I honestly didn't even realize that this was a newer version of the SL20, which is why I was I kept ignoring it. Oddly, i hated the previous version of the SL20 and love this version. On top of that, I bought it for 44.00 USD, so well worth the price for me..

I’m under the impression that the OG SL20 was a bit divisive: a really low profile/close to the ground/ultra light shoe. A lot of runners felt like it was too technical/fast shoe for them. Adidas, trying to aim to larger masses, is rather destroying the identity of a really great first iteration

I was going to comment the exact same thing. The marketing on the OG model was all about a shoe for the masses, but the shoe didn’t fit that demographic. Seems they’ve tried to go back to that with increased stack and loose upper.

@ Victor Abel there are two clips adidas Running released with the OG. They claim it’s the perfect training partner for the aPro, but I didn’t agree as it runs like the adios/Boston (fast mid-to-long distance shoes). The OG even has the torsion system of the adios and the outsole is similar. It’s also worth noting it released with the RC and Takumi Sen (race flats). They didn’t capture the “democratic” vibe they desired. I think they really went for it this time. It’s an aPro (a long distance shoe) sans all the bells and whistles. Same last, same midsole mold, similar fit, similar weight, similar outsole philosophy and no torsion system. No Boost. No plate. It released with the aPro. I hoped for a slightly tweaked filler shoe, but this is completely reimagined (and realized?). ✌🏽🖤🏃🏽‍♂️

@@sneakerprofiler yes! Here at Argentina it was available for purchase right next with the takumi sen. It’s a really interesting “retail project”. It was planned as one profile, the first iteration contradicts marketing but finds a considerable fan base. And then comes Adidas, trying to correct that OG version, and, at the same time, alienating all its promoters!

@ Danny J you are correct on the redundancy comment. The SL was meant for another purpose, but it runs A LOT like a firmer Boston. adizero is stacked with fantastic race flats. But they seem to be adding in this mid-to-high space. I wonder if the Boston will become more like the OG SL20 and eventually abandon BOOST. ✌🏽🖤🏃🏽‍♂️

Hi Edd - great review. The follow up album is always a tough gig. So often the near perfection is diluted with the next iteration. Surely any shoe manufacturer starts by not changing what makes the predecessor great. I see this mistake repeated frequently. An iteration is the opportunity to change something good into something great - I don’t see that in this version. BEAST - she’s a legend! I’d like to see you both do a what’s next from the shoe manufacturers for 2021 especially those subtle tweaks expected on next years plated shoes - or will they last another year???????

I am thinking the excess material in midsole that was “carved “ out of the original maybe due to the removal of the torsion system. Carve it out and it may twist too much. Over reliance on the Lightstrike stiffnes perhaps? Kinda worried about what changes would come for the Boston 10. Change for the sake of change?...I hope not.

I've got a hypothesis after seeing the Boston 10. Perhaps the RC for speed work, SL20 for daily trainer, Boston 10 for long run and of course the adios pro as the racer.

Quick Update: Just did my 1st 6mi. run in my SL20's. Wonderful shoe!!! Smooth fluid ride. I have come to realize there is just no reason to pay over $100 for a great daily trainer.

I ordered the sl 20 as well as the sl 20.2 both in the summer rdy versions and the sl 20.2 is 8gr heavier. Might be of interest for potential buyers (: the sl 20.2 feels more cushioned but the upper is more rigid

I don’t think it was time for an update, but I do feel like it’s okay they’re making it more like a daily trainer. Adidas already has a lot of lower stack lightweight shoes. Probably time for a new low stack lightstrike with a little boost speed show to replace it though.

I believe the midsole is much wider to add stability that was previously provided by the torsion plate. A simple way to provide a similar effect?

The midsole changes may by a sign that adidas was trying to make it more of a trainer to compliment their premium racy offerings, rather than compete with them. Heck, I cross-shopped the Boston with the SL20 because they were so similar! The upper looks like it was designed by a committee whose only knowledge of running shoes was from magazine clippings of obsolete Nike models.

I’m a big fan of the Boston 8, put hundreds of miles on them….but that shoe is dead so I switched to the Adios 5…which I love….I bought a pair of SL20s for like $60 due to the rave reviews…but I never liked them…upper way too tight, mid-sole strike feels sloppy….turns out they are the SL20.2 and I see why I don’t like them based on this review…I’d probably like the OG SL20, but at this point I’ve had my fill of SL20!!! I’d also like to point out that I’d be afraid of running them on trails due to the stack height…to high IMO for rugged trail running, need something lower to the ground…even through the traction would be very good for sure

The sl20 original is slightly lower and much more nimble than the v2. Though go carful on sizing in adidas as they vary greatly.

I'm confused my second pair of the sl20 arrived yesterday. My first pair was the kids version summer ready . The second pair is the women's and it's seems to have much more cushion and the shoe seems more bulky. My sl20 v2 has been lost in the mail.

It seems to me: OG SL20 = NB Rebel SL20.2 = NB Beacon If it feels more of a Beacon than a Rebel, it's a must buy for me. Although, rumors of Boston 10 having Lightstrike Pro might change my mind (to be released next yr). I'd rather skip the SL20 altogether and just get the Boston 9 instead.

Gutted, solebrother. But you also initially disliked the adiosPro. The update was unnecessary unless it’s a sign the lo-stack adios will be outmoded. Doubtful. The .2 isn’t really a sequel as all SL iterations are Olympic year shoes. The sequel should be SL24. We agree on the apparent goal. I may return mine if I play with fit and can’t make it work. My main concern is the lack of a gusseted tongue. ✌🏽🖤🏃🏽‍♂️

I’m reading comments, and I think many are missing the point of the SL20. adidas always claimed it was an aPro training companion. But it ran like an adios5. So it was actually a failure that was just REALLY good. I’m holding judgement ‘til your long run impressions. Fordy Runs prefers the SL20.2 to the aPro but says it’s not as good a shoe as the SL20. It’s a success if that is the case. ‘Still an unnecessary but 🔥looking release. ✌🏽🖤✊🏽

Honestly Edd, I’m heartbroken. Stockup time, oh the girlfriend is going to love this. Boxes of shoes already paid for using up space... There was no need to change anything, except for maybe a more padded tongue. Why adidas, why!? Why do all these companies believe they need to change the shoes every year. Casual runners don‘t know all the models anyway, and serious runners actually despise most changes. Just make a new model if you believe you have something new that you want to present to runners. /rant Kind of makes me appreciate asics and their "staleness". They didn‘t mess with the Cumulus or Nimbus and just made the -blast series...

All they had to do was make the sole a few mm thicker. Upper was great. Maybe change the heel but Adidas what is this?! Maybe the upstart SL20 is getting punished for acting above its station.

@@EDDBUD every review, and majority of comments, claimed adidas was confusing runners with so many lo-stack running shoes (RC, SL, TS, adios, Boston). Many complained there is not enough midsole in the OG. My guess is they wanted to use the new adizero last plus tweak the midsole in order to address complaints. No need for the torsion wishbone with more LS. That led to changing the outsole from the adios-styled version. I guess the positives are this proves adidas listens to their userbase and LS is a game changer. ✌🏽🖤🏃🏽‍♂️

Thirdly I will say I disagreed about the runners knot problem. I found they had plenty of length and lockdown felt snug. However clearly the heel slip caused a problem considering the state of my heel. But hey .. the foam is nice

Not sure what size you are but my 11.5 were tough to achieve a double knot with the supplied laces. Maybe smaller sizes are not an issue but I reckon they just threw the same length laces in all of them.

Second/third run in SL20 broke my PB on 5 and 10k...nice! I did try it on on longer run (ouch) not enough cushioning. Expected the V2 would just just more for less to help on the longer runs. Doesn’t look as good as V1, is it like the Boston 9....why! I’ll buy another pair of the original version and pass the V2. Boooo!

@@EDDBUD according to your analysis, it’s so different it wouldn’t fit my needs in any way but the price. Adidas luckily makes other excellent (which incidentally already have) shoes to date.

Ah man they look abit downgrade and abit clunky from the previous ones or is that just me. I love the sl 20 got two pairs. Used on long and short runs there a good all rounder. I still prefer a bit of a boost and lightstrike combo so my Bostons are always my go to shoe.

@@EDDBUD adidas trying to differentiate the shoe from the Adios & Boston possibly. Next shoe up is the Solar range which are far too heavy as a daily trainer (in my opinion).
