly based on a particular myth.

I still like and think the Diablos theory could fit, of course they have now disproved that Edda and Avere's relationship was completely one sided. which I kinda like but does make less sense...

+Sepp Grayve You think so? I really thought I was being quite sympathetic to her, but I guess it's just really complicated.
@GrayveStone
@GrayveStone 9 жыл бұрын
well, before your video I always thought of her as the 'abused and wounded' healer, mistreated and cheated on my her friends and lover. But, the spin that Avre was -never- cheating on her, that it was all in her head, and she was a 'stalker' all along rather changes that. And casts the Archer (avelline?) in a more sympathetic light. It's a shift from tragic and broken girl that could have been saved with a little kindness, to.... an already weak and damaged mind that created it's on illusion of reality all along... which is much harder to help and heal, if I am being clear. But then, I like hope and redemption tales more then tragic doomed lovers, so take what i say with a grain of salt.

Imagine this from Avere's prospective seeing Edda as nothing more that a detriment and once he died,he must have felt him self becoming more and more twisted each time brought back over and over agin. Chained to Edda's obsession with him and blinding all consuming desire to live out the fantasies detailed in the journals that we find in the Deep croft.

Well, since this si three year old content and all... My face when there's a post POTD quest where it turns out they were IN LOVE. THAT was the shocker. Turns out, Edda wasn't the thirsty bitch, it was the Liavanne(?), their archer. ...Granted, Edda's still crazy, but definitely more well meaning and tragic.

Great video about a fantastic story. I really liked your take on it. However, I noticed you might have glossed over the fact that Edda was almost certainly in Ul'dah when the quest was given to you, as evidenced by her hat behind the chocobo stables sign. Does that have any bearing on the story? I mean, after all, she was hoping to have the player character's body, and soul right? Does this make her at all malevolent and not just a woman who descended into madness?
